"Heya Girls!"
“I can’t draw” – a pretty mean belief which unfortunately many people are familiar with from an early age. I know that since I – an alleged scrawler – am from a family full of highly talented drawers. But now I say: away with this sentence! We should unrestrainedly paint over it and erase old convictions. Because the ArtNights, fun-casual Social Painting Events, offer the perfect opportunity for your first and certainly successful picture. The idea for it was brought to us by Berlin-based start-up duo Aimie and David, by now the drawing evenings take place in over 30 German cities and now regularly in Vienna as well. And this is how it works: a small group of willing people meets at a cool venue in the evening to draw a precisely predefined picture together. An artist demonstrates step by step how to do it, and the entire material from brush to apron is provided there. Nice side-effect: you get to know new people during the whole colouring and doodling, you have fun, and take home a great finished picture. The next ArtNights in Vienna: “Buddha” and “Frida Kahlo” at Café Das Möbel. So, are your fingers itching yet?

Wishing you a colourful week,

 Hotel Daniel Vienna
Daniel Summernight BBQ
Barbecuing, slurping summer punch & eating outside: once again you can indulge in these wonderful summer-musts at the stylish Hotel Daniel. Every Thursday and (new!) Saturday night, barbecue boss Manfred is hard at work there, the front yard is transformed into a chill oasis (and the Daniels know how to chill!) and accompanied by cool music they grill not only steaks and fish but also veggies like corn cobs. With that they serve baked potatoes, pita bread and salads as well as tasty, home-made sauces. And “all you can eat”, at that! Bad for your beach body, but who cares ;-)

 Footsteps
Sale at Footsteps
Ladies, today you quickly gotta race into the city – and chase some shoe bargains! The cool sneaker store is rearranging and clearing out its storage, so they sell off stylish brand models from Adidas to Vagabond, plus some pretty sandals, ballerinas, and comfy casuals. Simply everything a woman needs to hop well-shod through the summer. Among the shoes 30 to 50 percent off are hot new ones as well as hip remnant pairs from previous seasons. Apart from footwear, by the way, you can also shop for casual-cool summer fashion, for instance from “American Vintage”!

 Belvedere Wien
Say it with flowers!
From Waldmüller’s opulent flower bouquet to Klimt’s famous sunflowers: an exhibition at Belvedere now shows beautiful floral works of different artists and styles, from Biedermeier up to the beginning of the 20th century. In the space of that time period, flower painting underwent an enormous transformation – and the centre of events was our fine city, where in the 19th century flower painting achieved the height of its glory. Aside from paintings they also show porcelains and sculptures, plus some contemporary art. Glorious! Vernissage is today.

Eden Garments-Pop Up
Christina Zauner, a dancer from a little village called Eden, refers to her sexy lingerie as comfortable body ornaments. A few of the young designer’s models consist of very little fabric (even for underwear) – that’s because she also dances burlesque and tailors her costumes herself. Her lingerie line – including less saucy stuff like cute lace bralettes! – is hand-made in Vienna and can be acquired today during the young label’s first pop-up at We Bandits. There you can enjoy a glass of Prosecco in a chill atmosphere and try what flatters your curves, forms, and wrinkles best. ;-)

 Byron Katie
„The Work” with Byron Katie
Get out of the destructive thought carousel! The formula of success of world-famous bestselling author Byron Katie is incredibly simple: it makes a huge difference what we think and what kind of relationship we have with our thoughts. Which are responsible for our happiness. So it’s already helpful to ask four major questions. You can find out what they are and how “The Work” works during a 2-day-workshop first-hand from its charismatic inventress. She, too, learned that her thoughts were to blame for her suffering and since then she provides the manual for happiness herself.

One street, ten hobby cooking teams, two dishes made with the same ingredients and a big lay jury – that’s the concept of the big cooking competition in the 7th district. Hungry walk-in customers get a tasting pass plus cutlery and napkin and can then eat themselves through the creations of the competitors all around Hermanngasse and judge them. The most diverse groups are participating there – from Casa Caria or the team from Audiamo at Kaiserstraße (the previous year’s winners!) to the private father-daughter-team. Let’s see who’ll win this time!

