editorial

"Heya Girls!"
Christmas is fast approaching and it feels like the whole of Vienna is full of Christmas markets. Even your favourite newsletter is full of Xmas pop-ups and gift shopping. It's almost getting too much for me, so I'm really grateful that at least the Volkstheater is bowing out of the whole Jingle Bells fuss next weekend! They're staying cool and bring a festival for adventurous music and thoughts with “Desertshore”. For two days, all (!) stages of the Volkstheater will be filled with concerts, performances, installations, talks and DJ sets. The headliners are the Australian Kat Frankie with her acclaimed a cappella show Bodies (photo) and the Israeli-Iranian singer Liraz. Also taking part are multimedia artist L Twills – who has already been compared to Laurie Anderson and Björk – and Albertine Sarges, a true chameleon of pop culture. As you can see: no mainstream, but little-known gems to be discovered! And guaranteed to be a Santa-free zone ;-)

Wishing you an original week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

With the Citybus to the Wind Turbine
What do the BIC lighter, the Steyr Citybus and the Puch Maxi have in common? They were all designed by Louis Lucien Lepoix. Hardly anyone knows the name, but the 3,000 or so products that Lepoix created as one of the most productive industrial designers of the post-war period (and also the grandfather of a CitySpotterGirl :-)) are very well known! From the Kienzle parking clock to the small helicopter, the designforum now shows products, models and, above all, visions of the universalist. As early as 1941, he already worked on the hot topic of alternative energy generation. Today is the vernissage!

YYB Fashion & Paralumi Vienna
With all the abundance of fashion, it's always nice when small labels stand out. Yara-Yvon Bertassi's brand YYB is one such label. The designer specialises in sophisticated, colourful designs such as tops whose cut can be altered with wrapped ribbons. And she uses her mother Patrizia Bertassi's digitised artwork to print cool blouses. All of these items, as well as Patrizia's embroidered artwork and flashy, pleated lampshades from Yara-Yvon's second label Paralumi Vienna, are up for grabs today and Saturday in the cosy ambience of the feinklein delicatessen bistro. Also a nice idea for gifts, by the way!

 Naked Kitchen
Naked Dinner Feat. Wow! Art
Moulin Rouge wickedness meets Broadway theatrics – this is roughly how you could describe Naked Kitchen founder Nicolai Reimond's latest coup. Inspired by the legendary 1970s “dîner des têtes surrealists” in Paris, the restaurateur and artist Coco Wasabi have created an ecstatic dining experience in which art and cuisine merge. Today, the starting shot is fired in a still secret location that has been completely styled by Coco. Celebrity chef Gregor Vracko cooks up a surprise 4-course menu, while show acts provide a visual firework display. Sensational!

Location will be announced upon registration. 8 December from 19:00. Dinner & After-Party 195 €. Web

 Madame Kukla
Madame Kukla
In case anyone hasn't heard of it yet, Madame Kukla is the one with the nifty wrap-around things. Or better explained: a one-size-fits-all garment that you can wrap, tie and style in endless different ways with the help of clips. Unfortunately, founder Stefanie is now closing her doors online and offline for the time being, which is why today is the last chance for wrapping happiness at the pop-up with flawless, returned goods. From wrap dresses to basic dresses, jumpers and shirts to clips, there are plenty of styles waiting to be picked up by their future wearers. It pays to be quick!

Hidden little Christmas Market
Oh, how nice! We always love hidden Advent spots away from the Christmas crowds. If they also take place in the Hidden Kitchen, it’s bound to be great! Today, the place to be for lunchtime highs is hosting a fine Xmas market with a floral Advent decoration workshop, singing by big little citizens and a book and clothes corner. A photographer will also be taking free family portraits for homemade Xmas postcards and because drinking enough is also important in winter, a delicious pomegranate mulled wine awaits dry throats ;-)

Angel Advent
One design advent market follows the next at the moment, kind of makes you lose track. But you can still find insider tips – like Ruth Wegerer's angel workshop. The journalist uses fabric and iron wire to create poetic creatures that are a must-see. Once a year, she sells the angels, which are already legendary among connoisseurs, at her private angel market. Plus: free buffet and beautiful things from 9 other designers! And attention: your CitySpotterGirl will also be there with her beautiful books – so come in large numbers, we look forward to seeing you!

