Tipps der Stadtspionin

editorial

"Heya Girls!"
“Viennagreycold” is really quite depressing, especially after the surprising summer of the last few days. But it was the same last year, by the way. We stood freezing in the drizzle in the Botanical Garden and no one really cared. And it will be the same this weekend, because: The much-loved Rare Plants Fair in the Botanical Garden is coming up! And once again I will be spending way too much money ;-) Of the many spring plant and garden markets, the Rarity Fair remains the best tip for greenery lovers and balcony flower whisperers. For three days, you can buy plants away from mass production at reasonable prices: earth orchids, peonies, scented geraniums, truffle trees, rare seeds and organically grown vegetables. And it's just so lovely to stroll through! For those who prefer not to spend money: There will be plant exchange markets in several districts over the next few days.

Wishing you a blooming week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Blue New Deal
In the coming decades, the oceans will either become the greatest threat to humanity – or we make them our most powerful ally in the fight against global warming. In his series “Blue New Deal”, photographer Fabian Weiss explored togeher with journalistst of "Der Freitag" the importance of the ocean for our future. For their project, they met mangrove foresters in Kenya, fishermen in Honduras and trade unionists in Bangladesh. And they spoke to researchers from all over the world who are already working to save the oceans. Today is the vernissage!

 Soufiane Najah
Aïta mon amour
When she first took to the stage in 2001, Widad Mjama was Morocco's first female rapper in the male-dominated underground scene. Her musical style is also unusual: Widad has always been fascinated by the Chikhates – singers, poets and guardians of the Aïta, a centuries-old tradition of collective female expression. Together with the well-known electronic musician Khalil Epi, she has transported Aïta poems and songs, which embody both the call of warriors and the sensual lamentation of love, into the here and now. Very touching!

Vienna Refugee Ball
The ball season may be over, but one special dance event is still to come. Those who want to combine fun with social responsibility can do so at the 30th Refugee Ball in the Rathaus. In addition to the typical multicultural atmosphere, this year's ball is honouring its founder, Willi Resetarits, who died in an accident in 2022, with an award ceremony for civic commitment. Otherwise, you can look forward to successful musical international understanding with Latino vibes from Pacheco, Carinthian folk music from the klakradl quartet and Turkish ethno-folk from Light in Babylon!

This is going to be problematic for the lazy-footed. Although the Q202 studio tour is free of charge, you'll have to pay a lot of heel money. Because there is lots to explore: On Saturday and Sunday, artists open their doors at 27 locations in the 2nd and 20th districts and invite you to stroll through modern art and design. Melodic Monday
So, was the weekend way too short again? Since the answer to that question is probably a resounding yes, we're going to cheekily take the weekend vibes into overtime ;-) For that, you have to mince in style to Aux Gazelles, where you can finally shake off the winter with Moroccan flair, turning your office hair into a flowing mane and your business blouse into a crop top to the finest Afro House. The sets will be spun by hip DJs and the party will go on until midnight a la Cinderella, so you'll be fresh as a daisy at your desk tomorrow. Or something ;-)

CleanUp Danube Canal
The Danube washes four tonnes of plastic into the Black Sea every day! And if you have ever seen the amount of rubbish littering the banks of the Danube you will get all dizzy. So today, on Earth Day, we're rolling up our sleeves and cleaning up. Caritas is organising a joint clean-up event along the Danube Canal. Collecting rubbish together as a cleaning team is actually really fun. And afterwards, there will be a film shown about climate change and a discussion with experts – including how each of us can take action. A clean cause!

Maschek: SPIN! How to twist and turn
Are we all crazy? How can it be that the masses are protesting loudly against supposed coronavirus dictatorships while social injustice is boiling? Or that we believe a crazy car manufacturer that he can stop the climate crisis while he blithely pollutes the night sky with phallic rockets? Today, the satirical duo Maschek are once again taking a close look at politics, business and society. They take their cue from various TV stations and YouTube channels for an open-ended evening – synchronised, improvised, projected and really funny!

Mira Lu Kovacs
Radically soulful – that's the motto of the Viennese musician, who proves time and again that strong voices don't always have to be loud. Today, for example, with her new single “Disappear”, a folk-pop song that is intended as a gentle appeal to all people-pleasers and tip-toers not to forget themselves. The bluesy-eclectic melange offers an emotional sanctuary, while Mira shows her vulnerability with her voice and encourages her listeners to do the same. Fans and those who might want to become fans can find out what that feels like tonight!

The value of CASH
“Money, money, money...”, just as ABBA sang about money as a means to happiness at the end of the 1970s, the current exhibition at the Museum Technology also highlights the significance of cash. Because this extends far beyond its role as a medium of exchange of goods: what do coins and notes smell like, how do vending machines actually recognise money, how is the cycle from production to use to disposal organised, and will we even have cash anymore in the future? All these questions are answered in 14 exciting exhibition stations!

Cayo Coco
Well, all of Vienna wants to go there right now, obviously! The newly opened The Hoxton hotel is the hottest shit in town. The former “Gewerbehaus” now houses rooms, the Bouvier restaurant and a basement bar. The rooftop bar Cayo Coco sits enthroned on top, bringing 1950s Havana to Vienna. Between swimming pool and jungle plants, you can take a relaxing break with views of the city centre. For the drinks and bar food (shrimp with pineapple dip, chicharrones) there’s still room for improvement, but this is the soft opening phase, after all. But the atmosphere is great. Make sure to book!