Boat trip “Midsummer Special”
Sniff! What a bad day, the summer solstice, when the days are getting shorter again. But there is no time for moping, it’s vital to take full advantage of the long days and mild nights! For example, today there is a romantic boat trip to Wachau, where there will be countless of solstice fires. The plan:  Before midday, boarding of MS Admiral Tegetthoff, followed by an extensive brunch while the ship is chugging down the Danube toward Dürnstein. There you have enough time to experience the solstice fire(work)s before you get on the bus around midnight to head home. So much for the nights are getting longer ;-)

Picnic in the Park
Why yes, there are Festwochen in Hietzing too now! They’ve been going on since the end of April and offer a variety of nice neighbourhood-events such as concerts, readings or guided walks. On today’s program you find a picnic in the pretty park of Kardinal König Haus for which you’ll have to bring blankets as well as food and drinks plus friends yourself. Musical entertainment, on the other hand, is provided by DJ Picknicker and guitarist Andie Gabauer.  By the way, the Hietzinger Festwochen run until 30 June, on this final day there will be a hike across the seven hills of Hietzing. Nice!

Sugar-Flower course – Hibiscus
Hard to believe, but the beautiful flower in the picture above is indeed made of sugar! Even beginners can learn how to do that in today’s one-day workshop. They show you how to colour the sugar paste, how to use tools like moulds, cutters, the stabilising flower wire, and the dust colours which make the hibiscus look so deceptively real. And of course they offer lots of tips and tricks, so that you will be able to do it yourself later. Because if you know hibiscus you know all flowers, that’s what the pros say ;-) If you pretty up your cakes with that, you will be the star of every party!

Gfrerer & Spengler
Two “g’scheite” musicians - Austrian for smart and good! Gottfried David Gfrerer, probably Europe’s best slide guitarist, and songwriter Martin Spengler, who writes amazingly touching songs, are a musical dream-team. Gfrerer’s own virtuously plucked blues & folk songs meet petical dialect-country songs by Spengler that tell tales about love, death and other wastrels. In their joint program “Wien-Texas” Gfrerer & Spengler also succeed in a Viennese approach to the young Bob Dylan with the necessary ease and gravity. Amazing!

Royal and Imperial Purveyor
Carrying the title of a royal and imperial purveyor to the court back in the days of the emperor was practically like being knighted. Even today, there are still businesses that were part of the crème de la crème in their respective guild or branch of trade. During a guided tour with Margot König, you can learn fascinating facts about the history of past and present Viennese shops. A few have survived the fall of the monarchy and are still pursuing their traditional work, for example the shoemaker Scheer, chandelier Lobmeyr or the perfumery Filz that has been in existence since 1809.

Im Verborgenen
A stirring page-turner for the summer reading list! Powerful yet unsentimental is the novel “Im Verborgenen” (hidden away) of Ljuba Arnautovic, born 1954 in Kursk, about a quiet heroine of the Second World War. Genofeva works at the High Consistory’s office, it’s the year 1944. Nobody imagines that the woman has been hiding people in her apartment for months. And nobody knows about her political past that could put herself at the highest risk. Today, the author is reading from her thrilling debut novel at Magdas Hotel.

Femme Maison
Although their fashion sells internationally from Hongkong to L.A, the likable creative couple behind “Femme Maison” has stayed grounded. Designer Franziska Fürpass and her husband Sia Kermani prefer focusing on the business of their heart: personally dress women in high-quality fashion. In order to follow this dream, they have opened their own atelier in Servitenviertel for some relaxed (window) shopping. Whether it’s elegant long silk dresses, dimly gleaming 70s two-pieces or YSL-inspired prints for the summer collection - beautiful Austrian couture that is both suitable for salon & everyday life.

100 Tage Sommer
Not far from SCS and the pyramid of Vösendorf, not exactly the most attractive corner of metropolitan Vienna, there is actually an idyllic bathing pond, if you can believe it. Surrounded by trees, a sand beach and a cosy open-air bath. And every day after 17:30, that pond turns into a nice restaurant at the water. You’re sitting on the dock in the middle of the lake or on the beach, chilling in comfy sofas, looking over the water. DJs provide proper lounge-music – and the food (noodles, salads, burger, fish) tastes surprisingly good. And as culmination: a cheesecake in the glass. Now that’s how I like it!
