"Heya Girls!"
So, ladies, did you make it into the new decade okay? And back up to full operating temperature already? I’m not quite yet, honestly. If you're still a little bit hung up on partying and feasting, like me, you can get yourself some fitting pick-me-up this weekend. At the Vienna Coffee Festival in the Ottakringer Brewery, everything that makes coffeistas and caffeine junkies happy is served hot and scalding for three days. The times where no one gave a bean about where the beans come from or how they are roasted and ground are long gone. Of course everyone knows what a barista is, and an original Italian espresso machine in your own kitchen is the ultimate status symbol. That's why world-class baristas show off their skills at the festival, you can sip through special roasts, take part in workshops or get inspired in terms of "latte art" in a foamy way. High pulse guaranteed!
Wishing you a wakened week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

eigensinnig Archive Sale
Very avant-garde, very cool: eigensinnig is definitely one of the most interesting concept stores in town. And if the character pieces, almost all of which are black and grey, are available at reduced prices for once, then you just gotta be there! Especially since the sale is all about "warming artifacts". Discounts of up to 70% are hurled towards the cold January! Namely in the form of unusual winter jackets and coats, soft (knitted) sweaters and cardigans, trousers, scarves and wooly caps from selected designers and samples of their own collections.
eigensinnig, Sankt-Ulrichs-Platz 4, 1070 Vienna. Mon-Fri 11:00 to 19:00, Sat 10:00 to 18:00. Web

Let’s play Ballet
Now, ballet is not exactly what women who have already passed puberty usually dare to learn. But movement educator Ramona Schmid offers a pleasantly playful approach. In her course she helps adults to gain exciting insights into their own anatomy by using movements from ballet. And not à la "Plié to Oops", but rather in an inquiring and light-footed manner. Beginners and the curious are given a sound basis in ballet technique, but everything happens in a completely playful way. Even untrained bodies are incredibly eager to learn!

Großmütterchen Hatz
Listening to singer Franziska Hatz and her whirlwind-orchestra makes you feel like you are being catapulted right into the Balkan comedy "Black Cat, White Cat". There too, you go down the Danube towards the Black Sea, sound-wise – fiery, powerful-voiced, jazz- and Klezmer-rhythmically. Tonight the band will be making a guest appearance in the Sargfabrik to give their already obligatory New Year's concert. So please buckle up (or just dance wildly!). Together with guests (Ö1-woman Mirjam Jessa, who reads texts) ignite musical fireworks! Listen in here.

Photo Vernissage Around31
Seven portraits, seven young women in search of independence: this is what the Upper Austrian photographer Katharina Fröschl-Roßboth captures in her photo series "Around 31". On view are very intimate photographs taken during personal conversations between the photographer and women from Iceland, Portugal, Iran and Austria. Why? Because she wanted to know how other women in their early 30s were doing. Somewhere between quarter-life crisis and growing up, Fröschl-Roßboth draws a fascinating map of a generation. Emotional!

Familie Lässig
„Familie Lässig’s” yearly New Year’s Concert has become iconic by now. Last year, the six-member-troupe of Clara Luzia, Manuel Rubey and Gunkl released their first joint album "Im Herzen des Kommerz" and is touring the country with it. Today the fun family is in Vienna and plays their originally interpreted and always wittily presented cover versions from Schlager to pop, as well as their own songs at CasaNova. In-between, bright spark Gunkl will be “gunkling” terms. And since it is such fun, they will play tomorrow too! Listen in here.

