"Heya Girls!"
Great cinema beneath the stars! At the moment as soon as it becomes dark the projectors start running on rooftops (main library), in castles (Neugebäude) or on squares (city hall, Volxkino) in Vienna. But from this week on the most beautiful open air cinema hall of the city can be found at the Augartenspitz. In the romantic garden of the Film Archive more classics, more premieres and more specials then ever before will be presented: all in all 67 cinema nights will be happening organized by the Viennale together with the Film Archive. Even before the official starts in cinemas you can see the cool gangster film “Baby Driver” with Lily James and a fascinating documentary about Whitney Houston. And because this summer’s motto is “The good life”, there will also be tons of events for free in the garden: cooking workshops, concerts, lectures about alternative living. By the way, before and after the films you can enjoy the organic delicacies from the “Grünstern garden kitchen”. This is how I like summer in the city!

Freihausviertel-Festival
No more staying at home, today it’s time to join the crowd! At the biggest street festival of the city, the Schleifmühlgasse between Wienzeile and Operngasse turns into an open-air party zone for three days. The street will be closed off for cars and there and at the neighboring Mühlgasse and Heumühlgasse you can find culinary delicacies from “Zweitbester” to “Vollpension”. Additionally, 16 live concerts – ranging from the Zuckerwatte Combo with their 60ies sound to the French chansons from Ménage à troi. And when it eventually becomes to late for outside, you can keep shaking at the Roxy – everything at free entry!

24-hour-challenge against hunger
Cool Caritas-action with a serious background: today at Mariahilfer Straße a balloon will be ascending every 10 seconds – because it’s every 10 seconds that a child dies of starvation. The “Challenge against hunger” will take 24 hours, numerous celebrities like actress Ruth Brauer or Opera Ball-organizer Maria Großbauer and many volunteers will help with the balloons all through the night. Additionally, there will be lots of live concerts, changing every half hour and ranging from Agnes Palmisano & Paul Gulda to Wiener Brut and the Italian women’s choir All’ Arrabbiata. Join in!

Mrs. and Mr. BERT and their “arge möbel” are a central hub for the local furniture handicrafts. Their goal: to interconnect producers and to bring the sometimes very well hidden furniture treasures to light. Today their two-day summer-furniture-exhibition opens near main train station, with regionally manufactured furniture and lamps from 9 small workshops. Part of it are for example k.Roh MOEBEL and Sitzfläche – all producers will be attending as well, talking about their creative work and answering questions. So: marvel at furniture, sip cocktails and enjoy the summer.

Creative rustling in a forest of pages: for two years now, the New Design University in St. Pölten has been offering a university course on contemporary book design. And since it is an extra-occupational course, the participants come from very different fields ranging from architecture to German studies and landscaping. Which is also reflected in the creatively designed final assignments of this year’s graduates, because their approaches are incredibly different. At the gallery Lia Wolf 17 of the book projects are now displayed, perfect for print design-fans! Vernissage is today.

Asteroid Day at the MNH
A horror scene like in Spielberg’s Armageddon: on June 30th 1908 a small asteroid hit Siberia and the explosion with its energy of several hundreds of nuclear bombs (!) destroyed 2.000 square meters of uninhabited territory. Since then, more than a hundred years have gone by and similar catastrophes coming from space have not happened. But should we be afraid of asteroids? That is a central question at today’s Asteroid Day at the Museum of Natural History – hopefully with comforting answers ;-) Today’s program includes films, discussions and guided tours through the biggest collection of meteors in the world.

The thing with the 10th birthday is regarded just as relaxed as everything at this location: it was actually already in December, but celebrating is not as much fun during the winter. But it is even better now and that for ten days! The super pleasant hang-out place at Schönbrunner Straße has put together a nice program, which will be inaugurated today with art in the garden, a hammock-island and happy-go-lucky music. On Monday, there will be a Maker-exhibition , Wednesday is artists’ day and on Thursday there will be audio-cinema in beach chairs. For werkzeugH is a jolly good fellow – for many years to come!

Two especially pretty shops, united for two days: a whole lot of NEAT-accessories from the second district will come flying to the Paperbird-shop in the third district for a summer pop up. The fine paper-things and writing utensils from Teresa Scheicher will be joined by minimalistic jewelry and bag creations from Maria Andrea Lems. Both of them have style and a broad sense for reduced and detailed designs. Picnic at Cobenzl
Very nice weekend-feast on the green grass! The Café Cobenzl, which was just recently woken up from its deep slumber, now also offers picnics. For the event, various market and food stands are put up to fill up your borrowed picnic basket with anything that makes you full and happy and with which you can then wander off onto the grass. Chilled wine from the neighboring vineyard Weingut Cobenzl, picnic blankets and a DJ line up are, of course, part of the event as well. And a service, which looks out for the grass to stay clean and pretty. Oh wow, just great!

Smartopera reloaded
Another novelty for smartphone users (when will there finally be an app for ironing?) – now you can help create an opera! During a 45-minute-long musical theater-performance at the Werk X you can use your smartphone to interactively compose, conduct and direct. All you need is (obviously!) your own up-to-date smartphone, where you can install the app that is necessary in order to be able to participate. The app will then lead you through the smart opera: during the performance you can see instructions, sounds and colors, which will influence the course of the opera. Exciting!

In a book that was published at the beginning of the year, 45 adolescents with a migration background show 45 of “their” spots in Vienna. From now on, impressive black-and-white photographs from the book are displayed in an exhibition, which lets you take a look at Vienna from a different perspective. For example the Heustadlwasser, where Lisa was once woken up by a deer, or the DC Tower that Bashir already dreamt of as a kid in Afghanistan, or the AKH - Hospital, where Lejla and Feride like to spend their time – but which is definitely missing a beach chair on the roof.

Once again this year, it rings in the month of July with a great program, today two grand dames will be performing at the State Opera: Dee Bridgewater will present her new, very personal album “Memphis”, with which she celebrates the American blues and R&B classics of her hometown Memphis. Wonderful! And Madeleine Peyroux is not any less impressing: she sings charismatically, gently and relentlessly. Double-wow!

And that is exactly the plan: product designer Sebastian Leitinger only has high quality basics manufactured for his label, which are produced as locally as possible – and whose design is pure and independent of the season. First coup: a soft, all-weather, awesome unisex everyday shoe for 180 euros. Until fall the product range will be expanded by one more shoe model and small leather products like bags. Sometimes the seriously hip locations come to the city very silently. Without any fuss and press coverage. Just like the newly opened luna, where you don’t even really know what it actually is: café, flower shop, trend center? But one thing is clear: it looks great here! And it is owned by highly likeable people, who come from a completely different field, in the back of the building they actually have their own film company. You can come here to drink coffee, eat porridge in the morning, buy succulents and exotic plants, read books, talk and repot your plants for free in front of the place. So fine – welcome to the urban jungle!
