The brand-fresh label “mavi.naeht” demonstrates how trendy old things can be in more than one sense. The young brand allows the granny-like cotton handkerchief experience its second spring: With great attention to detail, heirlooms such as cloth handkerchiefs, tablecloths and traditional shirts are sewn together with cool denim, lace elements and flower prints to create airy cotton dresses and feminine blouses. Now, Oskar-Kokoschka-Platz is closed to traffic for 4 days and becomes the lively centre of the Angewandte Festival. From the “Stadtholz” project to the performance “No distance allowed Ukraine – Austria” to the exhibition “This. Changes. Everything.” – this year's exhibition is all about sustainability, the climate crisis and the war in Ukraine. In addition to guided tours through the premises of the art university with the paintings and photos created in this year's academic year, of course, but also digital art and everything hybrid in between. There are many street festivals in Vienna, but one surpasses them all: the Freihausviertel Party is the city's biggest street hurly-burly with 20,000 visitors. The 3-day event, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, stands for cultural and culinary diversity. For this, pubs and shops around Schleifmühlgasse join forces to create an urban feel-good space: with food, drink, shopping and performance. Galleries and stages will be there with cool shows; the “Duckwire Collective” will perform at Xeno and the “Kuare Salsa Band” will make the summer a little hotter on the Armacord stage!

Female power reloaded
Beyonce, Madonna, Lady Gaga – pop music has its great divas. It’s quite different in classical music, which is why power ladies like Josefine Weinlich, who founded Europe's first ladies' orchestra in 1868, are considered true pioneers in the male-dominated field. 150 years after the first appearance of the ladies' orchestra, Esther Abrami and Her Ensemble once again perform an all-female orchestra on the same stage. Apart from pieces by Clara Schuhmann or Ilse Weber, they play “Freie Gedanken” by Josefine Weinlich, a waltz like those popular at the Vienna World's Fair!

For a shocking eternity, art was reserved for men alone. Hard to imagine today, especially when eight female artists fill an entire gallery with their works. This is the case at the current “Feminale”. All the works give sensuality, value and permanence to apparent trivialities, forgotten or found or used materials. Judith P. Fischer's rock-hard upholstered sculptures are all about irritation, Andrea Pernegr paints everyday objects into oases of joy and Marie-France Goerens composes canvas remnants into virtuoso textile collages.

From glossy magazine to collage
The concept is simple: patterns, photographs and the like are cut into pieces and then tinkered together to form new works. The procedure was perfected by the queen of collage Elisabeth Wild, whose oeuvres can currently be admired at the mumok. Anyone who has fallen in love with the mosaic-like creations gets their creative money's worth at today's workshop: using exciting motifs from glossy magazines, you create your very own collage, with a clear focus on materiality, design principles and formal language. The perfect new outfit for bare walls at home!

Here, in a cosy atmosphere, between light wooden furniture and chilling beats, dying plants are being nursed back to health by the mother-daughter team, and at calligraphy or macramé workshops creative dreams will blossom even if you don’t have a green thumb. Il Bosso
This used to be the home of the beautiful Hasbach antiquarian bookshop, but now they serve fresh bread here instead of old books. To be more precise: focaccia – and in excellent quality. All the ingredients are specially carted in from Italy so that the fluffy flatbread can be filled with delicious things. Salami, dried tomatoes and lemon cream, for example, or mortadella with pistachio cream. There are enough fillings to never get bored, and because this is also a day bar, they serve aperitivo and great cocktails with it. They also have a nice Schani garden and amusing murals as extras ;-)
