editorial

"Heya Girls!"
For some time, more and more important, however, mostly unknown historic Viennese women are brought into the limelight. City walks that allow you to follow in the footsteps of women are being organised. Biographies are being researched. Starting Saturday, an exhibition in Mariahilf, for example, is dedicated to the name-giving women for streets and parks in the 6th district. And the Hofmobiliendepot presents a lady who comes from an illustrious family, but led an unusual life: the Red Archduchess. Elisabeth “Erzsi” of Austria, favourite granddaughter of Emperor Franz Josef, married at the age of 19, gave birth to 4 children and got divorced. She changed her political views, fell in love with a social democrat und became the ordinary “Miss Petznek” (photo) in her second marriage. Actor Elisabeth- Joe Harriet uses exhibited furniture in the museum to tell us about the adventurous life of the dedicated social democrat. Indeed: It gradually dawns on us that Vienna has a female history as well. And, on top of that, an enormous one!

Wishing you a lovely week

Cheese maker Marlene Günther
She studied organic agriculture in Vienna – and thereby fell in love with cheese making. Since this can be better done in the countryside, power woman Marlene Günther left the city behind. And spent her first summer on alpine pastures. She became inflamed with passion, since then, she only moves forward: She studied the culture of mountain dwellers in the Peruvian Andes and East African organic farming in Uganda. This is what she is going to talk about in the club alpha tonight. But not only about how to make cheese out of milk. The mountain nomad will also bring along some homemade pieces to taste.

Dance Box – Private Dancer
I’m your private dancer, a dancer for money, I’ll do what you want me to do – Tina Turner’s lyrics are coming true this week in the heart of Resselpark! A sort of jukebox, big enough for you to enter, will be placed here for 3 days. The performance duo Tümay Kilincel & Jungyun Bae is waiting inside to perform a dance chosen by the visitor – in a private live show. After all, the enjoyment only costs 2 €. Admittedly, the show is not completely „private“ – the gig is filmed and shown online. Crazy!

The truffle prince and his white queen! No, this is not a fairy tale, but the story of Thomas Edlinger and the precious tuber. The restaurant proprietor, celebrity chef and author is dedicated to exactly this culinary issue: truffles. Edlinger is now opening an authentic truffle market in front of his restaurant “Pan e Giardin” for everyone who is equally addicted to the stuff. Exchange recipes, taste and buy: Rarities from Piedmont and from Croatia, wild boar sausage with truffle, truffled honey, salsa tartufata or truffled butter. Well then, Buon appetito!

Pam Ann
It’s a safe bet that she is the most shameless airhostess between heaven and earth. At the end of her Europe tour she will touch down in Vienna. Pam Ann shoves her trolley like no other, is always tremendously busy and simply asks the question “Coffee, tea or me?”. Let’s wait for the story she is making up. She is sadistic, wicked and rather vulgar – but her audience all over the world loves her wit that is rather near the knuckle. Ready for take off? By the way: the show at Stadtsaal is for over 18s only and will be held in English.

Vienna arouses
Sigmund Freud would have been delighted. It’s about love, sex & eroticism: Nina Bauernfeind reads out historic, bizarre and hot episodes of Vienna between 1780 and 1913. And she grants unusual insights into the old, obscure Vienna. She tells about the maid with the gentleman, the soldier with the young baroness and about the evidence that the back of a girl’s head is indicative of her lust. Her references: newspaper articles, secret letters and etiquette guides of the Belle Epoque. Takes place on a Sunday morning in a cafe ;-) With musical entertainment, by the way.

The documentary „Oh yeah, she performs!“ was the beginning of a great love for her. Or rather for her music. Now fans and everyone wanting to become a fan of Fräulein Humpel have the chance to see her live. She is going to perform songs of her latest CD “We Are Fish” – with 100% music in her blood. The songs are louder and more powerful than her previous ones - a true advantage when it comes to dancing! She still sings about the existential in life, for example about failures in “The Fall” or about overcoming one’s weaker self in “The menace is my head”. The equally charming Heidi Happy & Band will act as support band!

X-friends
Three friends, fortysomething and all of them are prisoners of the constraints of our modern social system. Former catering boss Holger Holz is unemployed and his workaholic wife Anne noticeably takes up his time. And the overworked sculptor Pierre Pilz eventually has to finish his sculpture series “X-friends”. To get over the stressful daily routine, the three of them start to omit words in order to make good for the lost time. The result: a grotesque witty theatre play by Felicia Zeller, chosen as the best play of the year 2013.

Pop-Up „Goldener Hirsch“ at Imperial
Well, a pop-up is nothing unusual, since they seem to spring up like mushrooms. But this one is. During the Salzburg Festival, Viennese gourmets enjoy dining at the restaurant “Zum Goldenen Hirschen” in Salzburg. However, today, Salzburg’s top chefs are heading to Vienna and settle at Imperial. In their luggage: Salzburger Nockerl and other regional delicacies. They even created a special menu: “Pork on a stone” meets “autumn salad with sauté hare”. And “Attersee zander filet” meets “Rigo-Jancsi” with spice pear. You don’t have to understand the latter, but you definitely have to try it.

Burgtheater Kantine
We all already passed it a thousand times, that’s true, but still: This is a top-secret insiders’ tip. Firstly: one has to know how to get into the Burgtheater-Kantine (clandestine entrance in the side wing, vis-a-vis the petrol station, pass the porter, he will help you). Secondly: the cheapest lunch menu in town, two courses for less than five euros! We do not only love the honest, tasty cooking (liver dumplings in beef broth, Styrian stewed meat with vegetables and fresh horseradish), but also the fact that two tables are reserved for the Burgtheater. Lunch with theatre celebs! More lunch tips: in our new book!
