"Heya Girls!"
Can you imagine this? 1,200 billion (meaning 1.2 trillion) photos were taken in 2017. Almost all of them with mobile phones, obviously. And no, despite rumours to the contrary, they were not all taken by me ;-) Thanks to the smartphone, numbers have doubled within four years, we really have become a snap-a-shot-society. Now if we do photograph this much, we might at least take good pictures! Well, the fair Photo+Adventure is taking place in Vienna next weekend – and they offer really amazing photo-workshops and photo walks with professionals there. You learn how to do nature photography (photo on the left), stroll through Christmas Markets with your camera, or practise the photographing of the city’s panorama at dusk. Romantics will get to know what you need to create the prettiest vintage style photos with the simplest of means. And at Nightdreams, you dive into the glaring darkness of a Viennese night.

Wishing you a well-lit week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Tri:Sign
Their lowest common creative denominator is their love for handcraft and timeless design. And since there were a number of successful joint projects before, the designer-triumvirate Tehilla Gitterle, Susanne Gstettner and Angelika Gregoric now open a joint store in the 1st district today. With purist fashion by anima, colourful glass bead jewellery by sakiba, and minimalist fashion playing with form by LiNUSCH. They’re being joined by guest labels like “La Joie de Vivre” with artfully printed scarves, Walli Jungwirth with hats, and Nina Bernert with wooden clogs.

Laura Gibson
November always sees the blue bird on approach to the Porgy, and the Blue Bird Festival makes exciting musicians flutter into town. For today’s start off, you can hear the amazing alternative folk singer Laura Gibson from Oregon, among others. Many of her contemplative and gentle songs are about her father’s death when she was just a teenager. Her pieces are supposed to feel like fables, according to the singer, and that’s why her new album “Goners” is all but swarming with animals, transformation, spook, and forebodings. Sounds sombre, but it’s not! Listen here.

Niko Pirosmani
In Georgia every child knows him, here, however, Niko Pirosmani (1862-1918) is rather a forgotten hero of the avantgarde. For him, art was a wide-open field, he himself an outsider and wanderer between city and country. The autodidact painted his radiant and emphatic pictures mostly for the Georgian inns around the turn of the century. The Albertina is currently dedicating a comprehensive solo exhibition to this “wanderer between worlds”. His stunning works often show animals or scenes from the life of old Georgia and its people. A revelation!

Vitra Sample Sale
A true insider’s tip and sublime occasion for design-aficionados! People camp outside at below-zero temperatures for this in London – and in Vienna, too, it’s recommended to be there in time. Because the iconic Swiss company Vitra opens its Viennese warehouse today! Meaning: you’ll never get the exclusive furniture pieces this cheap otherwise. Chairs, shelves, lamps, tables, and countless design classics in particular are given away as stock items in good condition, reduced almost by half. Including: iconic chairs by Eames and Panton.  Heads-up: hard to find! Address for GPS is Breitenleerstraße 101!

40 Years Women’s Shelters
Horrifying: violence against women affects one in five of us, statistically! It’s good that we’ve had Wiener Frauenhäuser (women’s shelters) for 40 years, where those affected find refuge and support. Today, this anniversary is celebrated with a charity-party at the Rathaus, with a great programme: positive vibes are, among others, provided by the Weinviertler group “Skolka”, the cool music project DelaDap plus creative fuzzy-head Stani Vana, and the “Fearleaders” – male, bearded cheerleaders in short panties ;-) 100% of the proceeds will benefit women and children in the Wiener Frauenhäuser.

Which all but guarantees inspiring insights into the funky, colourful artists’ world and brains. Instead of planning your own route, you can join various tours with pros of the art world from 14:00: you have the head of collection from the Leopold Museum leading you to selected studios in the 3rd, 6th, and 15th districts, for instance, or you can stroll through the seventh district with the curator of the Kunst Haus. Wellness-Experience-Day
Since the season of energy-consuming sniffles and Xmas-shopping is starting again now, we should definitely treat ourselves to something nice! Which makes the holistic feelgood-programme at Atzgersdorf this weekend sound really tempting – with a wide variety of products, try-out courses, and counselling services all about spirituality and gentle medicine. There will be meditating, mantra-singing, you can indulge in short Shiatsu massages, snuffle healing essential oils, and draw flowers. Plus: books to browse, a “Visionsplates”-art exhibition, and vegan treats. Ooom!

