"Heya Girls!"
Our heart is pounding already! Today marks the start of the 40th ImPulsTanz Festival, which will set the whole of Vienna vibrating with 68 international productions! The opening spectacle at the MQ is free and features none other than Doris Uhlich and her sensational success “more than naked”! If that's a bit too short notice for you, no worries, the energetic dance fireworks will continue to sparkle for another month: on 10 July, Angela Schubot from Germany will make the moss dance (“Mossbelly”). On 14 July, Canadian star choreographer Marie Chouinard rotates to ecstasy amidst electronic sound clouds and brightly coloured wigs (“M”). For those who prefer a more contemplative experience, Christian Rizzo and his company will take you to the sea in “Miramar” on 21 July and merge with the sky and the ocean. Of course, the cool workshops and lectures are an absolute must, where you can become a dancing star yourself: from Afro-Haitian dance to cosmic eroticism to chimera twerking, they got it all! Move your body, sisters!

Wishing you a wild week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Yasmo & die Klangkantine
Word has probably already spread that there is muuuch to discover and experience for free at this year's KulturSommer in muuuch of Vienna. Until 13 August, you are spoilt for choice every day as to where to go. A reading, a workshop, a dance performance, the theatre? Today, without a doubt, the Yasmo concert is the place to be! She raps and hip-hops her way into the hearts of the audience in her usual casual manner on the pop-up stage near the Wasserturm in Favoriten. With her: the new album “Laut & Lost”. All that remains is for you to decide whether to smile, dance or shout along.

Vegetable Instrument Making
Fancy some carrot blowing and cucumber drumming? Yeah, you heard that right! The legendary Viennese vegetable orchestra lets you take a peek today and offers practical insights into vegetable instrument making. In the professional workshop, you can easily carve a violin out of leek and parsley or turn a crunchy aubergine into castanets :-) The particularly skilled can even try their hand at making a challenging cucumberophone! Afterwards, the sound bodies will be made to vibrate together. You can check out a short sound teaser here. Bring a chopping board and kitchen knife (without grooves!).

Sisters Festival
A miracle has happened! In the Arena Wien today there are exclusively female performers on (and behind) the stage. The Sisters Festival takes female empowerment pleasantly seriously! Also joining: the performance artists Bianca and Sierra Casady alias CocoRosie, who fuse hip-hop with folk and opera elements to create atmospheric pop songs. Amy Montgomery from Belfast heats things up with alternative rock, the Viennese indie trio Dives with surfy garage pop. And singer and beatboxer Aygyul gets dance fans in the right mood with hot dance and future pop flows.

 Kaleidoskop
Caleidoscope at Karlsplatz
Simply translated, kaleidoscope means “to see beautiful shapes”. And indeed, when you look at the programme of the open-air film festival of the same name, you see only beauty! 15 subtly curated films, for example, that take cineastes on 15 summer evenings to 15 cities and their realities. Or great live acts like dance battles, concerts and readings in the supporting programme! Today, the French film “Un Petit Frere” (Mother and Son) provides strong emotions: Single mother Rose fights her way from Abidjan to (and through) Paris with her two sons. Free admission. Really artsy!

 Belvedere Wien
Colossal
More is more! That's what New York style icon Iris Apfel has been saying for ages, in any case. And lately the Lower Belvedere in Vienna seems to agree. Because the new exhibition Colossal exclusively showcases paintings in large format! The XXXXL art, up to 10 metres long, comes from Tina Blau, among others, who lets “The Prater in Spring” overflow. Or from Elisabeth Plank, whose “Framed Gloriosa” defies all imagination. Of course, there are also men wondering who has got the biggest ;-) For example, history painter Hans Makart or blood boy Hermann Nitsch. Spectacular!

 Kurt Palm
Gunman in Limbo
The classic water glass reading has gotten a bit old by now ;-) That's probably what bestselling author Kurt Palm thought, too, when he invited two refreshing colleagues to his novel presentation. Because once you have “The Shark in the System”, (the book's title), SOKO Donau-cop Gregor Seberg might mutate into an entertaining amok runner. And cellist Sophie Abraham searches for suitable redemptive tones parallel to the content. Anyhow, the evening with the self-proclaimed trio infernale won’t be dull. Especially since the new thriller is about toxic masculinity and love dilemmas.

