"Heya Girls!"
Adolf Loos called them “dilettante Hofrat’s daughters”, Oswald Haerdtl spoke of a "doll’s economy”. They both meant the same thing: women who had the audacity to be artists. Around 1900, Vienna was nevertheless also a city of creative women – but this has been completely forgotten. A magnificent exhibition at the MAK is therefore bringing a treasure to light from this week onwards: the show “The Women of the Wiener Werkstätte” with more than 800 exhibits provides an insight into the almost unknown and sometimes radical female design in Vienna between 1900 and 1930. The museum is really performing pioneering work here: around 180 (!) female artists have been identified as members of the Wiener Werkstätte, and furniture, wallpaper, textiles, graphics, fashion and ceramics are on display. There is the kimono designed by Maria Likarz that Marlene Dietrich wore in the cult film “The Blue Angel” in 1929. And Gustav Klimt's “Portrait of Johanna Staude” next to the original blouse designed by Martha Alber that Staude wears in the famous painting. Women, go and look!

Wishing you a picture-rich week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Summer Flowers from Bundesgärten
Since it's flower sprouting and planting season, here's a floral tip: from time to time, the Bundesgärten sell plants at very low prices to private greenery friends. Now, surplus summer flowers from their own production are given away again at cost reimbursements prices – in the park of Schönbrunn Palace. You have to go to the courtyard of the Botanical Collections to pick up the colourful flowers (many bedding and balcony flowers from anemone to zinnia) until 7 May. Only on this occasion may one even drive into the beautiful palace park by car.

Finally, now! The new photo retrospective by Elfie Semotan is on show at Kunst Haus Wien at long last. So it's all the cooler that a selection of her still lifes and landscape photos is now also on display. 150 works from 60 years of art and career have made it to Vienna. Don't be surprised, of course, lots of celebrities from Helmut Lang to Naomi Campbell will also be bustling about there. What can a woman do when she lives in NY and knows everyone ;-) Free entry!

Imaginario Pop-up Store
Imaginario means “unreal”. And that's exactly what it feels like to be able to go shopping again. The small start-up from Vienna, which specialises in functional and colourful sportswear, is moving its web shop into real life for one weekend. And welcomes sports fans and friends of the active lifestyle in the pop-up store on Mariahü. The high-quality leggings are available in many great designs: with “Violet Triangel”, for example, you’ll hop around in pink and blue unicorn heaven, with “Black Folk” you will do gymnastics in a flower meadow. Plus, great tank tops and shirts.

Silvio Nickol Streetfood Market
It must have been fate that CitySpotterGirl recently watched “Kiss the cook” ;-) Because now chef Silvio Nickol from Palais Coburg will actually cook his high-class creations in street food style for four days like in the film! On the menu: crispy “Currywurst” with garlic, coriander and mango, fluffy brioches with duck liver, mushrooms and hazelnut or juicy little rhubarb and strawberry cakes with egg liqueur sour cream. Tastes like a child’s birthday party and a summer holiday together. If you can't manage all 9 courses at once, you'll just have to come back.

On 180 sqm, the popular ceramic classics are now available at reduced factory sales prices! If you don't get the 5 colours of the Salzkammergut with designs like “Pur Geflammt”, “Streublumen” or “Hirsch” to your home now, it's your own fault. Faust at Wiener Staatsoper
Charles Gounod's Faust actually celebrated its premiere in Paris in 1859. But now director Frank Castorf has brought the five-act opera to the Vienna State Opera. With video projections, time jumps and cross-fades, he provides such devilish pleasure that even the devil no longer knows where’s up and where’s down. Well, up on stage Faust sells his heart and soul to Mephisto because of a (not all that innocent) Gretchen in 1960 Paris. Down in the pit, Bertrand de Billy and the State Opera Orchestra will give you goosebumps. Opera hasn't been this cool for a long time!

„Weiter Leben”
When Odeon, Hamakom and Milieu Kino join forces, you can expect the result to be something unusual: namely a walk-in theatre-video spectacle. As many as four locations in the second district are made accessible as installations, which means: you can really just totter into them for real and live! For it is the actors who will be present via video installation. The audience will be immersed in the autobiographical notes of the Austrian-American writer and Holocaust survivor Ruth Klüger. A unique artistic journey through time from 1931-2020!

Open Sewing Workshop at [kaRja]
Now, CitySpotterGirl is not exactly known for her patience ;-) Usually, things have to be quick and uncomplicated – which kind of gets in the way of a self-sewn piece. But now there's professional support from designer Katja Rozboril, who holds sewing workshops in her manufactory for textile upcycling again. With strict measures, with Covid test, FFP2 mask and only for individuals or groups from the same household. Motor Skills Park
It’s possible that sport and exercise have been somewhat neglected in recent weeks. So today's resolution is to go to one of the two motor skills parks of the City of Vienna! The larger one, with over 100 machines and 24 fitness stations, is in the 22nd district. The smaller one, with 10 training stops, is in the Helmut Zilk Park in the Sonnwend quarter. The unusual equipment is really fun, and with the dexterity and balance exercises you can follow your almost forgotten childlike play instinct. So, let’s get on the wobble star, maze plate and trampoline!

Fancy some affordable bling-bling? Lichterloh has just received a large consignment of the finest fashion jewellery from Florence! Many models are decorated with rhinestones, enamel, wood and pearls. Preview here. Especially chic: the gold UFO clips with colourful rhinestones. Welcome to vintage heaven!

Abado & Rosmanith
Word of honour! Today's online concert by the two musicians Marwan Abado and Peter Rosmanith is like going on holiday. When you close your eyes, you automatically travel – together with the two globetrotters – to Beirut, Damascus and other foreign countries. After their successful programme “Marakeb” (listen in here!), the duo is launching an eavesdropping attack today with their new repertoire “Nedam”. Nedam means “friend”. And so fans can expect a veritable musical storm of melodious, poetic and colourful songs about friendship, the sound of shells and wanderlust.

Foundling Homes
Those were some tough times! At the end of the 18th century, foundling homes became the only way out for unintentionally pregnant women. The new special exhibition at the district museum Josefstadt now focuses on the former foundling home, maternity hospital and parish of the Alser suburb. There – unbelievable, but true – as many as 750,000 (!) children were born, baptised and placed with foster parents in the countryside between 1788 and 1910. 100 exhibits of this “shame and misery” history, such as the original registers, are on display. Today there is a fascinating lecture and guided tour!

100th birthday of Joseph Beuys
Today the Volkstheater is really going all out! The German mega-artist and political activist Joseph Beuys, who was born on 12 May 1921, is being celebrated. He shocked with fat, felt, coyotes and fishing waistcoats, redefined the worldwide concept of art, and above all believed in the power of creativity, society and revolution. The (online) birthday party would certainly have pleased the unforgotten man, who sadly died in 1986. Tributes will be paid by fellow revolutionary Jonathan Meese and turbo-mime Bernhard Schütz. Horse Fantastico will also be there! Will definitely be NC-17 ;-)

Passione da Ferdinando
Since we still have to make do with take-away food, this opening comes just at the right time. The owners of the pizzeria “Da Ferdinando” have specialised in Neapolitan street food with their new mini-restaurant “Passione”. They serve cones full of seafood or deep-fried vegetables, arancini rice balls and frittate di pasta as take-away. And particularly funny: the Naples take-away version of the city's landmark “pizza a portafoglio” – a classic pizza that is folded several times like a wallet (portafoglio) and is served wrapped in paper.
