"Heya Girls!"
Alright, so I actually read up on this. Valentine’s Day is not an invention by the florists guild, it was already celebrated in the 14thcentury. And they definitely didn’t have a Chamber of Commerce back then. But apparently lots of lovestruck people. In Vienna, too, there are tons of opportunities for some hefty romanticising this week. The Leopold Museum serves a love potion in the evening and couples who whisper “Liebesrausch” only pay half. At Prater, things get cute: getting kissed and creeped out at the haunted castle. At the Natural History Museum, you can explore eroticism in the Stone Age and the Iron Age. Singles can solve riddles at “First Escape” and meet new people there – a different kind of blind dating. The Bakery in the Hotel Daniel serves a particularly nice special menu on the 14th, if you prefer things classier, you can have star-chef Silvio Nickol cook for you romantic deluxe-style at Palais Coburg, or enjoy a delicious 6-course-menu with candlelight and piano music on the first floor of the former Prince’s palace. And if you can’t stand all of this, you had best escape to the Anti-Valentine’s Party at the lifestyle hotel SO/ Vienna. Aside from drinks like “Tinder Me” and party mood, you can give vent to your feelings in the “Hate My Ex Corner” with voodoo dolls and punchbag!

Wishing you a romantic week,

One Billion Rising
In January alone, six women were already murdered in Austria, and one in three women globally is beaten or raped over the course of her life. In order to take a stand in a visible manner, American feminist Eve Ensler has declared Valentine’s Day V-Day. For years, women have been taking to the streets on 14 February to dance together for a non-violent life using the motto “One Billion Rising”. Vienna will join in too! At 17:00, they will be dancing on Mariahilfer Straße to “Break the Chain”, afterwards it’s on to the Thursday demonstration and then the after-party at ega!

Trash_design Sale
Pretty cool, all the stuff you can make from electronic waste! Jobseekers use waste disposal site finds to produce products from jewellery to kitchen accessories using the label “trash_design”. Until the end of February, supporting the socio-economic business and its sustainability intentions with shopping is practically a must – for they offer a discount of 30% on all trash_design products at the field store. Like on bracelets from colourful wires or bowls from a washing machine’s bull eye. Which withstand 200° and can even be used for baking lasagne!

Flying High: Women Artists of Art Brut
The first comprehensive exhibition that is exclusively dedicated to female Art Brut from 1860 to today! For decades, the exclusively male discoverers and propagandists of the genre – psychiatrists and artists – have addressed the work of creative women patients in a way that can only be described as a process of elimination. The show opening today presents 316 works by 93 women artists from 21 countries. Works that go beyond our idea of art – from shrill colour worlds and fantastic creatures to incredible pieces of handicrafts. Vernissage is today!

Sale at artup
For 15 years, designer Linda Zlok has sold “Austrian Design in the City” in her store with gallery-feeling. Unfortunately, she quits now and whether the shop at Bauernmarkt will remain is subject of negotiations right now. In any case, there’s a hefty sale going on there, at normal opening times until 22 February, and at a flea market after that. So it’s a great opportunity to stock up cheaply (discount of up to 50%!), on designer fashion of the usually rather high-end variety like cheerfully colourful stuff by “Gemini Universe”, avantgarde items by “Ruins of Modernity”, or a gorgeous evening gown by Edith A’Gay.

Lee MacDougall
Kind of a cool guy and he also sings well: during the last few years, Brit Lee MacDougall travelled around the entire world with a battered guitar on his back. The singer/songwriter played music everywhere from Alabama to Aachen and performed in sold-out concerts at famous venues such as the Hotel Café in Los Angeles. He has even shared the stage with Ed Sheeran once. Tonight at Haus der Musik, he presents songs from his debut album “Busk Till Dawn”, a second album is currently in the making. Fine guitar-heavy Brit pop, inspired by the Beatles and the Kinks. Listen in here!

Heal Your Heart-Seminar
When we get offended, overreact, or hold back our feelings, it often has to do with an injury suffered in the past. Better protect the heart instead of suffering heartbreak ;-) In place of these avoidance strategies, though, you could also tackle the issue in a serious manner: today’s 1-day-seminar by Eva Buttazzoni and Renata Proske is about healing your heart. They show how to connect head and heart in order to listen to the voice of your heart, how to find hindering blockages or even erase them, and how to free yourself from the burdensome energies of other people.

