"Heya Girls!"
Where to in this damp-cold January? Well, to the pleasantly-warm Jörgerbad! Though not for swimming or splashing around but for amazement and exploring. On altogether five Sundays, the entire bathing area turns into a mega-cool parallel world that invites brains and hearts to dive in and under. Performance-artist and neo-swimming-pool master Oleg Soulimenko has really pulled all the artistic and atmospheric stops with his piece “Swimming Pool”! At times, it’s eerily empty and quiet, then synchronized swimmers provide movement, free divers create air and dreamy bubbles, then sound and fog bring inspiration. And ladies can wander around – in slippers please – between the pools and galleries of Vienna’s oldest indoor swimming pool (opened in 1914!). Let yourself get sucked in by the reflecting H2O-surfaces, the temple-like quietness, the mystic aura. It’s amazing! Especially since your own wishes, worries, emotions and fantasies shift as if by magic.

Wishing you an unusual week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

 Edgar Reitz
Retrospective Edgar Reitz
He’s one of the really great German filmmakers and x-rayers of the past: 85-year-old Edgar Reitz. What made him famous was his epically long trilogy “Heimat” (Home), which broke all the records in terms of number of viewers. The almost 60 hours of film material tell about the entire (!) German post-war era in a revolutionary and bold way based on the fictitious village of Schabbach. They were followed by four other “history lessons”, most recently in 2013 about the emigration wave to Brazil. Starting today, they can all be seen at Metro Kino. Part 1 & 2 tonight, with Edgar Reitz present – free entry!

  Koloman Moser / Leopold Museum
Vienna around 1900
The masters of the Viennese Art Nouveau and groundbreaking expressionists have been assembled in one big exhibition: Leopold Museum shows major works of Klimt, Moser, Gerstl, and Kokoschka in an exciting combination. You’ll get to see Gustav Klimt’s “Am Attersee” just as well as Koloman Moser’s painting “Venus in the Grotto”, and exceptional designs from furniture to artisan craftwork made by the hand of multi-talent and co-founder of Wiener Werkstätte, Josef Hoffmann. Plus, works by Richard Gerstl and Oskar Kokoschka. It's a familiar topic – but always captivating!

A Celebration of Nelson Mandela
Today at Minoritenkirche, we celebrate a truly great representative of humanity: “Tata” Nelson Mandela. On 18 July, the brave freedom fighter and Nobel Peace Prize winner from South Africa would have turned 100 years old. More than enough reason for the Vienna Boys Choir (plus girls choir!) to haul out the big guns, artistically speaking. Together with the Bochabela String Orchestra from the townships of Bloemfontein, they will perform the famous “Nelson Mass”. It’s known as a symbol of peace and hope. Erwin Steinhauer will recite texts by Mandela. Harmonious!

Vienna Ice Dream
The cheesy Christmas glitter has been removed, but Rathausplatz is keeping it going with colourful lights and cool music. The annual Ice Dream opens today, ice princesses and ice skaters can drive their circles with the magnificent backdrop of Häupl’s home (for now) in the background until March. What’s nice is that you can also glide through the park on one-way paths and aren’t limited to cruising on a rectangular site. Plus, there are lots of food stands standing around and for the opening, they’ll bake free ice pancakes – and the ice skating is free today, too!

St. Michael – From roof to vault
Today, people with a thirst for knowledge once more have the chance to see a place that is usually hard to spy out: St. Michael’s Church – more precisely, its upstairs & downstairs! First, it’s off to uncovering 800-year-old secrets at the attic, then you can inspect the baroque organ. And finally, it’s time to go down to the vault to discover why so many corpses there are not decayed but have been mummified as if by magic. By the way: we are talking about one of the oldest and one of the few Romanesque churches in the city here. It starts at 10! Don’t forget your Sunday best ;-)

Dennis Jale & Original Elvis Band
It’s rocking and rolling in the holy halls of Wiener Metropol. Austrian singer Dennis Jale (his real name is Rainer-Dietfried Kaspar by the way ;-) is on tour through Europe with the Original Band of Elvis Presley. Since 2002, the rock musician, who has been very successful in Las Vegas among other places, has been performing with Elvis band legends James Burton, Glen D. Hardin and Ronnie Tutt. And the fact that he even bears a real resemblance to the Kind could really make a girl scream! So please dress up and come rock. The King has been resurrected.

Nina Proll: Suburb songs
Nina Proll’s role as “Vorstadtweib” (suburb bitch), in which she’s tottering across TV screens again right now, has piqued her musical interest in the topic. And so in her program, Proll is interpreting songs about the life and going-ons in the suburbs. Accompanied by a 5-man-band and two dancers as well as her striking charm, she swings and wisecracks her way through pop, hits, folk music and cabaret – from Seiler & Speer’s “Ham kummst” and “g´schupften Ferdl” to unequivocally equivocal “Suburb tunes”. Whether hottie or grande dame – she is really good at both!

Hiraeth
The Viennese dance theatre group Unicorn Art is circling and jumping at really exciting questions in the rewarded and newly launched piece “Hiraeth“! Like, to what extent humanity is influenced by the past. Whether an individual must (unconsciously) carry the history-load of its ancestors. And if such traumata can actually be found in the genes. Setting and object of the ingenious plot: just the Republic of Austria – with all her psycho-historical heritage. There is a lot to wade through dance and music-wise before the audience gets kicked into the future with a hopeful jump. Worth seeing!

Highlights of Wiener Werkstätte
The beginning of the 20th century was a very creatively productive time and at “Wiener Werkstätte”, fantastic objects, jewellery and furniture were made. But also many beautiful handiworks that are largely unknown. Now, there is a book dedicated to artful lace and embroidery works from the time between 1906 to 1930. This lesser known area of Wiener Werkstätte is the object of today’s presentation – with objects, sketches and designs by artists such as Mathilde Flögl, but also blueprints, pattern for bobbin lace, sample folders and historic photographs. Fascinating!

Winter is Good for Fish
CitySpotterGirl has already spotted one exotic theatre location (see editorial), but today another one follows! Starting now, Ex-TAG-director and neo-theatre founder Margit Mezgolich’s first production is running in the abandoned pub in the 14th district. And the secluded, intimate setting (for only 25 audience members) is pretty much perfect for the plot of the newly adapted Anna-Weidholzer-novel “Winter is Good for Fish” since it tells the life of a woman who is muddling her way through life on the fringes of society – in a humorous, brave and touching way. Today’s premiere!

CitySpotterGirl is in seventh (pattern) heaven! Not surprising among all these colourful patterns and artful designs that are decorating pillows, blankets and ceramics in Georg Rosegger’s new mamabule-shop. Since he’s been sixteen, the travelling salesman has jetted round the world to – among other things - bring home unusual products. Now the prettiest things are being sold in this chic shop: much of it comes from small fair-trade manufactories from (South) Africa, for example the neat Mongoose bags or the decorative window picture frames. But they also offer fancy Hamman scarfs and plaids from Turkey.

kaoo
Judging by its aesthetics, kaoo could as well be in New York. Huge loft-architecture, black walls, floors and ceiling, rough wooden tables, high windows. It definitely doesn’t look like a classic “Chinese”. But despite the industrial style, you can tell that a woman is in charge: by the chopsticks with flower-design, the reduced-elegant tableware and an enormously large picture of 3 women on the wall. Very, very chic indeed! The food is actually Asian though – quite some decent fusion cuisine, where you can find a lot from Pho to dumplings and chrispy chicken. For vegetarians as well as for meat-eaters.
