"Heya Girls!"
Ladies, when was the last time you palpated your breast? Hopefully it’s not been as long as in my case, because I keep forgetting about it. Not good, I know. After all, breast cancer is still one of the most common causes of death in Austria. And this is the point where I would like to talk about an organization you should know about: “discovering hands” trains blind women on how to be experts of breast palpation. It's an ingenious concept – because of their superior tactile sense, blind people are able to detect knots and tissue changes a lot earlier than doctors or we ourselves could. The organization was founded in 2006 by a German gynecologist and now it’s time for “discovering hands” to come to Austria. For the purpose of becoming officially authorized, a study is being conducted in Vienna right now and everyone can sign up! An appointment consists of a 30-45 minute palpation, a check-up by a doctor and a mammography – a three-pack of safety and if you are over 40 years old, it’s free of charge. This way, the disability of blind women becomes a gift! And we all benefit from it. This is what clever solutions look like!

Wishing you a nice week

H.O.M.E Depot
A design-highlight of this spring: at the H.O.M.E. On four levels (more than 4,500 sqm exhibition-surface) Wittmann, Ligne Roset, Poltrone Frau, Tisca and outdoor specialist Emu are showing off furniture and chic living accessories. Especially eye-catching this year are the bathroom-furnishers: seems like no home can do without a “home-spa” at the moment. Nice to look at and stroll around!

Alive and Swingin’
Rat pack reloaded, with a very interesting cast: Rea Garvey, Xavier Naidoo, Sasha and Michael Mittermaier are all smart and cool, but also incredibly different – not only considering their genres. Nevertheless, they are touring different countries once again after their great success in 2011, and performing their tribute to Sinatra, Dino & co; right now they are swinging and singing in Vienna. The three musicians present interpretations of classics and hits of their colleagues in an ingenious way, Michael Mittermaier provides the comedy interludes and causes laughter between the songs. Cool and funny!

Sale at Fräulein Kleidsam
Ursula Wagner has an eye for special pieces. In the wonderful neighborhood next to Phil & co, the vintage-lover sells textile findings from the 1920s to 1980s, but also exclusive and elaborately restored designer clothes. Now, she has to make some room for new pieces once again. Which means: many of the exclusive unique pieces are looking for a new home in exchange for little money – from today until Saturday they are reduced up to 50 percent and ready to be sold. Also including cool vintage pieces from Prada, YSL, Dries van Noten or Lena Hoschek, and also great bags and shoes!

Invidia – The Evil Eye
Fulminant dance theater about an ugly topic: envy. The stage is decorated in the envy-colors black, red and green and using dance and shadow effects, director Grischka Voss (yes, the daughter of Gert Voss!) is depicting the different varieties of the piercing and unpleasant feeling. Additionally, the performers belt out dark songs, and language isn’t used at all – instead, mimics and movements are even more expressive. Voss was especially interested in how envy affects families, for example between siblings. Who is the envious and who is the “cause of envy”, how does envy develop? Today is the premiere!

Stock sale at Staltner & Fürlinger
Wow, now this is the perfect occasion for living-style queens to go crazy! The home décor-store Staltner & Fürlinger doesn’t call itself the “world of the most beautiful fabrics” for no reason, because it really does have extraordinary curtain and furniture fabrics ranging from Fortuny to Josef Frank, and also wallpapers and living decorations. Which means the sale and small flea market this weekend is worth a detour to the 9th district, tempting us with exquisite remnant pieces starting at 5 euros and even entire rolls from 30 euros, also pre-sewn curtains, nice cushions and decorative braids, lamps and very cosy plaids.

Bread Festival „Kruste & Krume“
Realtors use it to make properties smell good, Joseph builds boutiques for it and slow food-ambassador Barbara van Melle even wrote a bestseller about it. Bread is definitely the hero of our everyday life! Today, a whole bakers day is dedicated to the crunchy food once again, this time at the Kursalon Hübner. During tastings, baking shows and bakery markets, around 20 bakery-heroes and heroines from different parts of Austria demonstrate fine craftsmanship and long-forgotten recipes. It can be enjoyed accompanied by ham, finest cheese and smoked fish – and Heinz Reithbauer is cooking soup that was created just for this occasion. Mhhhm!

Festival of Sparkles at Am Himmel
Now, this is a brief tutoring session of Austrian traditions: every first Sunday of lent, huge sparkling firs are being put up, encased artfully with wood and burned down together at dusk. Sparkling fire is what the celebration is called, ending winter and warming souls, usually in Vorarlberg. But this year the traditional group “Funken-Zunft Gaißau” is visiting Vienna and put up a 14-meter-high (!) wooden tower at Am Himmel. Kindling is at around 19:00, additionally, you can enjoy delicious and savory cheese “Knöpfle” and listen to brass music. Tip: use public transportation to get there!

