"Heya Girls!"
For me, the best thing about summer in the city are the blissful evenings. One of the prettiest places to spend one of those (or more!) in a particularly chill way is and remains, even after many years, the Open Air Kino at Augarten “Kino wie noch nie” (cinema like never before). Best combined with a visit to the incredibly great “Grünstern Gartenküche” where you can treat yourself to some fine food before and after the film amid a magically overgrown city-jungle. The menu offers only organic and regional stuff and the creatively put together pallet-pavilion is as legendary as the open fireplace. Afterwards, sated and satisfied, you wander over to the open-air cinema, where they show films again every day from 27 June (organised by Filmarchiv and Viennale). From “Bohemian Rhapsody” to the red-hot Jim Jarmusch film “The dead don’t die”. Good to know in case of bad weather or personal scheduling difficulties: all films are shown at the Metro-Kino, too, on the next day!
Wishing you a chill week,
Your CitySpotterGirl
Kino wie noch nie, Augartenspitz, Obere Augartenstr. 1, 1020 Vienna. 27 June to 25 August. 8.50 €. Web

Gerald Benesch |

Gerald Benesch: Humanimals
During his travels, Gerald Benesch, who’s actually a documentary filmmaker and ex-graphic designer, saw first and third worlds, visited all world religions in their countries of origin – and then painted them. In his show, you will discover a tweeting octopus, a rideable mermaid ram and a not-fit-for-the-living room Buddha. The large-format paintings show creatures on the verge of human, animal and divine. An ironic ode to humanity that puts itself above all else, only to ultimately become a slave to smartphone and big data. For philosophising and chuckling.
Ausstellungsraum 6., Gumpendorferstrasse 23, 1060 Vienna. Vernissage 27 June 19:00. Free entry. Web

Lena Hoschek Sale
From Dirndl to rumba top – everything out of Lena Hoschek’s fashion atelier wows all and sundry! When the congenial power-woman calls to a summer sale, you’d better hurry, for the pieces are in great demand. Like the 100% cotton “Tutti Frutti”-shopper bag with summery citrus-prints or ice-blue palms which makes for a wonderfully sweet bargain. Or how about cute little blouses with fruit (papaya, for instance) and flower motifs? Or the light “Acapulco”-strap dress? The envious looks you receive when taking out these gems are included in the price ;-)

#stimmengegenhunger
Cool Caritas campaign with a serious background: they sing a lot during a 12-hour-marathon on Mariahilferstraße today. And collect money for the climate crisis that is making us sweat here, and is causing extreme famines in Africa. In Mozambique, the hunger is so severe that people eat the seeds instead of sowing them. Numerous bands and musicians perform today in front of the Caritas Shop: Sona MacDonald joins in, as well as Martin Spengler, Geschwister Mondschein and Da Weana. And Roman Greogry cracks jokes with Reinhard Nowak. Go there, join in!

Friday Nightskating |

Friday Night Skating
One of the best ways to stay fit in Vienna! In May, there was a brilliant start into the season – and as of now, the skating starts again every Friday night. The routes are predetermined, Rolling Guards and the police provide security in terms of traffic. The meeting point is always on Heldenplatz at 20:00, with a punctual start at 21:00. This week, there’s a passive house tour, during which you visit the most important passive houses in Vienna. Route length is a bit more than 28 kilometres, including a somewhat steeper descent. Tipp: make sure to bring water!
Meeting point Heldenplatz, 1010 Vienna. 28 June 21:00. Joining in free. Web

Kinderzeit Sale
The cute gift shop Kinderzeit on Kutschkermarkt has been a goldmine and treasure trove for fine stationery, pretty drinking bottles and lunch boxes as well as enchanting chinaware for twelve years. And now the rooms are to undergo a general renovation in summer – which is why the shop has to be cleared! The big sale therefore offers a discount of 20 percent on everything from the china brands GreenGate, Rice & Overbeck. The cheery, colourful bowls, egg cups, spoons and tea services bring a whiff of flowery summer-wind into dreary cupboards.

