"Heya Girls!"
Alright, ladies, we have arrived. Just a few more days and then it's: Christmas, the end of the year, a break, a breather. Even incorrigible optimists like me are in dire need of that after a year like this. For the past 10 months, life has felt like riding a damn stubborn donkey. (Though we've all become world champions at improvising as a result, not bad either). The next time we hear from each other, it will be 2021 already, and I promise everything will be better. So the motto for the holidays is: no more stress, relax as much as possible. We can also save ourselves the kitchen madness for the various Christmas dinners. Professional chefs kindly provide us with ready-made menus for the feast: the Tian takes care of us with ingeniously-elegant vegetarian cuisine, TV star Tim Mälzer now also delivers his famous “Bäm-Boxes” from the Bullerei in Hamburg to Austria, the Dogenhof prepares a four-course Christmas menu, the Gourmet Gasthaus Freyenstein also delivers the New Year's Eve menu to your home and the Grace has even created a New Year's brunch box for the day after.

A fine tip for relaxed Christmas shopping: at the Christmas Design Shop in Roee's fashion studio, the focus will be on local design with sustainability until 23 December. In addition to the chic and refined designs of the owner, you can find Yaga’s leather accessories. Hazzenbearts offers urban designer bags: easy-to-use look without chi-chi, clear colours and shapes. The practical purses by Sanbag can almost be considered fashionable high-tech: they feel like paper but are waterproof and recyclable thanks to a special fleece material.

Christmas Cookies
Cookie monsters with an eye for detail take note: the Christmas biscuits from Cakesie are the delicious eye-catcher among seasonal candy. The fresh gingerbread is baked in the shape of sweet figures and lovingly decorated by hand with colourful icing: decorated Christmas trees, penguins with fairy lights or Christkind with goldilocks. You can only get them from today to Saturday at the rather spontaneously organised X-Mas pop-up in the Nordbahnviertel. Almost too pretty to eat, but also too delicious not to. You can also find wines, fashion and lamps there.

„What A Year” at designforum
What a year! You can definitely say that again about 2020, which is why the Joseph Binder Award has also made the saying its motto. The international competition honours particularly innovative graphic design and illustrations. Among a record number of 1029 entries from 46 countries, the jury awarded 6 gold, 18 silver and 7 bronze. The exhibition of the same name at the designforum currently shows all nominated entries and winning projects, some of them from the local scene. Austria won gold with the design “Altes Hallenbad”, followed by the ethnic design “The Legends” from Poland.

Corona’s Ancestors
It's nothing new, really. For the people of Europe, the Corona pandemic is a phenomenonas unfathomable as it is unexpected – but that’s because we have forgotten that our ancestors had to live with the fear of epidemics for centuries. Plague, smallpox, cholera and Spanish flu shaped life. And it's all about epidemics and masks at the Viennese court from 1500 to 1918 in the exhibition at Wagenburg, which starts today. On display are carnival masks, documents on the cholera canal, the history of vaccination – and the almost unbelievable mourning robes of Empress Sisi.

With a pop-up market, artist Andreas Franke has gathered the whole family in his gallery: He himself, both daughters and their aunt present their paintings, beautiful handicrafts and fine decoration. The young ladies offer affordable prints and originals of modern line art, photography and intense blue prints. The motifs also turn into beautiful stationery and can be worn on printed T-shirts. The “Pillow Therapy” pillows are embroidered by Aunt Susanne Klobassa with Sigmund Freud, who promises: You can tell me everything. Original gifts!

Oh, these colours! If pastel and sea-coloured tableware has you in raptures, you're in for a treat: the ceramic paradise in Neubaugasse is selling its products in the cheerful and beautiful design for 30% less these days during a sale. The beautiful ceramics from Motel a Miio are produced in a fair, humane and environmentally friendly way in Portugal, and everything is hand-picked and hand-painted. The pottery label is actually famous for its bowls, cups, vases and plates glazed with great colour gradients – but recently they have also started to focus on colour blocking. Vases in pink and yellow are so cheerful!

Porcelain Pop-up
In less unusual times, porcelain painter Brigitte Riedl would be standing in her stall at the Advent market in front of Schönbrunn Palace today. Since there is none this year, she has come up with an alternative and, without further ado, rented an entire shop. For a short time only, she sells fine porcelain that she paints with loving motifs. Ladybirds, caterpillars and bees cavort on cups, and for a tumble-free slide into a happy new year, there are cute little lucky pigs with real gold snouts. And what's not missing either: pendants and tableware in a Christmas look.

Stretch and Shape
Moving the body freely without it pinching and twisting: this is not a pipe dream but an achievable goal. Trained dancer Brigitte Rosas shows the path to this goal in her Zoom workshop this afternoon where she will be stretching and straining. To train strength, endurance and flexibility, she demonstrates selected exercises set to pleasant music – the effect: tensions are gently released, elasticity is improved and muscles in the abdomen, legs and buttocks are strengthened. Afterwards, you will even be able reach your toes with your fingers again ;-)

Your eardrums are caressed today with jazz-inspired blues and a velvety voice. Serbian Maja Jakupovic, who has chosen to live in Austria, has been successfully climbing towards the soul summit with her breathy ballads and powerful lyrics for several years now (listen in here). The singer will give a live performance this evening in the empty “Porgy & Bess”, and the show can be experienced via a free stream – but donations are also possible. At 20:00 a link will appear on the club's homepage, and clicking on “Now Live” will open the video platform Vimeo. The show must go on(line)!

