Tipps der Stadtspionin

editorial

"Heya Girls!"
Now it's getting a bit drawig, as they say in my home region of Upper Austria. Meaning: It's urgent! Because due to our extended winter break, an exhibition that ends in a fortnight has not yet appeared in your favourite newsletter – and it’s one you absolutely have to see! Rajkamal Kahlon is showing a cross-section of her entire oeuvre at the Kunsthalle im MuseumsQuartier. The US artist, who lives in Berlin, packs big questions – such as women's rights or how we deal with our colonial heritage – into enchantingly beautiful paintings and drawings. Bright colours, sometimes pink and sky-blue, suggest a seductive world. Until you take a closer look. Then you will discover vaginas sewn shut with pink bows or notice that the middle one of the charming “Three Graces” is wearing a mini skirt and a crop top with a bomb belt, like those used by suicide bombers. “Which side are you on?” Kahlon asks in the title of the exhibition. Strong stuff!

Wishing you an enigmatic week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Caritas reStart & preWork
Shopping with a good conscience is the motto at this Caritas pop-up event today! As part of “reStart” and “preWork”, young people can get a taste of the working world. In the reStart workshop, for example, backpacks are sewn, vases are made from old glass bottles and jewellery is conjured from copper wire, while in the preWork wood and digital workshop, small pieces of wooden furniture are produced. From practical to decorative, you can snatch lots of things for your home, with 100% of the proceeds going to the two projects!

Basis Art Fair
Sensitive ink drawings of the human body, ship models in glass bottles, colourful mountain landscapes: For three days, you can enjoy the Basis Art Fair to your heart’s content in the heritage-protected Art Nouveau theatre on the Otto Wagner grounds. The fair does not show works by established artists, but by 25 selected self-taught artists. Many of the works can also be purchased right there on the spot. Admission is free all days and a visit to the historic, newly developed area south of the Steinhof grounds is always interesting anyway.

Chinchilla Arschloch, waswas
Whew, what a title! But first of all: the content will be even more savage. One rant follows the next, the motoric outbursts of the stage cast are impressive – but absolutely not acted. All the actors suffer from Tourette's syndrome and so no text is safe, no movement repeatable and the stage equipment has to be brought to safety. The question arises as to how much lack of intention the theatre can actually take, but at the end it’s clear: the play is not about Tourette's. It is about the audience, about theatre and the fear of losing control. Special!

 Georg Baselitz
Baselitz@Night
When the world is upside down, Georg Baselitz is often to blame: since 1969, the German artist has painted almost all his motifs upside down. The Kunsthistorisches Museum now dedicates its spring show to precisely these works. With naked facts, the exhibition takes us through all of the artist's artistic styles, for only nudes are on display. These have been juxtaposed with “naked” works by old masters such as Parmigianino, Correggio and Rubens – and tonight you can get a taste of the nudes on a guided tour including drinks and canapés!

Sinnesrauschen
Now, this will make your ears ring, rush, and pulse! As many as four power-bands will provide de luxe sound at Haus der Musik today and will more than live up to the festival title “Sinnesrauschen” (symphony of the senses). It starts at 19:00 with the Austrian indie rock quartet “Please Madame”, consisting of four boys and some irresistible live energy. This is followed by experimental-melancholic soundscapes by Christl and finally Cousins like Shit with their self-proclaimed “Avant Trash” and the feel-good sound of Good Wilson will inspire the crowd. Cool!

Block Party: 1 Year of Marsha & Magnus
That sounds like the perfect Saturday plan! A year ago, the two artists Stefanie Sargnagel and Stefanie Gunzy opened their super-cool queer-feminist concept store and have since mutated into true street party queens. It goes without saying that the party for the first anniversary is going to be bombastic and so today there will be a famously cool Block Party at the atelier. Special guest is Candy Licious with a traffic lights couple merch sale, and of course Stefanie Sargnagel's shirts and prints will be at the pop-up. It will also get foodilicous thanks to a flea market with drinks and snacks, so don't miss out!

A Sunday for Elisabeth
Those who would like to end the week in a feudal ambience can do so in a Sisi-like manner in her “Castle of Dreams”. Today, the former imperial Hermes Villa opens its doors free of charge for a short journey into the life of the avant-garde royal lady. The tour starts with a reading of Sisi's letters to her husband Franz Josef. Afterwards, visitors can design their own stationery in the studio, and from 14:00 onwards they can learn a lot about the Hermes Villa and the furniture the Empress herself chose for it. It’s a safe bet that by then, at the latest, you’ll be thinking about moving in!

