"Heya Girls!"
Can you hear it too? The gardeners among us are already champing on the bit. Soon it will be time to get back to digging in, digging up, despairing and delighting. However, this has become old-fashioned by now. Because we can safely dispose of the Ice Saints and all the rules around them in the organic waste bin – anyone who waits until May has already missed out on the first harvest season of the year. 4-season gardening is the order of the day. And interestingly enough, this has little to do with climate change but a lot to do with modern gardening knowledge. Beds and balcony boxes can be planted with edible plants all year round, you just have to know the right robust varieties. Like the experts on modern gardening at the City Farm in Augarten. They are already heading into the vegetable spring and organise an organic spring plant market every Friday and Saturday in March. Garden lettuces, chard, broccoli, kohlrabi, fennel, spinach, peas, radishes – they can all withstand the cold and are already allowed out. We don't want to lose any time, after all ;-)

Wishing you a green week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

KHM: What we have to hide
The expression “round the back” takes on a whole new meaning here ;-) Secret messages on the back of paintings are usually only seen in films, but in fact there are hidden symbols and images on many pieces in the Kunsthistorisches Museum. The Zoom lecture today shows what is usually not visible – and tells the stories behind it. One curious riddle was even deciphered only recently: The painting by a goldsmith shows a satyr on the back wall handing a medallion to a naked woman. It is a symbol of love for sale – and that the blacksmith was probably a customer himself ;-)

 Simone Rocha
Simone Rocha x H&M
Shoo, shoo, ladies! You'll have to be quite quick now because the rush is likely enormous: as of today, H&M is offering fashion by Irish designer Simone Rocha online. Among fashion insiders, the Irish designer is considered one of the biggest stars. Playfulness meets urban chic and sustainability meets coolness. For the first time, Rocha has designed fashion not only for women but for the whole family – the collection comprises a total of 37 pieces. And the dresses in particular are simply stunning! Playful, funny, nostalgic, yet elegant. But as mentioned: everything is only available online.

Pioneers of Change: Jane Goodall
If you haven't heard this woman yet, you are missing out! The famous chimpanzee researcher Dr Jane Goodall is a terrific speaker and brilliant campaigner for the environment, her lectures are usually sold out immediately. The online kick-off of the 5th “Pioneers of Change” is the chance to hear Goodall speak for free – all lectures are available for 48 hours after registration. Today, Goodall will speak about the apparent separation of humans from nature. Which results in ecological, social and economic crises – for which, however, there are already visionary ideas for solutions.

Pop-up: Hunger auf Cha·rak·ter
Spring is in season! Which means that the fashion label Cha-rak-ter couture and the sustainable grocery shop Obsthunger from Elisabethplatz-Markt are opening a smart pop-up store. In the future, they’ll offer fashion, culinary treats and handicrafts from the neighbourhood every Thursday to Saturday: Uhudler spritzer to go, jewellery and stationery, like postcards by Karo Oh, showing women in all colours and shapes, a wonderful reminder for more self-love. And snazzy lighting material: upcycled lamps made from vintage bottles and wildly patterned shades by OH Interior Design.

Zoology by Stefan Olah
There are places to which us commoners usually have no access. These include the depots of museums, which only very few people are allowed to enter. Architectural photographer Stefan Olah was privileged to roam the zoological collections of the University of Vienna for his new photo series. Starting today, the “rauminhalt” gallery offers an exclusive view of the exhibits: specimens peep through plastic covers with their glass eyes, and Olah zooms deep into historical wall chart collections. The photographs are also a kind of farewell: the collections will soon leave the rooms forever.

(R)Evolution
Today we have premiere fever and luckily you don't need a vaccination for that ;-) Since the theatres are still closed, the premiere of “(R)Evolution” will be streamed as a video. The science fiction play is set in the year 2040, when a couple wants to bring the perfect baby into the world. The offspring is crafted on the computer: the unborn child must be competitive, immune to cancer and resistant to climate catastrophes. Tips on reproduction are given by the artificial intelligence “Alecto”, keyword cybersex. Survival in the 21st century – a witty and wicked spectacle.

Hundertwasser worldwide
Discoveries that did not exist in this form before Corona: In online tours, Austrian tour guide Sandra Blum leads visitors to sights that would be much too far apart for a real walk. Her world tour of Friedensreich Hundertwasser's architecture is done via online meeting on “Jitsi”, the buildings are shown as a slideshow. From German breweries and Californian farms you travel to the “MOP” incinerator plant in Osaka, Japan. A toilet break is taken in New Zealand, where there is a public loo designed by Hundertwasser – a very stylish smallest room ;-)

Verzippt & Zugenäht
A must-have from the 1990s celebrates its revival on trendy heads with messy buns: scrunchies, colourful hair ties made of fabric, are back! Only now the hairstyle gets a very special update: a small pocket with a zip is hidden in the fabric to accommodate money, keys or other small items. 8 young people from a junior company came up with this idea. The pigtail trend is now on sale in their pop-up shop: The scrunchies are made of recycled fabrics from velvet to silk and are available in leopard print, polka dots and many patterns. Close the bag – raise your hair!