 Imperial Renaissance Hotel
Franz Brunch
For breakfast princesses: today (and every Sunday from now on), the Imperial Riding School Renaissance Vienna Hotel is hosting an Imperial “Franz Brunch” in their lobby. Behind the idea is the hotel’s interesting history: the neo-classical building was bought in 1802 by Emperor Franz Joseph I., in 1850 today’s lobby was turned into the Imperial riding hall for the military riding school. Afterwards, the lobby was reconstructed and served as EOS cinema as well as a garage for post buses. Now, it’s a place for gourmandising emperor-style – with live jazz, “Sisi”-Bellini, a sumptuous buffet and heavenly desserts.

Haley Johnsen
She is rather unknown in these parts here, but in the USA, Haley Johnsen has already had a taste of celebrity life when she participated in the TV-show “American Idol”. Today, the American can be heard live in Vienna for the first time, in tow she brings the first songs of her new album. Nice, catchy ballads in blues-rock style sung with a soft but powerful voice, at times with a nostalgic arrangement. Haley Johnsen was born in Oregon and grew up influenced by pop, classical music, rock, country and gospel. You can listen in here.

Fascinating insights into the domestic architecture scene: Ringturm currently shows the prettiest houses in Austria – including all 22 nominated projects of the shortlist, apart from the Builder-Owner Award winners 2018. Among the six winners are very diverse projects like three minimalist Carinthian (log) houses in the middle of the forest, the “Wunderkammer des Brotes” (housing the Bread Museum “Paneum”) in Upper Austria built by Coop Himmelb(l)au, or a Volksschule in Vorarlberg for which a 1980s building was converted. Everybody can draw!
As long as primary school children get bad grades in “Art Education” for not colouring properly or for doodling unconventionally, there will probably always be adults who think they can’t draw. Nonsense! Three course-evenings at “Sous-Bois” now encourage you to believe in your own drawing abilities. Because everybody has their own graphic script that is to be discovered. First you draw blind, with your left hand, or while listening to music – free and without model. Afterwards, you may venture on the drawing of items and room situations using different techniques.

Outdoor-Training with Sepp Resnik
Well, this doesn’t exactly sound like a gentle work-out but it’s certainly effective ;-) Extreme athlete and triathlete Sepp Resnik has cycled around the world several times, was part of the national team military pentathlon and has also tortured our tennis star Dominic Thiem fitness-wise. Now, the Vienna Marriott managed to win him for a weekly training session, where non-hotel guests can participate as well. Your fitness level doesn’t matter, coach Resnik looks at everyone individually. The training takes places in the Stadtpark, afterwards you can enjoy some wellness at the Marriott for 2 hours.

The Sinatra Sisters
Attention, fake news ;-) Frank Sinatra had to very gifted sisters that always used to be in his shadow. And of course these sisters have angelic singing voices. Singer Susanne Marik and (male!) singer Joy Peters slip into the roles of the “Sinatra Sisters”. The Budims
The Budims are called Magdalena and Markus, are both 28 years young, happily married – and they dig jeans! So after gaining some experience in the textile business, it made sense for them to open their own denim store. It is situated at Raimundhof on MaHü and only has three brands (for a start) in the shelves stuffed with jeans up to the ceiling, but enough different models for every figure and leg lengths. And all of them, G-Star, Kings Of Indigo as well as Denham value sustainability. They also plan to have a repair- and upcycling corner so that your favourite jeans may live as long as possible and stay trendy. Winsome!

 Hotel Sacher
Salon Sacher
Everyone knows the Sacher anyway, at least the long queues of Asians that patiently wait in front of the hotel hoping for seats in the café. Now, Salon Sacher was opened recently to the left of the hotel entrance – smaller, more intimate and not at all furnished in the usual Sacher-plush style. In fact, the style takes some getting used to, it’s based on the 20s in France, accompanied by a historic stucco ceiling that was found in the course of the renovation. But it’s definitely unusual! The cakes are delicious, the snacks from sandwich to goose liver mousse are exquisite. I think we shouldn’t surrender the Salon to the Asians ;-)