Susanne Bisovsky: Spring Salon
A weekend tip for fashionistas: Couture star Susanne Bisovsky opens her exclusive private salon for two days and invites you to try on her refined and highly sought-after haute couture pieces, which meander somewhere between Biedermeier and Vivienne Westwood. Even those with not so well stuffed wallets will have a great time because on these two days prototypes of past collections, pret-a-porter pieces and accessories such as hats and stockings are 25 percent off. And there will also be a small flea market! The salon is open to all those interested, but registration is requested.

Face to face with llamas and alpacas: just looking into their big round eyes makes you happy. Maybe because it always looks like the snuggle-monsters are grinning all the time. Yoga makes you even happier in the company of these good-mood animals – and that's what you can do today in Essling. The mats are set up in a circle outside, the animals are the centre of attention: their serenity and calmness, in combination with Hatha yoga exercises, also helps the participants to relax and recharge their batteries for everyday life. Lamaste!

5 pairs of solar sheep socks
Wien Energie probably has the most natural lawnmower in the world on its solar plant in Donaustadt (the largest in Austria, by the way): 150 Jura sheep have their home here and are allowed to feast daily on the lush grass of the plant. In cooperation with DJ Anna Ullrich, 200 pairs of cuddly socks have now been created from their soft wool – and CitySpotterGirl is giving away 5 of them! It's easy to enter the raffle: Just send an informal e-mail to redaktion@diestadtspionin.at with the subject “Gewinnspiel Socken” by 31 March. Good luck! :-)

Jennifer Aniston, Michelle Obama and Harry Styles swear by it: the Reformer. The training bench is actually a bedrock in the Pilates world, but if the stars think it's cool, our inner couch potato might like it too – especially at the June! Science Fiction(s)
Who knew: Star Wars Princess Leia's hair dumplings are inspired by the traditional hairstyle of unmarried women of the Hopi tribe! This is precisely the kind of cultural appropriation that the current exhibition at the Weltmuseum is all about. And it looks at both points of view: What do we adopt from indigenous peoples and what do we inspire them with? 20 works illustrate future scenarios, such as what our world might look like after conquest by aliens and the extinction of humankind. Vernissage is today, but be quick – the number of visitors is limited!

Chaplin
He finds Hitler ridiculous, dangerous, exposes him as crazy. And what's more, this badly coiffed cretin has stolen his moustache! Charlie Chaplin is at the peak of his career when he starts working on the script for “The Great Dictator”. He is willing to put everything on the line, but his wife and brother, fearful of the consequences, try every means to dissuade him from making the provocative film. The German-language premiere of “Chaplin, 1939” can be marvelled at for the first time in Austria – humorous, tender and extremely reflective.

Flower power and a green kick of freshness transform the Baroque State Hall of the National Library into an artistic garden building. The 400-year-old garden art collection of the former court library and imperial private library will be on display! From views of historical gardens to landscape architecture of the 20th and 21st centuries, works of art, garden plans and photographs, some of which have never been shown before, can be admired, giving an idea of the opulence of these green spaces, some of which have disappeared – and making you want to get down to business in your own garden!

Louis Vuitton
On Graben, the luxury labels are currently playing location-hopping and so Louis Vuitton on Tuchlauben makes room for Dior to snuggle up to Meinl am Graben a few metres away. The result: spectacular luxury on four floors, where cool skateboards adorn the sales areas alongside LV classics. Star architect Peter Marino has had a blast on these, by the way, so that at times you think yourself in a gallery with all the poppy Erwin Wurm artworks. Between the Scandi seating niches, however, the sugar snake lookalike chrome-plated spiral staircase with ramp is definitely the highlight!

Mama Royal
Aha, here's another way to make kebabs! At Mama Royal, which is part of the Huth family empire, the oriental dish is now interpreted in a really creative way. The bull kebab consists of beef chuck shawarma, grilled onions and habanero mayo, the crispy chicken is served with red slaw and mango salsa. And the meat is cooked on the Josper charcoal grill. There's nothing quite like it in Vienna yet. The interior also marches to a different tune – graffiti and neon lettering cover the black-coloured brick walls. Extra nice: as a welcome, they first serve you a bowl of popcorn ;-)
