Vienna Shorts 2021
This year the Internationa l Short Film Festival really goes all out! On the one hand, a third of the more than 300 films can finally be seen live in the cinema again – on the big screen and with popcorn vibes, hallelujah. On the other hand, all categories and specials – such as “Pandemic”, “ Animal Films” and “Late Night” – are full of numerous winner films from festivals, like Sundance, Rotterdam & co (programme here). The big opening open-air takes place with short films from France, America and Austria today at the Karmelitermarkt. Free entry. And on 30 May EsRAP will beatbox at Porgy&Bess!

Josef und Yuki Street Food Pop-Up
After the fledgling 3-toque chef Patrick Pass has already cooked up Salzburg, Linz and Villach with his super street food, he will now delight Vienna for 3 weeks. Josef und Yuki is the name of the concept with a toque, with which he makes guest appearances at four different locations in Vienna. They offer Alpine-Asian fusion finger food, partly freshly prepared, partly as a ready-made gourmet dish in a jar. It starts today at Heldenplatz with “ water spinach, organic eggs and truffle”, “Alpine prawns with papaya and lemongrass” and “T-maki with local organic fish”. Yumyum!

Whether ballerinas, sling pumps or sandals – if you want to know what the lady of the world will be wearing in 2021, you have to make a detour to the Wunderl pop-up today. Normally, fashionistas make a pilgrimage to Sollenau for this very reason. But the super-shoe-gurus Andrea and Franz Wunderl have unceremoniously packed up their new range and spread it out for 3 days in the Vienna Ballhaus. So, the way to happiness is short :-) Super hip: the “Wunderl Pumps” with straps in the dreamy version “aqua Lack” and the cool-chunky “Pons Quintana” woven sandal in cognac.

“What if...” – aren't those two hopeful words? What if our planet has a future after all? What if the inhabitants of earth could once again appreciate each other? The newly opened exhibition Climate Care at the MAK deals precisely with such questions of climate care. On display are 100 captivating works from all art disciplines. For example, the impressive XXL photograph “Amazon” by Andreas Gursky, which questions global fast consumption, or the inspiring Greta Thunberg portrait “Blutkörperchen” by Thomas Bayrle. A must!

Today we're going for a hike! No, not up a mountain, but through the gallery scene in Vienna's city centre. For two days, the Open Days of the Austrian Gallery Association will take place at over 30 exhibition venues. And they tempt visitors with brand-new shows. At Galerie Krinzinger, for example, enfant terrible Jonathan Meese shows his latest “Dr. Mabusenlolita” craze. At Galerie Slavik, Karola Torkos, Anna Heindl & Co provide “Schmuck Sehnsucht”. And at Sophie Tappeiner's “Tenant of Culture” you can marvel at abstract fabric art. Cool!

The ceremonial exodus of the Orangery
This only happened when the Emperor was still alive! Today, as 100 years ago, the move of the citrus trees out of the Orangery building is celebrated as a festive event in the tradition of the court gardeners. With historic transport carts and old equipment, gardeners transport the plants from the sheltered Orangery to the parterre. In addition, citrus trees are repotted with the help of a replica of the real Schönbrunn transplantation device and tips and tricks for citrus culture are offered. There will also be a small flowery gift and professional advice on cultivating potted plants.

Chilly Gonzales
Viennese fans have been eagerly awaiting the musical j ack-of-all-trades since December 2020. And rightly so! Because when Chilly Gonzales steps onto the stage, the ear muscles and the laughing muscles twitch in equal measure. The welcome video “In Bed with Chilly Gonzales” on his homepage shows that the Canadian piano virtuoso, poet and entertainer has a lot of humour: in it, he is lolling around happily next to a lion's pillow because he is so bored with Corona. But today is the day! Gonzales delivers – live! – a really chill mix of pop, rap and classical music. Listen in here!

This sparkling comedy by Tristan Petitgirard is about love. Or rather about how to skilfully get out of it when it's gone. In the play, it's up to protagonist Eric from the agency “Trennung frei Haus” to take on this unpleasant job for others. Obviously, everything will go wrong this time! Testosterone meets oestrogen, situation comedy meets polished dialogue. And a super-funny Sonja Zobel (as Pauline) meets two cunning little sauceboxes. No wonder that the charming French play was nominated for the Prix Molière in 2015. Totally hilarious!

Marcus Täuber has a doctorate in neurobiology, teaches at several universities and is also a bestselling author. In his latest work, he once again comes up with the goods in terms of brain research. Let's hope for better weather, because it's not exactly cosy and warm in the brand-new Cafe Friedl, apparently the air conditioning is a bit overactive. But the place does look très chic and the chocolate tart tastes great here. The siblings who own the large coffee house are passionate about breakfast, which is immediately apparent from the menu: everything from muesli to Eggs Benedict to French toast is represented. Thai curry and snacks are then served for lunch. By the way, the desire to open a café arose in Hawaii – which is perhaps the reason for the fetching jungle wallpaper ;-)