Freihausviertelfest
Now, there are lots of street parties in Vienna, but one of them outdoes them all: the Freihausviertelfest is the biggest street hurly-burly with 20,000 visitors. The inspiration for the three-day-jamboree is the dragon fruit this year – it symbolises the cultural and culinary diversity that’s being offered. For this, the venues and shops around Schleifmühlgasse join together to create an urban feel-good-space: with food, drinks, shopping and performance. The galleries and stages of the neighbourhood contribute cool shows, like Johnny’s with indie rock by Freud, and at Galerie 12-14, they have a Talk & Dinner with an Urban Garden Cook.

Cecile Nordegg
It’s almost a bit mean to put it like this but: Mama Putz sings! And not only XXXLutz-songs but chansons and songs from Kurt Weil, Charles Trenet to Bob M. Wagner. Tonight at the Summerstage, you can convince yourself live of what the versatile actress and singer is capable of, when a masterful mix of concert and theatre turns every song into a story. Cecile Nordegg wonderfully intones songs that were originally sung by Barbara, Edith Piaf and even Frank Zappa. Charming and surprising!

Feel Good Festival
Yes, exercising usually makes you feel much better. To increase this feel-good effect, ladies should put on sportswear and hike up to Naturarena at Hohe Warte today. For you can try out different forms of physical training there: the workshops, the stages and the stalls all revolve around the newest Yoga trends (for example with goats!), fitness-workouts, bootcamp challenges, hula hoop, rope skipping, meditation, and mental strength. And since exercising makes you hungry, they serve up healthy food, like Acaí bowls, smoothies, wraps and salads.

The bookstore located at the former Ankerbrot-factory specialises in hand-made, self-published, signed and rare photobooks. In short: rare and exceptional things. Sarah McCoy
Her dark, powerful voice is unswervingly beautiful, plus she plays the piano in a wonderfully minimalist way. For a decade, Sarah McCoy scraped along playing the piano in dim pubs in New Orleans – until she was discovered by producer Chilly Gonzales, who promptly wanted to record an album with her. “Blood Siren” consists of songs McCoy wrote herself trying to process her experiences as a hobo – at times dramatically beautiful, other times melancholically sad. The American with the Blues-voice and noir-jazz-tunes is in Vienna for the first time. Listen in here.

Unknown underground Vienna
Vienna from a particularly mysterious perspective! Expert Brigitte Timmermann takes you on a walk through the old town to the dark and underground corners of the city: cellar vaults, secret alleys, mysterious riddles. The tour highlights a piece of history: it starts with the baroque burial crypt of St. Michael’s, a particularly well-preserved underground burial site, the riddle of the Roman and Middle Age excavations at Michaelerplatz to a tour of some historic cellars and passageways. And the best thing: that part of Vienna is definitely cool!

Jella Frank Porzellan
Even from afar, the huge windows catch your eye that offer a first glance of the original porcelain that’s behind them. Jella Frank’s shop is also the artist’s studio, which means the changes are good that she might open the doors to her porcelain paradise outside of the regular opening hours ;-) There, you can find the finest, hand-made plates, vases, cups and bowls: all of the unique items that are created during a 3-week work process. The pieces are bustling with hand-printed whales, rabbits, beetles and bees – elegant but still making you smile.

Joe Teecafe
Yeah, alright, Perchtholdsdorf is not in Vienna anymore. But because it’s so close and because Joe is so nice, we’ll simply suburbanise it. The unusual tea café has recently opened its doors close to the castle and ergo near to the centre, but it’s located a little hidden near a park – and was furnished according to Feng Shui rules. It’s definitely a feel-good place: not only because of the vintage furniture, the unique mural paintings and the beautiful lamps. The cuisine is great as well, vegan and vegetarian only. From an opulent breakfast and homemade protein bread to stuffed piadina, salad and pie. So nice!
