"Heya Girls!"
This is even more true in the Corona year 2020 than usual: Life writes the most incredible stories. Sometimes it is a comedy, sometimes a tragedy – and this year's Viennale film programme is just as colourful and versatile. Austria's largest international film event will showcase local films such as Evi Romen's directing debut “Hochwald” as well as an overview of the film work of the great Christoph Schlingensief or “Nomadland”, for which Chloé Zhao won the Golden Lion in Venice. Quite educational to dive into foreign fates, relationships and realities – but hard times for cineastes! The Viennale, with well over 100 films in 11 days, all but forces us to spend day and night at the cinema. By the way: Since the seating capacity of the cinemas had to be greatly reduced, the Viennale will be showing in five more cinemas in addition to its five classic venues this year.

Wishing you a flickering week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Manu Delago
No pushing around of shows, rather arrange a seated pandemic concert series: that's how the WUK does it, and at the top of the line-up is Grammy-nominated composer and hang virtuoso Manu Delago. His solo “Mono Desire” has a million clicks on YouTube and in London he plays with stars like Björk. His largest live show to date, “Circadian”, is an acoustic journey through sleep cycles, from REM to light sleep and deep sleep to an abrupt awakening – inspired by Delago's personal experiences with sleep deprivation during his numerous international tours.

 Natalie Neumaier
Natalie Neumaier: Viola Volando
Is often separated, here it comes together: Natalie Neumaier combines text and drawings, places them on top of each other, crisscrossed, instead of separating them on several pages. In this way, mixed media collages bring together what belongs together for the artist – the idea and its source of inspiration. The exhibition “Viola Volando” shows her drawings, notes, and texts immortalised on books, paper, and pictures, because Neumaier uses the stone of impetus for a thought directly as a base. This unusual combination can be seen free of charge from today.

Writing at the café
The babble of voices, clattering dishes and strange faces: that's how a coffee house sounds and feels. As a meeting place for both the young and the old, it can also be an atmospheric place for inspiration. Coach Beatrice Floh's writing workshop uses this atmosphere to gain impulses and new impressions for the next story. These can be snapped up fragments of conversation, farewell scenes or a conversation with the waiter. The exchange with others over a coffee or observing the comings and goings might bring about the flash of inspiration.

Winter Jackets Disco
For a safe alternative to tight club nights, you like to dress extra warm. At the Winter-Jackets Disco the dress code is lined coats and down jackets, the party will take place in the park of the former Sophienspital at the “Wild im West”. The disco folk will be entertained with house music at a neighbour-friendly volume, with several well distributed speakers providing a good sound. Here, too, punch, mulled wine and hot lemonades should only be consumed at the sitting areas of tavern benches. They are perfect for swaying to the music while chillaxing anyway ;-)

 Little Elements
Little Element
The sound of Little Element makes you feel all nostalgic because it brings back the summer. That’s because front woman Lisa Aumaier discovered her musical style between sand dunes while vacationing by the sea: dream-pop with an electronic touch, relaxed guitar riffs and sitar melodies gently wash away gloomy thoughts. The reggae elements and the enigmatic vocals also take you on vacation while listening. The musician doesn't need notes, she composes by ear and feeling. The result is an honest sound with happy vibes that have a lasting effect.

Season Start at Eislaufverein
On to the black ice with the ice princesses! Starting this weekend, you can once again whirl nostalgically around your own axis on sharpened skates in the Vienna Ice Skating Club. Against the romantic backdrop of the Vienna Konzerthaus, gliding over into the cold season is not that difficult ;-) There will be no extra events at the start this year, but – and much more importantly – a corona concept: you don’t have to wear a mask on the ice and to avoid long queues, a new online ticket store has been built. Ice dreams will thus come true this winter, too, after all.

 MAK
MAK-Day 2020: Luxury
Especially during Corona you can feel it: demands and needs are changing constantly. Tomorrow, certain things taken for granted could be a luxury, other products will become everyday objects through technical innovation. The free special guided tours at the MAK-Day on the state holiday show exactly that. (Regular admission is also reduced by more than 50 percent). The “Luxury Tour” includes rooms and exhibitions on Viennese style and Asian spatial concepts. In “Hierarchy and Status” bourgeois design competes with individual modernity.

Buschenschank in Residence
Holiday programme! You’d like to follow the wonderful Viennese winemaker Jutta Ambrositsch-Kalchbrenner anywhere. During the last years, she played at a deserted traditional Heurigen, quasi in the Heurigen-heartland Grinzing, namely the Heurigen of family Rauscher, also in Grinzing, which had existed since 1954 and was closed in 2014. They’re open this weekend, with all the must-haves like snug and comfy seating areas, regional culinary treats and a few of the finest wines, of course. Due to Corona, you have to make a reservation.

Knitting for the Gruft
Needle tamers and knitting ninjas, you are needed! In order to give some warmth in the approaching cold, the Phönix Handarbeitsboutique calls for people to do some knitting and crocheting. Beanies, sweaters, socks, mittens and scarves are collected and handed over to homeless people in the Gruft at the end of November. Today is the deadline in the store, Katia Jessich takes delivery of the self-made clothes. If you want to donate not only woolly warmth but also some spiritual warmth, you might like to enclose a card with a kind word or a nice thought on it.

Old Jewish Vienna
The waltz-obsessed Vienna of the good old days, all the clichés perfect for tourism that still characterise the image of our city at home and abroad today: they were invented by Jewish authors – Schnitzler and Altenberg, Stefan Zweig and Joseph Roth, and cast in sounds by Jewish musicians like Johann Strauss and Hermann Leopoldi. The production “Süßes Mädl, blaue Donau” dedicates an evening on stage to them. Text and sound take you on a foray through Jewish Vienna. An evening about the Viennese soul, not typically Viennese or Jewish, but both at the same time.

The intestinal-brain axis
Our food plays an incredibly crucial part for the body. Probably even more crucial than previously thought: studies suggest that intestinal bacteria (microbiome) “talk” directly to brain cells and thus influence our mind, meaning our memories. There are even indications of a connection with dementia. Doctor Berit Hippe can explain exactly what is going on in the background and how the microbiome influences the psyche – in positive and negative ways. For curious people at home: the lecture is also available as an online webinar via Zoom.

Wunderl Pop-up in Vienna
Oioioi, shoe connoisseurs get all giddy with happiness when they hear the word Wunderl! Because the chic shop carries wonderfully pretty designer shoes and handbags. The only downside for us Viennese ladies: the shoe paradise’s home is near Wiener Neustadt. But: Wunderl will now come into town to us for a pop-up for two days and he comes bearing tempting goods. So, best shoe picks then, dear ladies, from mules to pumps, from high heels to loafers, from Tod's to Jimmy Choo, from new arrivals to outlet bargains. Selleny's
A long time was spent renovating (while the hotel was open), now the all-new Hilton at the Stadtpark is almost finished. Selleny's on the ground floor has already opened: During the day, the restaurant named after the Viennese globetrotter and builder of the city park is a café, in the evening it turns into a bar. The furnishings are reminiscent of designs by Otto Wagner and Josef Hoffmann – looks elegant, but still quite homey. The cosy boxes are especially nice. On the menu you will find light dishes such as Jerusalem artichoke pockets, bowls or roasted cauliflower. Be sure to try: the signature coffees!
