"Heya Girls!"
Great cinema under a starry sky! Currently, the projector is turned on in Vienna on roofs (Main Library), on squares (Volxkino) and in front of the city hall at dusk. But the most beautiful open-air cinema in the city is located at the Augartenspitz starting this week. In the romantic garden of the Filmarchiv, the entire spectrum of Austrian and international filmmaking will be shown this year on 60 evenings on a journey of discovery. With a tribute to the great Frances McDormand, who picked up another Oscar this year with “Nomadland”, with great music films and with a special for silent film fans. It is best combined with a visit to the “Grünstern Heurigen”, where you can treat yourself before and after the cinema in the midst of a magically overgrown piece of city jungle. On the menu is organic regional food only and the creatively put together pallet pavilion is as legendary as the open fireplace. That's how I like summer in the city!

Wishing you a relaxed week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

 Lena Hoschek
Summer Sale at Lena Hoschek
This is your chance: the latest pieces from Lena Hoschek's Spring/Summer 2021 collection with the peppy title “Antoinette's Garden” can now be snatched at 30 percent off. The collection was inspired by the historical spirit of the 18th century as well as the call “back to nature”. This is reflected in floral patterns on wide-swinging skirts as well as on waist-hugging 1950s-style dresses or perky foulards. All very suitable for adding a feminine touch and a whiff of fashionable extravagance to mild summer evenings.

 WienerTafel
Wiener Tafel: Food Centre Opening
For 22 years, Wiener Tafel has been saving food from the rubbish to pass it on to those affected by poverty and to social institutions. Now there is reason to celebrate: the association has built a new food centre at the wholesale market in Inzersdorf, which offers more storage space for the increasing demand for food. Today is Open House – mayor Michael Ludwig will also be there. They will offer culinary supplies, a puzzle rally where you can win prizes, and live music by the Wiener Kabinett Orchester. A festival all about solidarity!

Sonic Territories
Experimental sound art meets live techno from the Viennese club scene – and Seestadt Aspern becomes a world of sound. Under the motto “What's between your head and mine?” sound installations can be heard around the lake for four days. For example, the audio-visual artwork “Machine in Flux” by the South Korean multimedia artist Sunjoo Lee and sound art by Aleyda Rocha. Anna Barfuss makes the sounds of swimming resound with “Pool Exercises”. The theme of disco will be revived in a vacant pub, with walking concerts and live sets every evening in the Fabrik.

Sustainable City Tour
Who doesn’t know this? The offer is temptingly large, we constantly buy too many textiles and the wardrobes is overflowing. The association “Zero Waste Austria” shows ways out of the consumption spiral today as part of the guided tour “Slow and Fair instead of Fast Fashion”. Participants learn where to buy fairly produced and sustainable clothing in Vienna, how to upcycle and interesting facts about recycling, second-hand and the production of fair clothes. Meeting point is in front of the shop of the upcycling clothes maker kaRja. There’s a lot of walking – wear sturdy shoes!

Restauration Class by Lichterloh
The Lichterloh design boutique on Gumpendorferstraße has been Vienna's top address for furniture and design from the 1920s to the 1970s for over 30 years. No wonder that a lot of expertise in restoring furniture has come together here! In the workshop of the design professionals in the Ankerbrotfabrik, an introductory course is therefore being held today for all those interested: Using a workpiece from the shop, participants will practise how to whip vintage pieces made of wood or metal back into shape by polishing and repairing small flaws. Next date: 28 August.

Quidditch Trial Training at Prater
Wingardium Leviosa! For once, you won't need this levitation spell from the Harry Potter universe; the teams will stay on the ground in this Quidditch game. But it's still fun, and it's certainly bizarre to ride on a little stick that serves as a “broom substitute” and chase the various balls. If, contrary to expectations, you don't remember the somewhat complicated rules, fear not: before the try-out session, they will explain again what is meant by quaffle, bludger and snitch – for all those who only now want to become Harry Potter enthusiasts.

