editorial

"Heya Girls!"
After almost two years of Corona, this is truer than ever: life itself writes the most incredible stories. Which, by the way, makes us all gifted leading ladies ;-) Sometimes life comes along as a comedy, sometimes as a tragedy – and this year's Viennale film programme is just as colourful and varied. Austria's largest international film event will show domestic films such as “Große Freiheit” by Sebastian Meise as well as Jane Campion's “Power of the Dog” or the wonderful film “L'evenement” about an abortion at the beginning of the 1960s, for which Audrey Diwan won the Golden Lion in Venice. And as a star guest, the great Matt Dillon will come to Vienna himself with his new film “Land of Dreams”! Quite instructive to dive into foreign fates, relationships and realities – but tough times for cineastes! The Viennale, with over 200 films on 11 days, all but forces us to spend day and night in the cinema.

Wishing you a flickering week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Fashion Show by time4africa
Imma Baumgartner, the designer with a great love for Africa, creates the most beautiful pieces from original African fabrics that she brings back from her many travels. Her label time4africa became known for its colourful dirndl creations made of African fabrics combined with traditional Austrian cuts. In the meantime, the Tyrol-born designer mainly designs dresses with a classic silhouette – today she is showing her current autumn/winter collection at a fashion show. Until Tuesday, you can then also buy the unique pieces in the showroom next door!

 Lumine Projections
Light Art re:flexion at MQ
It will be the laser show of the year – and it has nothing to do with clubbing. To celebrate its birthday, the MQ gifts to itself colourful lights and optical illusions, accompanied by stimulating rhythms. The main façade, the Leopold Museum, Hall E+G and the mumok take on exciting new forms through light projections. These in turn change to the beat of the music – laser pulses, reflections, 360-degree show. If you can't keep up with watching, you can see the fascinating composition for free (!) several times an evening for a whole week. Happy Birthday, MQ!

In Line: Nazi Politics of Art in Vienna
Very fascinating topic that hardly anyone has paid attention to yet! What was that again with Viennese artists and the Nazis? Anyone who wanted to work as an artist had to become a member of the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts. The membership files of around 3,000 Viennese artists have been preserved – and they have recently been scientifically processed for the first time. Many works by these artists from the Nazi era are also in the depots of Vienna's museums. The new source material provides insights into the political power structures, processes and networks. On view now at Musa.

Kunstasyl 2021
Wow, today you can bid for works by Arnulf Rainer, Friedensreich Hundertwasser & Co! And do good in the process. Contemporary artists from Austria donated a total of 58 works to the NGO Asyl in Not. The charitable organisation offers refugees legal advice and representation in asylum proceedings. Since the organisation is financed almost exclusively by donations, it organises the annual charity auction Kunstasyl: Via the website of the Dorotheum auction house, you can still bid for 2 days! And perhaps you’ll soon have an Ernst Fuchs at home.

Venus in Furs
A play about a play. The plot: Venus in Furs, the novella from 1870, is being dramatised. In the book, a man is kept as a slave by his mistress at his own request. The book was written by the Austrian author Leopold Sacher-Masoch, after whom masochism is famously named. In any case, the director of the play is looking for a leading lady, but none is convincing enough for him – only the last candidate will do. The boundaries between reality and fiction disappear. The question remains: who has how much power over the other?

Stella Sommer: Northern Dancer
A lover alone is no lover, writes Stella Sommer. The singer/songwriter with the wonderfully deep voice is at the Volkstheater today and more than lives up to her name on solo album number 2 ;-) Sommer sounds a bit like Leonhard Cohen and a bit like Nico, in short: like a melancholy late summer day. Originally, the musician started out with her band “Die Heiterkeit” and poetic pop in German. Today, however, she is English-speaking and on her own. It sounds folky, like chanson and 60s pop with an occasional synth influence. And it is very, very beautiful. Listen in here.

Night Tour at the Zoo
Unfortunately, it's getting dark earlier and earlier now. It's a bit depressing, but it also has its advantages: like the night tour at the zoo starting earlier than in summer, for example. When all the visitors have left the zoo, you stalk in a small group through the dark realm of sleeping and nocturnal zoo animals –equipped with Swarovski night-vision devices and under qualified supervision. Among other things, you will make the acquaintance of Egyptian fruit bats that sail through the air like ghosts, while passing though the hippo house.

Hiking in the Danube-Auen National Park
Yes, that's how times change. In the past, CitySpotter- Girl was happy to spend a day lounging on the sofa. Nowadays, she prefers to get some moderate exercise. Like on National Day: the Danube-Auen National Park traditionally invites you to free guided walks. In the autumnal Danube wetlands you can walk with a national park ranger along the Danube to the legendary Röthelstein ruins in Hainburg. Or you can get to know the Orther wetlands right outside the city gates, with all things that creep and fly there.

International Storytelling Festival
Storytelling can be done in many different ways, as can be experienced today at the pretty MQ Libelle. The Serbian musician Jelena Poprzan, for example, describes her impressions of the world on the viola. Russian performer Dmitriy Yenin and French mime-clown Julien Cottereau, on the other hand, portray stories with their bodies. Turkish storyteller Nazli describes things with colourful words that stimulate the imagination, while Italian beatboxer Moses has even created his own storytelling genre. Beautiful stories with free admission!

Tina Naderer
Lower Austrian musician Tina Naderer makes pop that could also come from Berlin. The 24-year-old was discovered in 2017 on the German casting show The Voice Of Germany and learned a lot from her coach at the time, Yvonne Catterfeld. Now she recorded her first album of her own: Naderer sings about relationships, unexpected encounters, insecurity and the courage to be happy. Ohne Filter (Without Filter) is not just the title of the album. Today the singer can be heard live at the WUK. Her support AnJosef alias Anna Heimrath was part of the current new edition of Starmania.

Dacia Maraini is considered the grande dame of the Italian literary scene, the 85-year-old is a serious contender for the Nobel Prize. Musette Shop
A museum shop without a museum – that's how owner Isabelle Blanc jokingly describes this boutique of beautiful things. The Frenchwoman originally worked as an exhibition curator, now she runs a bookshop that is not a bookshop at all: every three months, the assortment of the small shop changes and it has a different theme. At the moment: time. For this, Blanc has selected books together with a chronobiologist. But also typewriters, old typesetting boxes and pretty ceramics were brought together – all things that stand the test of time. And there is also fine stationery.

Banh Mi Hoi An
Fortunately, it was a long time ago, but Vietnam occupied by the French until 1956. The French also brought the baguette to the country –and the resourceful Vietnamese added rice flour to the dough (making it lighter) and created Banh Mi. The perfectly topped, warm sandwich became a popular street food –and now it's also available on Wieden! Topped with eggplant, grilled pot roast or tofu, these things taste delicious here. Just like the Pho or the Vietnamese goulash (it really exists!). The cooking is done by Thuy An, the service by her young nephew. A highly likeable family business!