Jess Murphy cooking at Charlie P’s
Around St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th, everything turns a little green and jolly in the city. This year that is also true in a culinary sense: because thanks to the Irish national holiday, one of the best female chefs of Ireland will be cooking in Vienna. Jess Murphy was actually born in New Zealand, but now runs the well-known “Kai Café and Restaurant” in Irish Galway, together with her husband. That is also the region, where the goodies come from, which she will be using to create a 5-course-meal at Charlie P’s today: smoked food from Cork, crabs from Connemara and lamb from the hills along the coast. Yummy!

Alpine Garden-opening
Actually very sad, that the Alpine Garden at the Belvedere is languishing in obscurity next to the (additionally freely accessible) Botanic Garden. Because the more than 2,500 square meter big area with thousands of different plants from all over the world is definitely worth a visit. On the one hand because there are no mountains in Vienna and therefore also no alpine flora and on the other hand because many of the old cultivated and wild plants can’t be found in nature anymore, because they are endangered. From now on it is open again after the winter break – perfect for a Sunday walk!

Day of the District Museums
This day is an annual must-go in the calendar, because you rarely get the opportunity to experience the Viennese soul and its dusty neighborhood-secrets like they are shown in the Viennese District Museums. The motto this year is Viennese municipal housing, with the euphoric subtitle “light in the apartment, sun in the heart!” ;-) In Leopoldstadt, Uwe Mauch will be reading from his book “Stiege 8 /Tür 7”, in Simmering pictures of the refugee village Macondo in the 11th district are presented and in the 14th district it’s all about old “Bassena” apartments. Special program in all districts. And of course free!

Affliction – Fighting Ebola
Not a pleasant topic, but worth seeing! The documentary “Affliction” from Peter Casaer provides an insight into the work of “Doctors without Borders” during the Ebola-outbreak in West Africa. The camera team had unlimited access to the teams and could therefore also capture very difficult moments. Especially moving are the histories and fates of the sick, also subject of the film are the fear of the people and the impacts of quarantine. Rent-examination
Great service and maybe an opportunity to safe a lot of money long-term: from today on even non-members can have their rent examined at the Mietervereinigung (“Tenants Association”) Vienna. Because 90 percent of all apartment-rents in old buildings are set too high! In the course of a “Rent Week”, rent-experts are checking the respective rental rates and advising on possibilities and risks of a potential lawsuit. By the way, almost all past lawsuits have been won. All you need to bring is your rental agreement, no need to sign up for an appointment. First come, first served!

Vienna from above
Our beloved city, regarded from a bird’s eye view: a new exhibition at the Wien Museum presents the oldest, biggest and most famous plans, panoramas and models. Rare thematic maps, paintings and historic photographs with city images allow a fairly unfamiliar view of the city. Additionally, different viewpoints of the city are being highlighted – ranging from the St. Stephen’s Cathedral to the Kahlenberg and the present-day Hochhaus. And you can also learn something: for example what Vienna looked like during the Turkish siege. The whole city at a single glance – interesting!

Spring opening at the MuseumsQuartier
Hooray, springtime has officially started and at the coming weekend it’s finally time for the clocks to change for summertime! A must of the hopefully soon warm season is definitely for the MQ to bring out the new Enzis – this year the relaxing furniture pieces will be colored summer-like “twinni-green”. And today’s the day, to mark the occasion you can chill out on the Enzis and listen to the first (free) courtyard-concert: “NIHILS” are providing for chill, electronic alternative pop at the main courtyard of the MQ. By the way, the three musicians from Tyrol became well known for their awesome dance-hymn “Help Our Souls”.

Heartache is an asshole!
Whoever only knows Senna Gammour as a former lead singer of the Popstars-winning group Monrose, has completely slept through the last social media-years. By now Frankfurt-born Senna Gammour and her big mouth have turned into some kind of women’s representative 2.0. For many girls “Sister Senna” is like a virtual best friend they can have a good cry with. Today her first live-show “Liebeskummer ist ein Arschloch” (“Heartache is an asshole!”) is premiering in Austria. During the show the model blonde tells us with a twinkle in her eye exactly what we don’t want to hear – the vicious truth about relationships.

The idea is not new, but it definitely works: Georg Heinz and Clemens Hollerer sell furniture made from the wood of discarded Indonesian boats. Apparently, the Indonesian fishermen are into happy colors, which don’t look weatherworn but actually very pretty. The “ocean wood” is being upcycled directly in Indonesia and made into furniture ranging from table to book shelf and then shipped to Vienna. There, the stylish and (obviously!) outdoor-fit boat furniture is available at a showroom at the former carriage house in the 14th district. That Julia Wojta makes incredibly wonderful cakes has been well known ever since she created the city’s best cake pops under the label “Julie Pop Bakery”.
