"Heya Girls!"
Recently, when I was at a (really exceptionally pretty, architecture-wise) spa, I felt like I was in a bad film. Instead of relaxing I had landed in selfie-hell. Everywhere, you saw beautiful people doing beautiful poses, including in the water, of course – with their phones. And I just have to say it for once: I have had it up to here with this whole taking pictures! The selfie as a way of mass hysteria, help! Photography is actually something else entirely, it’s art, emotion, documentation. There is now proof for this, with Vienna being the centre of artistic photography for four weeks. The Festivals FOTO WIEN brings more than 130 exhibitions to the city, plus talks and tours. It starts on 21 March with 34 vernissages during the opening-marathon – there’s much to see, from vintage masterpieces to young artists still to be discovered. And on the weekend, there’s a fantastic photo book market. That’s how you photo!

Wishing you a picturesque week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Haben und Brauchen in Wien
The renovation of Künstlerhaus is still on-going, but as long as they play this creatively at the interim location (a former textile factory in the 5th), we can endure it ;-) The project cycle “Haben und Brauchen in Wien” is still on until the end of June with alternating exhibitions and events. Today, there’s a double vernissage: they present the installation “A room without books is a body without soul” as well as an overall installation of 4 artists of the Hamburg Kunstverein St. Pauli. And in the afternoon, you can attend an upcycling workshop at “Jeanskamel”.

Spring Party at “wiener konfektion”
When Maria Fürnkranz-Fielhauer receives a package from Tokyo, fashionistas may safely start rejoicing. For the things that the fashion designer regularly creates from original silk kimonos of former Geishas are simply enchanting! For her new series, she has made beautiful kimono shirts and kimono dresses, which can be admired (and purchased) tonight for the first time. Aside from the presentation of the new collection, you also have the opportunity to fold origami cranes together with the Japanese lady Nobuko Akiyama and feast on a Japanese buffet.

Full Moon Watching x 2
The sky-high Donauturm is a great location for star-gazing and howling at the moon, obviously! Because of the full moon tonight, they offer a “moonlight package” – including lift ride, buffet feasting, viewing the city from above, and full moon beer. On top of that, astrologer Barbara Weninger will read the stars for the visitors, so look up the time of your birth to make sure ;-) If you prefer to break sweat, you could join the runtasia running group and use the full moon energy for a nightly run on Bisamberg.

Wundergarten introduces itself
You already know that CitySpotterGirl also creates books. The publishing house Wundergarten has been growing and thriving splendidly for some years now, all the colourful Vienna-books were joined by a few other books. Today, CitySpotterGirl alias publisher Sabine Maier steps in front of the curtain (something a spy usually never does!) and together with other Wundergarten authors presents the newest books – from the fascinating “Lexikon der Wiener Straßennamen” or the new edition of the popular “Wiener Entdeckungen” to the wonderful and important “Buch der Tage”. Brume de Mer
Intense and intoxicating: the dance piece “Brume de Mer” (“sea mist”) by Finnish choreographer Elina Pirinen is celebrating its Austria premiere today in the course of the festival Image-Tanz. The performers surrender themselves to obsessions and joys, affections and taboos, dreams, perversion and seduction, live through them and give Elina Pirinen’s aesthetic a personal and very intimate note. In an oddly scented, purple room, round-dances meet lyrical songs and a haunting organ composition that gets under your skin. So much so that the piece is only suitable for adults!

The Best of Naschmarkt
Great idea for a cooking class: getting an appetite out at the market and then arrive freshly inspired in the kitchen! Today’s special cooking workshop starts off with a 90-minute gourmandising tour at Naschmarkt, where you can chat with the vendors and get to taste some samples. Then it’s off to the cooking studio where four meals are being prepared together with professional chef Erik Pauer, for which some of the specialities tasted before will be used. It will get spicy, veggie-heavy, a little bit exotic and definitely exciting, cuisine-wise!

Sinnesrauschen
Well, that’s a lot of ringing, rushing, and pulsating in your ears! As many as four power bands provide sound deluxe in the glass-covered inner courtyard of Haus der Musik today and more than live up to the Festival’s name “Sinnesrauschen” (frenzy of the senses). It starts at 19:30 with the Californian electro-pop ladies Karmic, a whirlwind of colourful guitars, melodic synth sound and rousing 80s dance grooves. It’s followed by psychedelic pop/rock by Pressyes and finally multi-instrumentalist Bernhard Eder and happy-go-lucky-boy Onk Lou stimulate your senses. Cool!

Bread Festival Kruste&Krume
Yes, bread is and remains our everyday-hero! Slow-food ambassador Barbara van Melle recognized this and initiated the first Bread Festival of the city in 2016. Today, “Kruste&Krume” enters its 4th round and has moved from Kursalon into the (bigger) Marx Halle. 40 bakers from here and abroad demonstrate their skills, crunch-fans can stroll through deliciously smelling bread-islands, including tastings and show-kneading. Plus: sourdough swapping, Striezel weaving competition, and bread roll battles ;-) More about bread-lady Barbara van Melle’s mission here.

