"Heya Girls!"
Now, you former girl scouts, brainiacs, and “Famous Five”-fans out there! Starting right now, women have a great reason to rekindle their childlike delight in solving puzzles, pursuing adventures, and doing some amateur sleuthing. In a grown-up way, obviously ;-) A new “Escape Room” just opened in Himmelpfortgasse – yes exactly, one of these hip leisure establishments with different quest rooms, where reality and the everyday world stay outside for a bit and you can throw yourself into an interactive fantasy adventure. This calls for brains, intuition and team work, equally. Specifically, you can dive into the mystical saga of a medieval castle here, follow the leads in a 60s hotel room, or chase Empress Sisi and her Franz through the Vienna State Opera. All of the three quests leave you only 60 minutes! And one thing upfront: Successfully handling all tasks, high-tech obstacles and surprises could become a close call. So bring five friends ;-)

Wishing you an adventurous week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

First Escape, Himmelpfortgasse 17, 1010 Vienna. Daily 10:00 to 20:30. Booking! From 19 €/ person. Web

Opening rienna temporary design store
As you know, the Griensteidl is no more – it was replaced (at least for the coming months) by the scene-hotspot rien. Which is so good that it’s not even possible to say nasty things about it, despite Griensteidl nostalgia. And from today, it gets even better! Because it marks the start of the pop up store rienna. And if the design pieces are as ingenious as the pastries and gourmet products, then you can go ahead and jump with joy. There’s fashion from Ferrari Zöchling, and Meshit, accessories from Eva Blut, interior objects, jewellery, and cosmetics from Viennese designers. The best!

Winter opening at MQ
Sooner or later, the winter-party at MQ is inevitable, anyway. So why not join in now on opening day? It’s kicked-off by the big free concert of the Amadeus-winning Austro-band “SK Invitational” that provides some cool jump-and dance mood in the main court with their hip hop beats, melodious rap and guests. Of course, it’ll snow the first punch of the season and a couple of surprises: the igloos alias “MQbis” are new, just like the light installations, and for the playful (or for those in need of sobering up ;-) there’s an auto-race-parkour for the first time. This will definitely be a joyride and a lot of fun!

Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky
Austria’s first female architect, the wonderful residential housing-revolutionist Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, is mainly known for her Frankfurt kitchen. Now a new exhibition is dedicated to her work in Vienna. The visionary had always been interested in housing and living situations and worked at the architectural office of the Austrian Association for Settlement and Small Gardens and as a freelance architect. The exhibition shows her housing projects for the settlement movement in the 1920s all the way to her participation in the jury of the Frauen-Werk-Stadt in 1994.

Martin’s goose à l’Orient
This is certainly going to be a whole new experience! Under the direction of experienced restaurateurs, refugees and Viennese are running a restaurant together called Habibi & Hawara. And they currently have a very tempting, pretty untraditional, oriental-Austrian goose menu (6 courses) on offer, and that for heart-warming 49 €! For starters, there’s goose liver, pumpkin-Tahini-soup, and pomegranate sherbet, until, with a drum roll, the organic goose from Bucklige Welt is being brought out. Which comes along in a slightly exotic way, with star anise- and quince cabbage, hearty bread- and potato dumplings. Yummy!

Opening Cha·rak·ter
Instead of ready-made S-M-L fashion, a woman should now make a mental note of her own measurements! Vienna has gained one more design- and custom tailoring, where you can order high-quality couture and tailor-made clothes for everyday. Namely from Upper Austrian Christina Schatzeder, who’s now wrapping up the Viennese ladies in her refined cuts, after stays in Paris and Ivory Coast. The atelier also functions as her shop: you can buy her own evening gowns and the Afro Stolen collection as well as selected jewellery, lingerie and concept store pieces from colleagues! There's something for everyone!

Hm, what’s that again with Senegal? Western African country, capital is Dakar, cool Atlantic in the west, hot Sahel zone in the east. And this is where CitySpotterGirl is at her wit’s end. Never mind, today Africa fans have the chance to better get to know the southern Sahel region Casamance. From 17:00, culture hotspot Afripoint hosts a Senegalese evening with dancing, live music, and culinary offers. There’s drumming- and dance workshops, a concert, and at the dinner at 20:00, they will certainly serve one or two national dishes like Thieboudinne or Maafe.

Give-away party
Now this really warms your heart :-) Today, the club “Miteinand” has organised one of their altruistic-ingenious give-away parties again. It’s just about giving gift, without ulterior motives or expecting something in return. If you’d like to support this nice thought, just pack some useable-as-gift stuff that you don’t need yourself anymore but may give joy to others into your backpack. This might be a ring or a bed (only advertise big stuff via photo) – the important thing is only that the things are in good condition. Cake is welcome too!