Body of Knowledge – At Home
Corona has also left its mark on the “imagetanz Festival”. But: it will take place! The programme has been specially modified for the virtual space, is experimental and surprisingly interactive despite digitalisation: in the piece “Body of Knowledge” by the Australian artist Samara Hersch, you participate from home via Zoom, while at the same time talking to Australian teenagers via WhatsApp about shame, death and the future of the planet. The connection between the audience and the teenagers creates a performance about the big and small questions of life.

Re-Opened: Jewish Museum Judenplatz
After a renovation, the Jewish Museum on Judenplatz looks tiptop again! The renovations were made for the new highlight of the building, the exhibition “Our Medieval City! The First Jewish Community in Vienna”. The remains of one of the most important medieval synagogues will once again tell of the time 600 years ago: Two dice suggest illegal goings-on, since gambling was illegal according to old traditions. What might the rabbinical sanctions have been? Other objects and letters bear witness to the fruitful life, but also to the tragic end of the community.

 Fenster Café
Window Cafe
It is the first of its kind in Vienna and consists of only one window frame: In a small side street off Fleischmarkt, the Fenster Cafe is hidden in a 600-year-old house – there is only room for one barista inside. A great treat is passed through the window – the “Cornettoccino”: freshly brewed coffee served in a thick cone, which is coated with chocolate on the inside. The little window has already had to cope over a thousand coffee junkies because it is so popular. No wonder! It tastes great and apparently manages to sweeten the day of the grumpy Viennese ;-)

Ethel Merhuat: Sweet & Bitter
A single voice with so many facets! The young Ethel Merhaut comes from operetta singing, but vocally there are no limits for her: She masters everything from French chanson to Yiddish tango to Viennese song. At today's live concert, you can get an exclusive impression of how this sounds on her soon-to-be-released solo album “Süss & Bitter”. The jazz quartet sets the pace for foxtrot, waltz, film music and tangos of the 1920s and 30s. Merhaut sings longing songs and frivolous lyrics to timeless melodies, sometimes whispered and sometimes assertively on point.

3 famous ladies and their gardens
One is considered one of the most beautiful gardens in England – that of Vita Sackville-West in Sissinghurst, the other – the garden of Virginia Woolf – is such an inspiring place as you rarely find. Add to this the green idyll of Lady Ottoline Morrell – and there you have it, a little journey to three fascinating British ladies of the 20th century and their famous gardens. The Garden Museum in London is streaming a lecture by scientist Claudia Tobin (in English) today. With photos and paintings, letters and literature, she brings the oases and their influence on art to life.

Garden of Empowerment
International Women's Day is over, but the campaign against violence against women and girls is far from it! As part of One Billion Rising, the Garden of Empowerment project now offers online courses lasting several weeks – all free. In “Write Your Song”, you strengthen your voice and learn to raise it: From today, lyrics, melody, harmonies and rhythm are practised every Wednesday with performer Maren Rahmann via Zoom. This helps deal with fears or traumas in a creative way and is a step towards more self-empowerment. There is also a dance course and a climate protection course.

Designing a mood board
She’d move in here if she could: The Cooper Hewitt Design Museum in New York is CitySpotterGirl's absolute favourite museum. A series of workshops called “Design Snacks” was created there especially for the internet, including a course on designing mood boards (for free!). These are more than just pretty collages: creative minds visualise their inspiration for everything from websites and books to interior decoration on them. Today, hip fashion designer Lesley Ware shows how this works via Zoom – and provides training in design, innovative tools and personal style.

Claudia Rossbacher: Steirertanz
Again and again the book has fallen victim to the villain Corona. Several times Claudia Rossbacher has rewritten the latest volume of her successful Styrian crime novels and adapted it to the pandemic reality. For her crime novels have a real-life connection, now “Steirertanz” is set in a future after Corona – because it will certainly come. Today she presents the latest murder case for Thalia in a live stream on Facebook: at Grundlsee in Ausseerland, a villa burned to the ground, killing the owner of a traditional costume factory. The trail leads all the way to the “Steirerball” in Vienna.

super.
Always make a pilgrimage to the city centre for cool design? No longer necessary thanks to the boutique “Super. Vienna!” in Hietzing: outside a pretty, old storefront, the interior is all clean in white and rose gold. Fashion, jewellery and natural cosmetics are more expensive than in the usual concept store, but even more carefully selected: only here can you find gold-plated jewellery by the London label “Alighieri” and the fashion line by “The Colorful Crew”. This is wearable paper art on hoodies with positive messages in cheerfully colourful letters. “Super” itself offers tennis socks, home-wear and a few small labels from France.

Ois.in.an
Of course this is first and foremost about food. But there is a lot more to the vegetarian-vegan restaurant. Ois.in.an is a “social business”, the proceeds go to the Free Girls Movement association founded by the operators, which mainly cares for refugee girls. So it's a great project – and the food here is also made with a lot of love. Because of Corona, there is only take-away at the moment. Until lunchtime, you are spoiled with well-filled brunch boxes, in the evening there are two dinner boxes, hearty or in the gourmet version with mushroom ragout in red wine and chocolate tartelettes. They need to be supported!