Summer Rhapsody
Admittedly, the ambience in the historic park of the Gartenpalais Liechtenstein is tremendous in itself. But at today's festival opening, three real vocal giants in particular will give you goose bumps: Monika Ballwein, Maya Hakvoort and Missy May! Accompanied by the WW Allstars Big Band, the style icons will perform legendary songs from 24 James Bond films. Among them are the world hits Goldfinger, Skyfall and Diamonds are forever. A great opportunity to throw on a glittery glamour dress. After all, you might meet your very own 007. Full festival programme here.

Island in the sun..., is at least what CitySpotterGirl is warbling in anticipation. But no matter where the journey takes you, what you always need is a sturdy piece of luggage! For example, from the bag manufacturer Freitag, which now lends out two of its backpack models to holiday-hungry globetrotters. Simply register online, pick up the bag of your choice at the Freitag shop in Neubaugasse and return it after 3 weeks. Then all you have to do is post an Insta-worthy snapshot from the road. But posing shouldn't be a problem. Only 1 piece per person. Until 23 August!

Art installation “Inhabitable”
Rarely has the refugee issue got under your skin like this! Students of the Human Rights Department at the University of Applied Arts have built a multimedia refugee tent. And set it up at the Alsergrund as part of the Kultursommer. The idea behind it: Refugees are often left with only their own clothes. Sounds emotional, and it is – but in a good sense! The supporting programme is also horizon-broadening: you can take part in an original Ethiopian coffee ceremony or chat one-on-one with experts about fleeing, LGBTIQ+ and asylum at the “Living Books”.

Yoga class at Viva Frida Kahlo
No question, Frida Kahlo's masterpieces always invite you to inspiring flights of fancy. But today, the flood of images by the Mexican female power artist and icon literally grabs you with all your senses! In the midst of the multi-media exhibition “Viva Frida Kahlo” in Vienna's Marx Halle, an exclusive yoga class takes place. It's quite possible that one or the other cat, cow, cobra or warrioress will sneak into the colour installations. We are talking about asanas, of course ;-) All levels welcome. A visit to the exhibition from 18:00 is included! A real happy place!

“Summertime” – Art from all over the world
Now you can never be quite sure where in the world the FortunaGalerie team is roaming around at any given moment. But that doesn't matter! As long as Claudia Pöchlauer and Walter Größbauer bring back all kinds of beautiful and special things from their travels. This time they have extravagant textiles from Mali and South Africa in their luggage. Also: handmade basket and fabric bags from Tanzania, funny ear jewellery by Carolina Creatures from Portugal. And – as a special highlight – narrative sculptures and coloured drawings by the art brut artist Thembinkosi Kohli from Cape Town!

 Maria Austria Institut Amsterdam
Focus! Click! Maria Austria
First of all, thanks to the Jewish Museum team for bringing the long-forgotten exile photographer Marie Austria into focus! In the 1940s and 50s, she was not only highly talented artistically, but also courageous! Emigrated to Amsterdam in 1937, she got involved in the resistance after the Nazi invasion. She took photos for counterfeit passports. And after the end of the war, she founded the Particam photo agency. If you look at her pictures you are transported straight back to the (post-)war period. Touching portraits and exceptional photos, for example of Anne Frank's hiding place. Austrian premiere!

neuvermöbelt
Attention, addiction alert! A visit to Manuela and Christian means: your heart starts racing and you want it all! Using special materials like linoleum, the former stage designer and architect create extravagant furniture fronts for kitchens and cupboards from Ikea. The colour scheme is somewhere between candy floss dream and gold rush, but elegant black with copper details are also posing in the Floridsdorf showroom, which looks so inviting in a lofty brick house that you would just like to move in there. But it's best to check it out for yourself, because on 7 and 8 July there are Open Days

 Figlmüller Group
Zwischengang
It's usually mostly tourists who frequent Stephansplatz. But now us Viennese should also drop by, because the Figlmüllers have taken over the former Cafe Weinwurm (at least until Christmas) – and have ingeniously re-designed the old walls covered with white mosaics! You can go to Zwischengang for a coffee or a meal, but the portions are more for the small appetite. That's quite practical with the heat at the moment, otherwise you just order two courses. The Wiener Schnitzel tastes great (duh!) and the Fiaker Krapfen with apple strudel ice cream could be this summer's favourite :-)
