"Heya Girls!"
“Death must be Viennese”: Georg Kreisler already knew that the Viennese have a special relationship with death. But this week, for the first time, the Grim Reaper will get his own festival. The festival “Memento Mori”, which approaches the topic sometimes seriously, sometimes artistically and playfully, offers an opulent programme with more than 50 events in 11 days: lectures such as the one by Danielle Spera on mourning rituals in Judaism, workshops, concerts, readings (for example by Marlene Streeruwitz), films, theatre performances (“Der Leichenverbrenner” at the Burgtheater!), walks to cemeteries and Schubert's death place and guided tours through museums are on the programme. At the festival headquarters, the Volkskundemuseum, you can see 101 Embroidered Handkerchiefs of Tears or discover personal mementos of people from Vienna, Berlin and Zurich at the installation “The Consolation of Things”. The Young Widowers Dinner Club hosts a Living Book evening and Lisa Schmid performs from her programme “Ehrengrab” in the Late Night Cabaret. Dense programme!

Wishing you a tranquil week,

Urbanize Festival
The city festival for urban explorations has made camp at Nordbahnhof this year. For 4 days, modern urban planning and optimistic visions of the future meet there. At the Fix the System, Not the Women! workshop, you can find out how to stay big in business without competitive pressure and profit maximisation. The exhibition Perceptual Grounds, on the other hand, commemorates the fishy victims of the Nordbahnhof building. Whether you’ll celebrate feminist protest culture with guerrilla dance moves or discuss free spaces in the city – Urbanize has a lot to offer!

Archive Sale: Anna Aichinger
Anna Aichinger was once one of the brightest stars on the Austrian fashion horizon. In 2006, the Viennese designer's very first collection made it to the Paris Fashion Week. From then on, Aichinger was an international household name. Until she abruptly stopped designing clothes in 2012. Sad for fashion lovers, but here comes the good news: almost 10 years later, Anna Aichinger is selling her former winter collections from the archive – from elegant dresses to cool accessories – at a low price in the boutique Nachbarin. If you're lucky, the designer will advise you personally!

Vienna Pain Day
Oh dear, oh dear. Yes, Austrians love to complain and are masters at exaggerating minor aches. But today it's all about real pain, or rather how to get it under control. At the Vienna Pain Day in the Rathaus there are lectures, health stations and sound counselling on many acute and chronic ailments – from migraine and shoulder problems to rheumatism and mental stress. The topics range from new therapeutic approaches to complementary options. Experts give lectures and will answer personal questions directly after each lecture.

Dalli Dalli
Political satire meets Kasperl theatre: Austria's domestic politics of the past year and a half provide more than enough material. Six actors play through a condensed version of the events, debate what truth even means and which of them is actually the most important. At the beginning, they play their roles as Kasperl characters (including the crocodile), but the more difficult it becomes to keep the play going, the more the facades begin to crumble. Political parallels are easy to draw. Lines too. The motto: “Merrily into decline”.

Vienna Autumn Days
From apples and pears to lesser-known wild fruit and chilli peppers – autumn offers a colourful variety, harvest-wise. The Autumn Days at Burggarten organised by the Bundesgärten and the Gartenbau-Gesellschaft are all about enjoying autumnal fruits this year. You can get to know exotic plants such as persimmons or mini kiwis, shop for fine saffron, poppy or chokeberry products, marvel at plants from the Bundesgärten and stock up on flower bulbs or fruit tree rarities. And gardeners can get valuable tips and have their fruit varieties identified.

Elina Duni & Rob Luft: Lost Ships
Jazz guitar, piano and Elina Duni's delicate voice can be heard in the Konzerthaus today. The Albanian-Swiss singer sensitively reinterprets traditional Albanian folk songs. But Duni also sings about the problems of our time, about shipwrecks in the Mediterranean and rampant nationalism. Her musical partner Rob Luft is one of the most talented guitarists of the contemporary jazz scene in Great Britain. Together they composed quiet, haunting songs of love and exile. On tour they are accompanied by British jazz pianist Fred Thomas. So beautiful!

Graffiti workshop
How often have we walked past the artistic graffiti at the Danube Canal and asked ourselves: How on earth did they manage to do that? Today you can learn how – from the master himself! French graffiti artist Manuel Murel demonstrates various spray techniques and explains the basics of mural art. Then – do it yourself! – it's our turn. Freestyle, meaning without a stencil, and for the time being only on cardboard, you can give free rein to your creativity. And who knows, maybe a few freshly graduated graffiti artists will soon populate the Danube Canal ;-)

The 80s. The Art of the 80s
Since CitySpotterGirl spent most of the 1980s in the discos of this world, at vernissages or at obscure artistic backyard events, this is her favourite tip of the week ;-) Because looking back it's clear: the 1980s with their crazy style pluralism are the most important decade for the art of our time – Jeff Koons discovers kitsch, Cindy Sherman photographs exclusively herself, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring advance to the epitome of non-conformist art. As of today, the “Albertina modern” is showing art that wants to overwhelm! Ah, the good old days...