Every household has one: the one big bag in which all the shopping bags are collected and which – like a magic trick – just never seems to become any emptier. Today's virtual crafting workshop will finally decimate the shopping bag stock! And in a meaningful way, too, because for Christmas, old paper bags will be transformed into decorative gift wrappings under Zoom's guidance. Stickers, glitter, motif paper and any other decorative material you have at home will be used. It's not only perfect upcycling, but it’s also beautiful.

Having an original photo of screen goddess Audrey Hepburn hanging in your own four walls – sure would be pretty damn cool. Galerie OstLicht has selected such special specimens for its Vintage Market. Film legends and Hollywood icons pose on original prints from the 1940s to the 1990s: Swinging Sixties model Twiggy, tragic screen star James Dean, Brigitte Bardot or Sophia Loren. Scene photos show fashion shootings of big fashion houses or the fighter Muhammad Ali in the boxing ring. Pure nostalgia for browsing, discovering and buying.

Singing with the WDR Choir
A little vocal practice before the family singing around the Christmas tree certainly can't hurt. An extra nice way to practise comes today from Cologne via the internet: to get in the perfect mood, you can sing along to six songs on the live concert stream of the Cologne Philharmonic Orchestra, with chorales by Bach from the Christmas Oratorio on the programme. To ensure that the audience sings along loudly under the guidance of the conductor, the sheet music and lyrics can be downloaded in advance. And if you just want to listen you can get comfy and enjoy.

Winter Solstice: 108 Sun Salutations
Yippee! We have put the darkest part of 2020 behind us, today is the winter solstice. Even if you won't notice it right away: the days are getting brighter again and the nights shorter. Almost hard to believe but there were some actual stage premieres at the Vienna State Opera in 2020 despite the lockdown. One of the most thrilling is the new production of the opera “Das verratene Meer”: it’s a psychological thriller about betrayed love, brutality and generational conflicts, grippingly performed by a giant orchestra and accompanied by hugely dramatic music. If you missed it, you can look forward to tonight – the premiere was recorded at the State Opera without an audience and can be watched from the comfort of your home today. The stream is completely free and available for 24 hours after registration.

Who else knows people who you can’t find presents for because they already have everything? Then this is the right Christmas market: in the Fortuna Gallery you can get hold of unusual and unusually beautiful things, fairly traded, from all over the world. The selection reads like something out of the Arabian Nights: imaginative quilts from the street of tent makers in Cairo, wild animal sculptures made from recycled flip-flops from Nairobi, funky jumping jacks from Bangkok, original tin angels from Dakar. The Great Palm House
No matter how cold or perpetually grey Vienna usually presents itself around Christmas, there is one place where it is cosily warm and mood-liftingly green. The Great Palm House at Schönbrunn has been home to beautiful plants from all over the world since 1882 – and is also a magnificent piece of architecture. With over 40,000 panes of glass! In its three houses, the warm house, the temperate house and the cold house (yeah, okay, that's not cosy and warm), selected plants from the botanical collection grow happily away. And the green paradise is open every day, even on public holidays!

The Snow Globe Manufactory
As it’s often the case with inventions, the manufacturer of surgical instruments Erwin Perzy came across the decorative shaking glass globe with snowing effect by pure coincidence (he actually wanted to increase the light output of the carbon filament light). Since then, the nostalgic wonder globes from Vienna with Christmas tree-, animal- or Ferris wheel content travel all around the world. Many of the splendid kitsch-objects can be admired at the snow globe museum and the shop. Daily until today – it’s totally possible that you might find another new favourite good-mood-souvenir there ;-)

Your favourite people will get extra beautiful Christmas greetings this year. The spacious and bright shop “La Papeteria” on Margaretenplatz has plenty of space for fine cards made of handmade paper, printed with festive motifs. Most of them are designed by shop manager and graphic designer Dorothee Bauer herself, in many different styles: there's a snowy fir grove in watercolour, romantic wreath prints and Rudolf the reindeer as a cute comic figure. Special tip: On 18 and 19 December, a calligrapher is at the shop and will write personal messages on the cards.

Royi’s Creperie
This man has been getting around. He learned in New York, worked for celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay in London, then opened a crepes venue in Israel. But now Royi Shwarz has arrived in Vienna – and he has brought his creperie from Tel Aviv with him. Quite brave to open a restaurant in the middle of a pandemic! But if you can make crepes like this, you can survive lockdowns. Royi fills his giant sourdough pancakes with unusual ingredients: Artichoke hearts with burrata, mushrooms with nut pesto and baked tomatoes or homemade chocolate. Top-notch!
