"Heya Girls!"
What sounds like pious hope nowadays was once the motto of a brilliant Viennese: “Progress through beauty” proclaimed Josef Hoffmann. The architect, designer and co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte is often seen as the master builder of the rich, back in the Golden Twenties. Which is not true, as a magnificent exhibition at the MAK has been showing since this week. Hoffmann survived five different political systems, including monarchy and fascism. He created luxury villas such as the Palais Stoclet in Brussels as well as Viennese social buildings and firmly believed that beauty, even in the simplest of everyday life, can bring people forward. In the largest retrospective to date, the MAK is now showing Hoffmann's enormous life's work with more than 1,000 (!) exhibits, which encompasses all aspects of everyday life. And since the exhibition had to be postponed for a year because of Corona, it was also possible to do research for a year longer. With exciting results – for the first time, Hoffmann's relationship to National Socialism has been examined. Definitely check it out!

Wishing you a beautiful week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Dust & Silk
Ikat weavings made of silk, tea and “wild apples” once reached Europe on the myth-enshrouded historical trade routes that Marco Polo travelled. But so did religions, knowledge and diseases. And the current exhibition at the Weltmuseum is about this old “Silk Road” as well as the new one. Its complexity is fascinating: Here is an Iranian water pipe from 1500, and over there is a photo of a new highway in the Gobi Desert. The exhibition shows over 200 historical exhibits juxtaposed with pieces of contemporary art. What a huge web of movements between Asia and Europe!

Then this is the right Christmas market: at Galerie Fortuna you can snatch unusual and unusually beautiful things, fairly traded, from all over the world. The winter blues doesn’t stand a chance. Until 24.12., you can shop here!

50 Years of Humanity
Doctors Without Borders celebrate their birthday! The humanitarian aid organisation was founded on 21 December 1971 and awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999. Burgtheater honorary members and acting veterans Klaus Maria Brandauer and Elisabeth Orth lend their voices to those who would no longer be alive without the organisation's help. Cabaret artist Dirk Stermann offers arguments against those who draw the borders too tightly. President Alexander van der Bellen will also join the celebration. Important!

 Michela Ghisetti
Michela Ghisetti
Into the new year with a retrospective: the Albertina is dedicating a major exhibition to the Italian artist Michela Ghisetti, who is far too little known in our country. Her omnipresent theme: social roles. Ghisetti's art is contradictory – at times she draws almost lifelike portraits of women, at other times she creates abstract paintings full of colourful dots. Particularly enchanting: her latest series of works consists of ten dolls, each with its own character. Ghisetti's art is always about social cohesion in our society. And we could really use some of that right now...

The Little Prince
“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye.” Antoine de Saint Exupéry's philosophical story of the Little Prince is simply always amazing. Today it is retold on stage in the Sonnwendviertel! A pilot has to make an emergency landing in the Sahara and meets a prince from another planet. With Rita Luksch, a woman takes on the role of the boy who learns about love, responsibility and uniqueness on earth. The story is accompanied by spherical sounds and a violist

 Phoebe Violet
Phoebe Violet
Latin Chamber Pop – that's what Phoebe Violet calls her music. Originally from Costa Rica, she plays the violin and sings. Her dramatic stage presence is reminiscent of a theatre performance – in a good way! Phoebe Violet moved to Linz with her family when she was still a teenager; she has been making music since the age of three. Her Spanish lyrics are about realising dreams, preferably without naivety. Her compositions are dramatic without being exaggerated – on stage she is supported by a violinist, a cellist and a bassist. Today finally live (!) once again at Sargfabrik!

The Viennese Rothschilds. A thriller
The Rothschilds, Jewish bankers from Frankfurt, are among the richest families in the world. One branch of the family settled in Vienna in 1816 – and was involved in major political, economic and social conflicts from the very start. Of course, anti-Semitism also played a role. With Louis Rothschild as hostage, the Gestapo extorted the family's entire fortune in 1938. Nevertheless, the Rothschilds founded numerous educational and charitable foundations and helped persecuted co-religionists. The new exhibition at the Jewish Museum explores the legacy of the Rothschilds in Vienna.

The Big Bronski Christmas Show
It's showtime: The Bronski & Grünberg Theatre in Alsergrund is putting on a Christmas special again this year, completely in the style of the US TV shows from the 1960s. The Christmas Show is a mixture of witty parody and skilful miming of the great US stars: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin & co perform (in the Austrian version), and sometimes put their foot in their mouth! Snow cannons and tap duels, eggnog and lots of tinsel: it will be a glittering show of superlatives. Attention: naturally, the finest US English will be spoken throughout the evening ;-)

The sausage stand by Börsepark has been here for what feels like forever, but now everything is different. And that’s not just due to the fact that snack stands are a crisis-proof institution in times of lockdowns. Recently, creative cooking with a lot of heart and soul has been going on here. The bosna? It's vegan with fermented spring onions and Madras curry (the sausage comes from Hut und Stiel). Krautfleckerl also comes in a truffled version, as do the fries, and alongside delicious beef tartare, they even serve calamari fritti. Who cares about a Lockdown then.
