editorial

"Heya Girls!"
All the holidaymakers are back, my email accounts are overflowing again and from one day to the next there's a lot going on in the city again. Meaning: as of today, your favourite newsletter will navigate you through city life again! And with “Open House Vienna”, the cultural scene is getting off to a big and colourful start into autumn. This is especially nice – for we get to stick our noses into other people's flats and knock on strangers’ doors unannounced. Over 50 (often private) buildings in Vienna that are otherwise not accessible open their doors this weekend – and allow us a look behind the facades. Open House shows buildings with a special history, exciting architecture or an interesting concept. This year, for example, you can visit the vivihaus, which is made of 90 percent wood, straw and clay. Or the beautiful art nouveau house by Max Fabiani (photo) in Ungargasse. Sightseeing in your own city!

Wishing you an exciting week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

 Kinga Jakabffy
Parallel Vienna
Spectacular young and established art in an unusual, empty building: the art fair takes place in the former Semmelweis clinic, which is named after the doctor and obstetrician Ignaz Semmelweis. Emerging artists as well as established artists from home and abroad were invited to engage with the building and its history. The result: 170 rooms of the former maternity clinic will be occupied by more than 600 artistic positions. A Kowanz homage can be seen as well as new pictures by Kinga Jakabffy on the subject of self-determination and abortion.

Amateur & Friends
My, how time flies! The fair-fashion label Amateur, founded in 2007, actually celebrates its 15th birthday already. And that's why designer Birgit Rampula invites you to a 3-day pop-up with friends and a party, with music, drinks and birthday cake. In addition to the complete Amateur collection (including the latest samples), you can also buy ceramics and jewellery by Anna Riess, try on fashion by Kamen and Katrin Mayer, slip into T-shirts and jumpers by Ferrari Zöchling or marvel at the new active wear by Margaret&Hermione. Well then: Happy Birthday!

World Press Photo 22
Press photos depict the world with all its terrible, beautiful and terribly beautiful events. For 67 years, the World Press Photo Foundation has chosen one photo each year that best describes the past year, with many other iconic snapshots also receiving awards. This year, the 65,000 entries were judged according to a new jury procedure that is intended to ensure even more global diversity. First place this year went to Canadian Amber Bracken: Her photo tells the story of 215 indigenous children buried in a mass grave on a school campus in Canada.

Fire-eaters and jugglers, graffiti artists and entertainers. A magical charge that 100 national and international street artists spray all over Karlsplatz. At the Vienna Street Art Festival, the Buskers Festival, they will demonstrate their skills for three days. Acrobatic, fun-loving and free: Both the festival and the workshops on offer (such as juggling or soap bubbles) are free of charge. 25hours meets Markterei: in the park
Let's hope the weather holds because this food binge calls for dry weather! The Markterei is taking place in the park in front of the 25hours Hotel – with market stalls, street food and bars. Between organic chips, fusion kitchen sandwiches, grilled food from Jacobo and crispy, delicious churros from Sazon, no foodie dreams will remain unfulfilled. What's more, you can do your weekend shopping right away: delicatessen from smoked fish to slow food bread from the organic Mauracher bakery will be on sale. Plus, live acts and then an after-party in the 25hours attic. Cool!

Art on the fence
The Börse quarter is getting colourful and creative today, as the Börsepark is turning into an open-air museum for a whole day. More than 75 artists place their works on a specially erected construction fence around the park, ranging from watercolours to abstract painting to photography – resulting in 237m of art market! So you can stroll through the park, meet artists, check out art, buy art and win art. The open-air exhibition is accompanied by music and dance. The street food is provided by Churros Don Diego, the paella by Café La Naranja.

 Julia Geiter / Franzi Kreis
Sargfabrik Open Air
Why have so few stories and songs been passed on through time in which femininity is allowed to define itself? In her solo programme “Spinnerin”, Julia Lacherstorfer will demonstrate that it is entirely possible for traditional Austrian folk music to have a female voice. At the double concert under the open sky, she will be supported by former street artist Alicia Edelweiss. Whether art song, weird folk or quirky pop – the freaky Austrian-British performer swings between many musical styles, but her music is always one thing: intense.

Water-Fish & Ship-City
Stories about fish, fishing, navigation and dying on the water: a whole day of cycling today – from the Marchfeld Canal via the Danube Island to the Albernen Hafen. An excursion in the footsteps of sailors' stories, which you normally do not really associate with Vienna. There is a visit to the 1st Vienna Fishing Museum, an exploration of the Life Sterlet Project where it’s all about the smallest of the six Danube sturgeons. And at the end, the enchanted Cemetery of the Nameless is visited. The meeting point for the bike tour (approx. 45 km) will be announced at registration.

Open House at the Carriage Museum
One of the most important carriage collections in the world celebrates its centenary. Obviously, it has to be extra special! That's why the Carriage Museum at Schönbrunn invites visitors to an open house today with free entry and an emperor-worthy programme. A tour through the restoration workshops, a walk through the uniform depot (my, what's that?) or a visit to the Sisi Trail, where you can marvel at the imperial wasp waist on her famous black court dress – the perfect occasion to immerse yourself in aristocratic worlds for an afternoon and relish in broadening your historical horizons.