Schiff Ahoi
The Wiener Boulevard Bühne exclusively consists of non-professional actors and actresses. Now the amateur group steams in with a droll story centered around a cruise ship. The plot: Shortly before putting to sea, William Blei, captain of “Old Green Elisabeth”, had learned that the shipping company sold his beloved ship. And as if that wasn’t enough, the new owner is actually aboard – although incognito. The illustrious passenger-society is completed by unpleasant neighbours, former lovers, and the artists “Siegbert and Joy”. Sometimes shallow entertainment is simply pretty great!

Reading means adventure inside your mind. Bookworms can now acquire sophisticated literary input for it at the book fair by Herbert Bauer, who has been collecting antiquarian treasures for over 20 years (!) and organises a fine, small market every now and again at the VHS. This time, 25 private exhibitors and small entrepreneurs are offering their bibliophile rarities, historical books and antique stationery. From paperbacks to first editions – a true treasure mine! The entry is free and since browsing always makes hungry - there’s a small buffet with many tasteful snacks for bookworms.

The first snow has already trickled in, the countdown to Christmas is on – and the Advent wreath needs to be obtained until 2 December, dear ladies! You only have to bring pruning shears for cutting branches, they have plenty of material and deco-stuff there. And if you do prefer to gift yourself with a professional flower arrangement after all, or are looking for additional floral Christmas decorations, you may look around the Advent exhibition there.

John Cage
Piano music at a (deliberately) loud location – an original concept! With a background, for New York avantgarde legend John Cage was cultivating a rather relaxed relationship with ambient noise, so to speak ;-) On the occasion of Wien Modern, pianist Marino Formenti takes on works by Cage and plays them in coffeehouses. On Saturday, Cafe Prückel was turned into „Cafe Cage”, today there’s a concert taking place at Ungar Grill in Burggasse and tomorrow the sounds at Café Zweistern will be drowned out by piano music. An exciting melange of everyday-life and music!

Bock auf Kabarett: Gala 2018
Giggling for a good cause: as many as six cabaret stars will take to the stage today in service of a worthy event to support Ute Bock’s refugee project. There won’t be a dry eye in the room with this humorous line-up: cabaret dream-team Monica Weinzettl (who has joined the world of bloggers as Weltverschönerin) and Gerold Rudle enact scenes of a marriage with “Drama Queen & Couch Potato” and the duo Kaufmann-Herberstein, too, provides good vibes and a tickling of the funny bone with “Alles wird Gut”. Coffee Shots
Very interesting! Viennese photographer Max Strohmeier doesn’t develop his analogue pictures with conventional photo chemicals but with coffee. His “Coffee Shots” are about Vienna and its people: urban still lives, captured on analogue black-and-white film. Sometimes he photographs every-day things, then unusual things, at times the photos seem euphoric, other times melancholic. Right now, the coffee-street photos are exhibited in the charming Café Z in the 15th district, which was CitySpotterGirl’s “Restaurant of the Week” once. Check it out online here.

Edgar Honetschläger: Go Bugs Go!
Giving insects back their habitat by purchasing land together – this is the ingenious plan of Edgar Honetschläger. Today, the Austrian artist and filmmaker presents his large-scale international project at Kunsthalle: he founded an NGO, harvested several kilos of vegetables in his own huge garden in Rome, cooked it, filled it into jars and will give them away packaged in cardboard boxes at Kunsthalle today to all “Buggies” who are ready to become stakeholders of “Go Bugs Go!” for a minimum contribution, thus becoming (fallow) land owners. Great project!

How did women use to wear their hair all pretty in the year dot? Wien Museum is hosting a double lecture today on the topic of historical hairdos and beauty, complementing the current “Skin Deep” exhibition. First, you can embark on a time journey through the last 300 years of Viennese hairstyles from wigs to bobs, afterwards curator Michaela Lindinger uses extensive photographic material to describe Sisi’s path to a beauty icon. And she reveals which means the young empress used to bring her looks to perfection and how she purposefully used it as an instrument of power.

Dr.med. Eckart von Hirschhausen
There’s something about this guy – he’s smart, likable, quick-witted, and really funny! Today, the German doctor and comedian is in Vienna where he muses publicly about finiteness and humour in honour of Viktor Frankl. The topic of finiteness had fascinated Frankl since he was 5 years old, Hirschhausen is a rather late bloomer, but at 50, he has discovered the appeal of impermanence for himself and his new stage programme “Endlich”. While all are looking for anti-aging, he searches and finds the advantages of the second half of life with mirth and profundity. Exceptional and special – better secure tickets quickly!