Funkenfest am Himmel
Such a beautiful spring ritual! In Vorarlberg, they put up large fir trees, artfully encases with wood, and burn them together at dusk on the first Sunday (or Saturday) after Ash Wednesday. The whole jamboree is called “Funkenfeuer”, which chases away winter and will light up minds in Vienna today, too. At the Himmel, they erect a huge, 14 metre-high (!) wooden tower and set it on fire around 19:00. For feasting they have savoury Käsknöpfle and Funkaküachle and hearty brass music for your ears. The spectacle is extremely popular, so better take public transport to get there.

 Max Raabe
Max Raabe
“Der perfekte Moment... wird heut verpennt” – the title song of Max Raabe’s new album is a hymn on idleness. When the ageless singer with the nasal voice sings about it, he has a ukulele jingling along, and being lazy suddenly sounds like Hawaii, holidays, and summer. And gets you into the mood to stay in the place with the least resistance – in bed. The fine irony of the songs from the 20s and 30 effortlessly combines with Raabe’s quirky humour. Today, Herr Raabe is in Vienna with his Palast orchestra, listen in (and watch cute cats) here!

Nice spring-bargain hunt including food! Since the organisers Laura Hörzelberger and Julia Koffer work at the Gürtelbräu, it’s converted into a flea market venue today for the first time. 15 private exhibitors have cleared out at their places and bring lots of second-hand stuff and vintage clothes with them, the feel-good shopping sound is provided by DJane Eicheling, and since nobody likes spending money with a rumbling tummy, the Gürtelbräu is open on Sunday just this once and will serve warm sandwiches baked with cheese and drinks.

Diet Between Climate Change & Medicine
A fact to be taken seriously: one fifth of CO2-emissions is created by our eating habits that are often unhealthy. At the same time, climate change also makes it more difficult to feed all of humanity since the extreme freak weather leads to more and more crop failures. A complex topic! In today’s lecture, physician Christine Tretter explains the connection between the modern nutrition medicine and the ecological demands on the question of a sustainable lifestyle. Avocado or no avocado – that is the question ;-)

Revolverheld
For the publishing of their new album “Zimmer mit Blick”, the legendary Revolverhelden from Northern Germany have been tugged back to where it all started. However, knowing the avid group, it’s clear they won’t be satisfied with a few small club concerts ;-) So it’s a big tour, after all! Today, the Hamburg cult band is at Stadthalle, true to the motto “And we dance as we did the first time, and it doesn’t matter at all how it looks.” Listen in here to get into dancing mood.

Japanese Taiko Drumming Concert
Amazing and free! There is some Japanese drumming happening today in Floridsdorf, provided by an ensemble of 26 musicians, namely the percussion group Mejirodai-Daiko from Tokyo. Boom! The group will not just play traditional pieces that usually accompany Japanese festivals and parades, but also popular Japanese tunes and even some reworked Austrian folk songs adapted for Taiko drumming. The age range of the ensemble is pretty big,  as well – the musicians are between 10 and 73 years old and they all give everything they’ve got! You can check it out here.

Black-Blue uncensored
The satirical news by „Tagespresse” are simply second to none. Their show at Rabenhof is equally sharp-tongued and super evil: uncensored and relentlessly, the research team uncovers how the government is dismantling the welfare state – and how the opposition is dismantling itself. For instance, “Die Tagespresse” got hold of old primary school documents of young Sebastian that gave indicators to his future career even then, and a “Burschenschafter” acting as a hip influencer analyses how Kickl wants to control critical media, true to the motto “Little Brother is watching you!”. Tragically-funny ;-)

Ingeniously constructed silence: at the Ringturm, you can currently admire “Sacral Spaces” of Swiss star-architect Mario Botta. He is considered one of the key figures behind “new Ticino architecture”, traces of some of the great masters of modernism from Kahn to Le Corbusier can be found in Mario Botta’s pencil. The exhibition explores 22 of Botta’s beautiful sacral monuments that exist around the world, from a mosque in China to the modern chapel cube in Zillertal valley. Botta puts particular emphasis on the “spazio del sacro”, the “space of silence”. Beautiful!

Bouldering for Beginners
Climbing without fear of heights-danger and technical tangle? In that case bouldering might be for you! You climb at a height where you can jump or fall onto a thick mattress without any danger. That gives you the chance to perform short but difficult climbing moves that are either pre-set or created by yourself – entirely without ropes or securing equipment. Today, a beginner’s course starts at the Kletterhalle: in six two-hour-sessions, you are shown the best climbing techniques and learn how to prevent unnecessary falls from fellow climbing colleagues by “spotting”.

BAR/terre
Not long ago, when hurrying through the city, I was out of breath in Praterstraße. Conveniently just in front of Hotel Sofitel, which recently underwent major renovation and is now called SO/Vienna. On the ground floor (parterre!), right next to the entrance, you find the Bar/terre which is also a café and offers shelter to exhausted city ladies. Chic furniture, not many guests during the day, lovely service. And the menu may not be extensive but creative, in tune with the elegant hotel. Wheat wrap with organic chicken, witty snack plate, pastrami sandwich. And they even make their own sourdough bread.