Wie gewachsen
What do humans and vegetables have in common? At first glance, nothing, but on closer inspection, quite a lot: for the human body, and especially the female body, is subject to rigid beauty standards, just like veggies in the supermarket. Anything not conforming to the ideas of perfect forms does not make it to the public. Vegetables end up in the bin, women hide their bodies. But the fact that every body is beautiful, and so are all veggies, is shown by photographer Ines Futterknecht in the exhibition “Wie gewachsen”. She celebrates differences and shows the beauty of naturalness.

Mystically beautiful and tenderly touching – Avec’s songs really go deep. Today, the young singer/songwriter from Vöcklabruck in Upper Austria will give you goosebumps at the Globe. In her songs, Avec describes life, tells stories and shares experiences, sometimes dark, sometimes cheerful and always full of feeling. The third album “Homesick”, released last year, made a huge impression on music critics, and the young musician now has sixty million streams on the music platform Spotify and plays at sold-out locations.

Ana Moura
One million albums sold make Ana Moura one of the most famous fado singers in the world. In 2010, Moura was voted Portugal's best singer, and she has even performed on stage with the Rolling Stones. Now the charismatic artist with her smoky voice will grace the Vienna Konzerthaus to sing fado: songs that deal with unfulfilled longing, homesickness and unhappy love and reflect the melancholy side of Portugal. The lively rhythms and a modern instrumentation turn the concert into a true musical experience.

Alma
With the band Alma, five young people masterly realise their ideas of how traditional folk music sounds in a cool and modern way. They play and sing in a way that’s alpine and transalpine, lyrical and lively, smart and entertaining. With the harmony between tradition and modernity, the band now wants to cause a sensation on the occasion of their 10th anniversary. The first part of the concert will be devoted to experimental sounds, while the second part will feature traditional music with violin, vocals, diatonic harmonica and double bass. “Summer of Love” at the Underdog Bar
Vienna's bars and clubs have for the most part scraped along during the crisis – but some were still active, like the Underdog Bar, which provided us with drinks in a relaxed manner with its “cocktail taxi” even during Corona. Now everything opens up again, and the Underdog awards a thank-you in liquid form: during happy hour from Tuesday to Thursday, every cocktail, mule and long drink is available for 6 (six!) euros. Also new on the menu: creations like Watermelonix or Cherry Pop. And a hot dog as a “cushion”. A must ;-)

Ane Mette Hol: Becoming
Norwegian artist Ane Mette Hol takes a close look at the conditions of art production. The working process is examined in detail – and attention is focused on apparent trivialities such as objects used in the process of creation or waste products. The solo exhibition at the mumok, which will start today, makes the art-making process visible and shows, for example, a transport box, packaging material, or a roll of paper as an indication that the exhibition space has only recently been painted – including paint stains and dust residues.

Fräulein Else Vintage
Cora Zimbrich alias Fräulein Else has changed her residence: in the handsome shop including a large changing room, there’s around 60 square metres for you to shop for (newly sewn) fashion in vintage style from the 1920s to the 1960s –and not only at moderate prices and from Austrian production, but also perfectly custom-tailored. Every item, whether dresses, skirts, trousers or tops, can be requested in the sizes 38 to 50 or can be altered –the affiliated atelier makes it possible. Mainly natural materials such as linen or cotton are used for the clothes.

Kraus
This is likely the longest velvet bench in town now. Petrol blue, with an imposing back wall, it stretches almost through the entire restaurant – it literally screams at you to get comfy right away. During the day, the Kraus (yeah, named after Karl Kraus) is an elegant coffee house. There are snacks, nice breakfast, really good coffee, and cakes to die for from Patisserie Marischka. In the evening, they pull away the wall panel in front of the bar and the café turns into a nightclub with an impressive bottle collection. Plus: direct access to the Kahan Art Space. Cool!