Knitting metal
Exciting stuff for hobby goldsmith ladies and jewellery fans! As part of the new “Viennese Goldsmith Course”, Birthe Getzner will demonstrate in a workshop how to knit with precious metals. It starts with copper, then it’s on to 925 sterling silver, and experienced “golden Marys” can even try their luck with 18 carat gold. At first, you have a patch, then you also knit in a circle and afterwards transform the golden net structure into jewellery pieces. By the way, instead of needles, diligent gold smiths use an “idler” – newbies will learn what that is in the work shop ;-)

Jennifer Walshe
Tonight, the audience in Konzerthaus Vienna will be honoured by the presence of a really crazy Irish composer and singer: Jennifer Walshe! On the program: a fantastic dream diary video performance, where the exceptional talent will perform accompanied by the Arditti quartet experimentally, with everyone from violin, viola and violoncello – to, of course – Walshe with her voice giving it their all. The thus evoked flood of associations, melodies and pictures ranges from a yelling pope, to twilight flights and a 20,000 year-old dream. How that sounds? Pretty much like this :-)

City Airport Train-Packages
Flying is exciting enough without getting stressed out by the ride to the airport on top of everything. The solution: save nerves by taking the train to the airport. From Wien Mitte, the CAT dashes there in 16 minutes – no traffic and by regular schedule. And when you’re at the airport in time, it leaves you enough time to relax at one of the comfortable Airport Lounges, which isn’t bad, either. CitySpotterGirl raffles 15 packages consisting of CAT return-tickets, tickets for airport-lounges and children’s tickets for the visitor’s terrace. Read here how to participate in the raffle.

U4 – the New Wave era in Vienna
Flashback to the 80s! Back then, everyone knew that “the goldfish fiddle” in the U4 and some “Dirndl” stand out by “black lips and green hair”. The legendary disco made Viennese- and pop music history and was and is cult, now and then. The unique cellar hangout is being commemorated during a conversation today at Vienna Museum, where the exhibition “Vienna Calling. A History of Pop Music” is still on until the end of March. Book author Franziska Maderthaner and ex-Blümchen Blau musician Götz Schrage share their memories of and insights to the new wave era. Free, but only if you sign up!

 Füenf
“Füenf" - a cappella comedy
Well, here we got 5 showbiz angels flying in from Germany! Though it doesn’t take too long to realise that the a cappella-fun-quintet is in reality not all angelic. With a big mouth, strong voices and entertaining lyrics the guys sing their way through topics that the world cares about: from mould cheese, to Wutbürger (enraged citizens) and neurodermatitis. And that with the tongues of angels, indeed! It’s really your own fault if those catchy earworms and legendary trash-medleys don’t put a smile on your face when you leave. A satirical-evil and charming evening of songs. Check it out here.

Die Reise (The Journey)
The last time CitySpotterGirl has conquered a whole building theatre spectacle-wise was at Paulus Manker’s “Alma” in 2012. Now, a different play is moving into a (different) building in Vienna, offering a fantastic musical-theatrical journey. It’s mega-composer Jean Barraqué’s long lost Musique de Scène from1958/1959 and Jean Thibaudeau’s original theatre short plays. The opera-spettacolo will be performed by Helga Utz and applied arts students at the former royal post & telegraph office in the 7th district. Totally odd and genius!

Candlelit march against the Right
When you are watching HCS and his blue-brown executive minions planning their rule of government right now, you just have to become active! After all, according to common sense and logic, people who sympathise with Nazis, anti-Semites and other people despising democracy have no business being in a ministry. SOS Mitmensch, Young Caritas and the Mauthausen Komitee agree and are calling for a – peaceful, of course! - candlelit march around the government quarter. So, grab your flashing lights and take a stand against the raising power of the Right.

You love him or you hate him. Compared to him, even Armin Wolf seems like a loyal court reporter. Oechsli Buch & Papier
Dear people living in “Servitenviertel”, your local literary supply is ensured because a fine book shop has just opened at Berggasse (at the former “Volta”). The darling bookseller Nina Oechsli is – you may have guess from her name – from Switzerland, but has lost her heart to Vienna eight years ago. Standing inside her shop in front of the shelves makes you feel like you’re actually in a private library. A smart mix of all genres, with a focus on contemporary fiction, and of course all the best new titles. Frau Oechsli also sells stationary; really nice!

Conditorei Sluka
Finally, the dying of traditional Viennese coffee-houses has come to an end! The former supplier to the royal court Sluka has opened a sweet branch in Kärtner Straße. But one should really walk past the first display cases with their vanilla mousse and nougat dreams to get to the rear section and spending the cake-time out enjoying the vaulted and stucco-adorned ceilings and opulent roof glazing. These historic architectural gems from 1922 (there’s also a conservatory!) happened to be found during the renovation! What luck – which brings us back to Sluka’s delicious cakes ;-)
