Thomas Glavinic at literary festival
Pages and pages of inspiration for your summer reading! Starting today, renowned as well as up-and-coming Austrian authors will read from their works each Thursday in the MQ. The festival will open with “Der Jonas-Komplex” (“The Jonas Complex”) by bestselling author Thomas Glavinic and music by songwriter and pianist Martin Klein. Before the main reading, the mike will be given to young authors like Katharina Winkler whose debut “Blauschmuck” (“Blue Jewellery”) was highly praised. Further reading highlights: Norbert Gstrein on 28 July, Michael Köhlmeier on 4 and Friederike Mayröcker on 11 August.

Ai Weiwei: translocation – transformation
Vienna will really be a hotspot for modern art until November! For the first time, star-artist Ai Weiwei will be showing a large individual presentation in Austria. The exhibition will not only focus on his own “nomadic” biography, but also on the current refugee crisis. The Chinese conceptual artist built an ancient ancestral temple of the Ming dynasty (that was assembled from 1300 single parts) in the “21er Haus” and used 2,5 tons of antique teapot spouts to create a carpet. Lotus blossoms made of life vests are swimming in the baroque pond situated in the park of Belvedere Palace. The sensation of this summer!

Second Selly
Who doesn’t know the following scenario: A must-have item that somehow looked gorgeous when you tried it on in the shop but doesn’t really fit now and so gets banished to the furthest corner of your wardrobe. It would be doomed to lead quite a miserable life there if “Second Selly” didn’t ensure its glorious resurrection. This doesn’t only save resources and avoid waste, but makes others happy as well. For two days, the second-hand pop-up boutique in Ankerbrot’s former bread factory will transform bad buys into favourite pieces which can be purchased for bargain prices. Merci!

Night at the high rope course
A cool excursion tip for adventurous night owls: During the summer, you can go climbing late in the evening at the high rope course on Kahlenberg. Hundreds of lampions provide a romantic atmosphere in the branches of the giant trees every Friday and Saturday when the sun sets. In addition, headlamps can be borrowed on request. You can test your skills on different courses with shaky nets and wobbly rope bridges. Flying Foxes, which enable you to speed from tree to tree, add another adrenalin boost. The view up to the treetops and down to the city lights is simply breathtaking!

Very original! From now on, (almost) everything that burns is reduced by 30 % in Hietzing’s “Kastlwerkstatt”. Katie Kern
Katie Kern is the woman with the great voice who never travels without her guitar and country-rock songs written by herself. The native Styrian didn’t learn that only at Vienna Conservatory, but directly in the Mecca for country music – Nashville/Tennessee. Each year, she lives there for several months in order to listen to the great artists of the scene and write her own songs. Today, she will take the audience, with earthy grooves and poetic texts, on a journey from Americana to outlaw country to contemporary Nashville pop. And since it’s a public concert at WUK, the entry is free. Worth a listen!

Full moon ride at the Old Danube
Finally an event for the Romantics amongst us: Hopefully in fair weather, you can let your feelings boom unopposed and go on a boat trip on the Old Danube, enjoying the full moon and the mild evening air. The local boat rental companies will extend their opening hours so you can cruise to the most romantic spaces until shortly before midnight – hopefully in charming company and, in any case, with a bottle of Prosecco which is included in the price. Sailing boats, rowing boats, electric boats and pedal boats will be at your disposal for the nightly excursion. Aloha oe!

When a concert will take place at Superspense in the magnificent Dogenhof, you can go there without checking first what kind of concert it will be because its audio-analogue-section consists of music experts who are well versed as far as rooting up musical treats is concerned. This evening, the multicultural group “de Ruts” will perform here. The Austrian singer of the otherwise French-Chilean trio is touring through Europe at the moment – and this will be the only concert she will give in Vienna. All those who are still not sure can listen and groove into the Chilean-inspired happy sound here.

Three very young people from Krems and surroundings have set out to try their luck in the fourth district. Just around the corner of the CitySpotterGirl, an existing restaurant has been renovated and renewed in record time. Trendy modern lamps have been installed above the old bar. The kitchen reflects the biography of the owners – one of the Ruhm brothers returned from Singapur just for this restaurant project. Therefore you cannot miss the Asian influence: Sashimi salad with sea trout from Traisental, Chicken Kushiyaki and curry at noon. Incredibly committed, incredibly friendly!