Winter Walk at Zentralfriedhof
The Central Cemetery is the largest city in Austria with its 3 million "inhabitants". Opened in 1874, it offers space for everyone: graves of honour for personalities from art, culture and politics, soldiers' graves, memorials, tombs of various faiths and of course graves for the many Viennese. Today you can explore the Zentralfriedhof during a guided tour, with its overgrown corners, imposing funerary monuments, ancient inscriptions and curiosities. To match the occasion: be sure to take tram line 71, the "Gießkannenexpress" ;-)

K&K Curiosity Carousel
Well, look at that! This is extraordinary: A curiosity carousel with show acts by Stefanie Sargnagel, Lydia Haider and Voodoo Jürgens, who has a bone to pick with the guitar. Sounds curious, and it is. What the year 2020 will bring can be predicted by a fortune teller, and those who don't believe in such things can dance the night away at the Ohrwaschlkino or shop at the vintage flea market. The location is also worth a trip: The gallery "Die Schöne" is located behind the Ottakringer Brewery and looks as if you are standing in Brooklyn. Cool!

To batik a silk scarf
Let us start the new year in a creative manner: You can make a silk scarf using the batik technique at the Textilgalerie today. In our part of the world, batik is considered a textile dyeing technique in which individual parts of the fabric are tied off so that the dye cannot penetrate certain parts. But the word “batik” actually comes from Indonesia and means "drawing with wax". With the help of a Tjanting (a small metal pot with a thin tube) or a brush, hot wax is applied to the fabric. If the wax is removed, a drawing remains.

Leather jacket, lust and (self-)love: the new one-woman performance by and with the great Grischka Voss is about the snotty Amanda who consumes sex like other people consume coffee. Cheeky and witty, she talks about masturbation and role clichés, sweeping across the small stage at Drachengasse in a prepotent way. She really is bulletproof, not even afraid of getting old! Or isn't it actually becoming more and more clear that she is really painfully searching for the love to herself? Exciting woman makes exciting theatre – and in her own production!

Time to Laugh at Lachzentrum
So, when was the last time you truly laughed out loud? As children, we laugh 400 times a day, as adults it’s down to only ten times. Pharmacist Nina Fuchs is convinced that laughter is one of the best health precautions of all. That’s why the trained laughter coach is opening her own Lachzentrum on the first floor of her Cottage pharmacy. Exhilarating events take place there, such as Lachzeit (laughter time) on Mondays and Thursdays. Laughter exercises, combined with breathing exercises, give a powerful boost to the happiness shower. Corners of the mouth up ;-)

We still have to endure a wee bit of winter, but the antidepressant today doesn’t come from the pharmacy, but from the wonderful shop of Anne Morel. As of now, prices are dropping there with a 30% discount on all the chic French shoes in the current winter collection. Some elegant boots are still available, the smartly lined leather shoes by Palladium make for a slim and happy foot, too, and there’s always room in the shoe cupboard for stylish sneakers – there are still some by Andrea Conti or No Name waiting. And just like that, the sun is shining again ;-)

Everything green
This is not for the colour blind. And allegedly, it has nothing to do with our new government, either. But in the Upper Belvedere, there’s a guided tour today that’s a bit different – all about green pictures. In keeping with the beginning of the year, green stands for growth, new things and hope. So there. The entertaining tour through the collection leads from lively spring paintings in light green to dark, calming forest pictures. The effect of the paintings is then extended over coffee, tea and cake (all included in the price). And next time violet pink, please.

The three likable ladies at Tessuti are so busy, they rarely look up from their embroidery- and sewing machines. They make towels, linens, cloth baskets, pillows and table sets – everything special, everything handmade, everything really beautiful. It’s obvious these three know a thing or two about quality: the weaving mill is in Italy, the ceramics are painted on by hand in Vienna and the linen fabrics come from Austria and Denmark. You can either shop in the spacious store right away or have the living accessories sewn, combined and embroidered according to your personal wishes. Neat!

Brunch at Motto
The Motto is usually for night-owls, open until 4:00 am and so on. But since recently, the Viennese nightlife hit actually opens its doors already in the morning. At least on the weekends. Behind the inconspicuous metal door, a sumptuous breakfast awaits you in the green velvet wonderland. The motto: go big or go home, they serve strong stuff like Portobello Eggslut (burgers with scrambled eggs and mushrooms) or Benny The Egg Addict (60 minute egg with spinach and sauce hollandaise). Belgian waffles and baked sweet potatoes await the sweet tooth camp. Plus: super nice service!