 Voices of Japan & Vienna
Voices from Japan & Vienna
Instead of fusion cuisine, today we get fusion musique! In the magnificent Golden Hall of the Musikverein, the mystical beauty of Buddhist hymns from Japan meets the timeless elegance of Viennese classical music. The meditative chants of Buddhist monks merge with the passionate sounds of violin, cello and piano. Works by Schubert and Kreisler enter into a liaison with Far Eastern choral songs under the pen of Johannes Berauer and the new work “Unity” by Yury Revich. A tribute to the universal language of music!

MQ Enzi-Voting
It's almost as exciting as the announcement of the Pantone colour of the year: the biennial voting for the colour scheme of the famous MQ outdoor seating furniture “Enzi”. This year's nominees are “Evergreen Tanja”, “Blue Blossoms of Enzi-an” and “Silver Gerlinde” – all inspired by the tree and plant species that have been greening the MQ since the summer. Regardless of the decision, the casual lounge furniture will be greener, as the new models will be made from 70% recycled beverage cartons. Important: Voting is only possible today anymore!

The Habsburgs – A Vampire Tale
The Schubert Theatre's trilogy about the Habsburgs is not really suitable for history lessons, but it's fun: 1755, the vampire plague holds Maria Theresa's empire in its grip. The imperial physician Gerard van Swieten is tasked with handling the superstition. When he unexpectedly comes up against a real vampire, his enlightened view of the world is shaken. And how does the empress react to the thirsty guest? Maria Theresa, too, who feels she has been called by God to rule, has to face the question of how enlightened she really is. Part one is on today!

Hard/Soft
Ceramics and textiles. Two materials could hardly be more contrasting – you would think! Because they also have a lot in common: they share a haptic design language that alternates between hard, unwieldy, soft and flowing. We associate textiles that are sculpturally dense with warmth and flexibility. They contrast with the cool fragility of ceramics moulded from soft clay or loam. The new exhibition at the MAK shows different works that combine both materials and artfully present their paradoxical togetherness. Today is the vernissage!

Gruam cabaret reconstruction
It used to be so nice! Until there was a fire at the Gruam last year and Vienna's smallest cabaret venue had to close its curtain. As small as the stage may have been, it was still a steppingstone for many a big name. And that’s why the Gruam is now to experience a renaissance. Some well-known names from the cabaret and music scene have come together for a charity concert, with all proceeds used for the reconstruction. Gunkl, Pepi Hopf, the Moped brothers and Peter Klien make us dance and laugh today – a great thing!

Doris Uhlich: Sonne
It illuminates everything and everyone and makes existences possible just as much as it can destroy them: our sun. Performer Dors Uhlich has dedicated the second part of her Melancholy Trilogy to this ambivalent celestial body. In this special show, the sun is given a voice with physical, artistic and cultural-historical connections. As is always the case in the Austrian choreographer's pieces, the performers are quite extraordinary – like her fellow actress Romy Nagl, who is just 10 years young. Today is the premiere!

Female Post-War Architecture
Pure destruction – but after the Second World War, it also meant plenty of space for new buildings in architectural terms. And in Vienna, these quite often came from female hands. Today's art VHS lecture focuses on the generation of female architects who made a career in post-war modernism. A wide range of works will be examined, from residential and religious buildings, interior design and urban planning to power station construction by architectural greats such as Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, Maria Tölzer and Elise Sundt. It's exciting to see what parts of our favourite city were designed by ladies!

Pizza and wine – that's what it's all about here. Thus, the wine list is huge (and includes some unusual wines), and the dough wheels are given the same amount of attention. The sourdough is allowed to rest for 72 hours before being placed in the stone oven at 905 degrees Fahrenheit (aha, the name!). That's almost 500 degrees centigrade. In contrast to many new pizza places, the pizzas here are topped in an almost classic way, with Tuscan fennel salami or veggies from the Demeter farm Meinklang. The interior is really cool: antique wooden floors, patterned tiles and industrial style. A good mix!