Vienna Coffee Festival
Anyone can make coffee? Far from it, say coffee aficionados. And they are organising a festival where you can devote yourself entirely to the black gold! Today, in the Marx Halle, you can sample exciting varieties from small, local roasting companies such as Röstwerkstatt or Süssmund Kaffee, for instance. You can also experiment with different brewing methods, chat with people about everything and the beans or serve creative coffee cocktails. Supporting programme: many live concerts, food trucks and a barista challenge with prize money to be won. A real spectacle!

 Lillis Ballroom
Trial dancing at the Danube Canal
Lillis Ballroom is probably one of the most unusual dance schools in Vienna. The barrier-free Latin dance studio deliberately includes all the senses in their teaching – and for this they may sometimes even blindfold you for a wild bachata move and explain kizomba steps in such a way that you can dance them just by hearing them. Starting today, the studio launches its autumn programme with ten new courses and a trial period. Whether Queer Tango, Latin Fusion or Salsa – in the U-Bahn arch at Spittelau, all courses can be tried out for a fortnight for only 5€.

MQ Vienna Fashion Week
Today it's haute couture time at the MuseumsQuartier ;-) Fashion Week is now underway and that means fashion shows by local and international designers, pop-up stores (would be mean if you were only allowed to look!) and fashion events! For the 14th time, countless labels show in the big tent in front of the MuseumsQuartier that fashion doesn't just exist so that you don't have to walk around naked. A total of 34 designers will present their collections on the catwalk. The opening show starts today, and on Wednesday there’s even “free admission” to the Fashion Night

Dead at 102 – enviable, one would think. But not in Sardinia, Eva Rossmann's new adopted home and the setting for her latest crime novel. Here one wishes “A kent'ànnos! – may you live to be a hundred” and it works! So it’s all the more shocking when a 102-year-old Sardinian woman dies and her best friend even claims it was not a natural death. A clear case for the Viennese journalist Mira Valensky and her friend Vesna Krainer. Eva Rossmann will tell of the thrilling and bizarre investigations at her reading today at 19:00.

Floating Concerts
Chugging along the Danube at sunset, listening to the finest music while savoury delicacies caress your palate. Sounds like something out of a cheesy tearjerker film? But it’s actually happening on the beautiful Old Danube – on boat islands that look like water lilies from above and were built from recycled PET bottles. Today, Vienna Strings create an atmospheric evening full of classical highlights and Viennese charm – from “Water Music to the Danube Waltz”. Tomorrow the ensemble “Elies” will bring Greek flair to the water.

Sonnwend Bootcamp
Make off! Women like to steer clear of testosterone-heated gyms where men lift dumbbells that are far too heavy. So it's all the nicer that weight training now also takes place in the open air! In the middle of the Helmut Zilk Park in Sonnwend quarter, the Mariahilfer 76 fitness studio holds its “Sonnwend Bootcamp” every Tuesday – a mix of strength, endurance and skill exercises. You don't need any previous experience, just slip into your favourite fitness outfit and off you go! By the way, if you're not quite convinced yet, you can check it out first for 5 euros.

 Floriana Cangiano
Flo Cangiano “Brave Ragazze”
She is considered one of the most outstanding voices in Southern Italy. Floriana Cangiano – alias FLO – comes from Naples, sings her own women's songs and interprets songs by other “good girls”, great singers from Italy and South America who have unjustly fallen into oblivion. “Brave Ragazze” is a passionate reflection on the many faces of women: the mother, the warrior, the woman in love, the artist, the woman born in a man's body. The songs trace the extraordinary lives of female singers between great success and great poverty, great courage and great loneliness.

Gregor Sailer: Unseen Places
For Gregor Sailer, who does not shy away from trips to the Arctic at -50° for his work, a place cannot be extraordinary enough. The Tyrolean photographer travels to remote, inhospitable parts of the world, Potemkin villages, sealed-off territories or restricted military areas. Sailer's photos are deserted, the buildings on them often look like sculptures. Whether climate change, political conflicts or an excessive need for security – Sailer's impressive pictures reveal the dynamics that lead to the existence of these places, whether in the Californian Mojave Desert or in Qatar

Wine Battle
To the wine glasses, get set, go! This is the motto of the Handwerk Restaurant from today, as the Wine Battle event series is starting a new season. The September theme: monastery wines. While chef de cuisine Christoph Stiglitz provides culinary delights with a 4-course menu, sommelier Josef Maria Schuster compares wines from Europe's monasteries with Austrian monastery wines. Not knowing which wine comes from where, the participants decide on the winner – who is crowned with the Wine Battle Trophy as the grand finale of the evening.

48er Tandler Donaustadt
They are creative, the 48ers, as you can see from the witty slogans on Viennese dustbin lorries. The latest coup of the Department for Waste Management: a huge new vintage market. In a super-modern, large hall in Donaustadt they sell everything that’s far too beautiful to throw away. Collector's items, curiosities and practicalities. The items were either handed in as beautiful used goods, are unclaimed found objects or old furniture from the city of Vienna. The selection is really large – from Gmundner tableware to little baroque tables. And all of that at great prices ;-)

Pink Rabbit @ Mooons
The Mooons Hotel opposite the Hauptbahnhof is situated higher than most of the buildings in the inner districts – so from the roof you have a sensational view over Vienna. Ideal for a rooftop bar. If you want to spend the last cosy summer evenings in an unusual location, you should try to fit in a visit to the Pink Rabbit high above the hotel. The rooftop is small and comfy, there are fine drinks, a tiny bar food menu and a killer view. On one side are the beautiful old houses of the city centre, on the other you can see the ultra-modern district around the train station. Cool!