Vienna Coffee Festival
Anyone can make coffee? Far from it, say coffee aficionados. And they have organised a weekend where you can devote yourself entirely to the black gold! Today at the Ottakringer brewery, for instance, you can sample exciting varieties from small, local roasting companies such as Röstwerkstatt or Süssmund Kaffee. You can also experiment with different brewing methods, chat about anything and the bean or serve creative coffee cocktails. Fringe events: many live concerts, food trucks and a barista challenge with prize money to be won. A real spectacle!

My Happy Monday
Shaking off everyday life, breathing in music and becoming more flexible with simple exercises – that sounds tempting. Especially when the neck is being relaxed and the spine, pelvis and muscles are being strengthened. There is also dancing, and at the end, Qigong teacher Karin Torky-Martin lets the nervous system run down with still and moving Qigong exercises. Conveniently, this relaxing class will take place online every Monday, so you can join in from anywhere! Until your mind relaxes and a feeling of being settled within yourself will arise ;-)

Please Madame
Four guys found a band and try to be successful with their music. Quite an old story, with a few exceptions it usually remains an attempt. But the Austrian band “Please Madame” is one of these few exceptions! The four guys from Salzburg make melodic indie rock that sounds like it comes fresh from a small British town by the sea. The quartet came up with their third studio album in their grandmother's garden shed and in Alpine huts. They sing about love and heartbreak, but also about everyday worries and emancipation. They are playing at the WUK today, you can listen in here!

Crime Novel Night
Lots of legal assassinating and murdering is happening again in Vienna tonight – only in the literary sense, of course. Almost 40 “grandmasters of horror” participate in the legendary Crime Novel Night to read from their current novels. Crime scenes can be found at various cafés, but also at Zentralfriedhof or on a ship. For example, the wonderful Alex Beer takes care of mummified corpses on the MS Wien, Maria Publig goes on the trail of “Waldviertelblut” at Café Mocca and at Café Korb, Kurt Palm offers listeners a taste of his next project “Böses Erwachen”. Kitchen Date
The way to someone’s heart is through their stomach! TCM chef Sabine Dobesberger knows that. The head of the Viennese cooking studio “Die Pause” conjures relationship happiness out of the cooking pot: her new book “Kitchen Date” is a mix of relationship guide and TCM cooking school. It contains kitchen aphrodisiacs as well as recipes balancing yin and yang – like fennel and chard risotto with oranges or fruity fish stew. By the way, those who cook together with their loved one are said to be more satisfied with their relationship and have more sex! Presentation at Thalia today – plus tasting.

Schubert Gallery
Opening an art gallery while pregnant – now this definitely takes a lot of guts! The young Viennese artist Carina Schubert dares to take the leap. Schubert paints colourful, eye-catching pictures, sometimes abstract, sometimes with a concrete motif. An old workshop of the family business Schubert Stone serves her as a studio and from now on as a sales gallery as well. Schubert has completed training in business management, studio art and as a dance educator. With a baby on the way, she has now chosen her passion, painting, despite all the uncertainties. Cool!

Die Wohnung
Mid-century lovers will be delighted! The vintage boutique Die Wohnung sells old pieces of furniture, from golden bar carts to wildly patterned fauteuils. Owner Vanessa Vehovec lovingly picks out everything herself. She has been in the business for a long time, but only recently moved to the 5th district with bag and baggage. Her vintage treasures are often from the 1950s and 1960s, but you can also find perfectly shaped wooden chairs from the turn of the century and brightly coloured 70s lamps. They're not exactly bargains, though, but they are stylish pieces for a beautiful home.

Cafe Bellaria
The Bellaria, opened in 1870, is the oldest coffee house still operating in Vienna. But you wouldn't know it by looking at the old lady – she has just been extensively renovated and beamed into the 21st century. The floor, for example, was cast from concrete, but the old dome and stucco have been beautifully restored. Open daily from early morning to late at night, the breakfast menu – from Eggs Royal to Passion Fruit Porridge – is huge, the steak frites at lunch is excellent and great drinks are served in the evening. It looks chic and is suitable for every situation: this is how to coffee house today!
