editorial

"Heya Girls!"
Ladies & Gents, the new Bible has just arrived! No, not the one with the 10 commandments and baby Jesus ;-) – the other one, which hoards the top 100 newest shops & restaurants in Vienna between its pages every year. There are no rules and restraints in there, but plenty of inspirations and ideas where you could go, what to explore, what to do, feast on, shop and what to give as gifts. The timing is perfect, in just eight weeks Christmas is knocking on the door already, so it’s time to reflect which of the exciting “Wiener Entdeckungen (8)”  ("Viennese discoveries") to put under the golden pine cones for kith and kin. And there’s another special treat in the book: the top 14 day spas in Vienna! A bit of luxury-wellness in between can’t hurt, after all. And while I’m sitting here, thinking and writing about this, a half day at the Sans Souci including a massage is joining – inspired by book-research – the baby-blue cashmere sweater by l’Adresse and the yummy Linzeraugen from Zuckerkringel-Kekswerkstatt on the wish list. Have fun, my dears, with browsing, reading and buying!

Wishing you an exploratory week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Fashion Breakfast on national holiday
Usually, fashion-enthusiast Silvia Dollinger cruises to private homes with mobile clothes rails and favours hen parties with fine Italo-fashion. (Yes, a bit like the Tupperware ladies used to ;) But once or twice a month – like today! – she hosts an exclusive fashion breakfast at her little boutique in the 22nd district. There you can try on the newest cuddly sweaters, ponchos, pants and accessories to your heart’s content (everything’s quite wearable, there’s a lot in grey, burgundy, and winter white currently), feast on sparkling wine, coffee, and cake – and yes, shop! Up to size 52!

Tasting: Die Einmacherin at Q19
There’s a very good reason to postpone your weekend shopping until today. And – no matter what district you live in – to get it done at Q19 in the 19th district. Because today, preservation-lady (“Die Einmacherin”) herself is somewhere in the deli department of Interspar, inviting you to try her newest spread creations. Crunchy bread is served with French rillettes with beef and port wine, pork and juniper but also bacon jam (sounds strange but is actually delicious). If addiction hits you instantly, buy a few glasses. Or get some tips on how to DIY!

Poems of the Daily Madness
Now, it’s not often that CitySpotterGirls is actually at a loss for words, but it’s hard to find the right ones when it comes to describing the first opera by Claudia Bosse, Günther Auer and the Theatercombinat. What happens there it totally avant-garde, exciting, a bit disturbing and certainly not a “romantic light opera” as the radical combo would have you believe. BUT on the other hand, it’s not really possible to set current world happenings (including hate, crime & politics) to a sweet tune. Therefore, it’s haling arias, digi-sound and recitatives. And somehow, it’s cool! Trailer here.

Arnold´s Pop Up Store
All this mourning the loss of the former super-Sneakerboutique Paar in Siebensterngasse has got to end once and for all! Sniff. Fortunately, there’s a new Happy Socks & Pingpong-Rucksack Popup-store at just the same address that will provide a fashionably good mood! CitySpotterGirl is especially keen on the socks, since she proudly and passionately makes sure every day that her socks meticulously fit her overall outfit, whether that be socks sporting gaudy floral patterns, tattoopopart, dots, prison stripes and other cult-sock-stuff. There’s also cool special-editions and gift boxes. Until the end of the year!

Vienna’s first pole dance show
Please put away all your prejudices and clichés for a moment. Because it’s only in bad films that professional pole dance is associated with brainless come-ons to men and tasteless striptease. It’s rather considered a highly exhausting und physically intensive kind of fitness and sport, in which you defy gravity like it’s nothing and toughen your muscles, all while performing breathtaking upside down-rotation tricks. How stylish and elegant this can look is demonstrated today by professional single-, double-, and team performers from AUT + GER. Spectacular show!

CitySpotterGirl’s resolution to try at least one completely new thing every month could enter into the next round today. The enticing term is hand lettering, the workshop is being held by the wonderful graphic-duo “Books-Ink”. And the program is all about designing gaudy-beautiful lettering. No matter if for the next Xmas card or the bathroom sign – after a few exercises dedicated to all things writing, pen and technique, you can work your own creation towards completion, all while having coffee and sweets. New: Vienna’s biggest trampoline world
ump, jump, jump! Next time you feel like going through the roof with anger or joy, you can go do that in the 23rd district! Vienna’s biggest trampoline park just opened there – with turbo-like XXL-jumping tracks, ninja-obstacle-parkours, Cirque du Soleil-trampoline-wall and many other action-stations on over 1,000sqm! If you don’t feel like jumping up the wall spectacularly or do a few salti right away, just go freejumping or play trampoline basketball. Nice side-effect: the whole jump-yourself-into-balance-thing burns 1,000 calories per hour!

You can also get new ideas from pros like Patchworkgilde or Klöppelverein as well as from workshops. Pumpkin Feast & Farmer’s market
Here’s to hoping the weather will be nice once more at the weekend. Because pumpkin farmers from Styria are coming to Vienna. Up at the "Himmel" (heaven), in the meadow between Oktogon and the tree of life circle, the gusto-specialists will present all kinds of delicacies from the Styrian (culinary) delight regions, and so we can try our way through fine treats like pumpkin soup, pumpkin kraut, Vulkanland ham, pumpkin seed oil, and Schilcher-wines. And shopping, too, is on the order of the day (jams!) And if you want, you can already start carving Halloween pumpkins. Today live concert at 14:00!

Horror stories for the brave
Abandoned cemeteries, former execution sites, myths and facts – there’s plenty of eerily beautiful stories to tell in Vienna: Below Minoritenplatz, strangely interred skeletons were found. The Hofburg has long been haunted by a ghost who shows itself to the Habsburgs before their death. An aristocratic lady is under suspicion of having been a vampire. And the Plague Virgin, getting a bit long in the tooth, is thrown into hell non-stop. The thrilling guided tour through the 1st district looks at Vienna from a different point of view for a change!

Carolin Kebekus: AlphaPussy
She has won the German Comedy Prize for best comedienne five years in a row – for her ingenious, funny women’s power cabaret! The likable jester from Cologne is participating and fixes the balance between men and women with her AlphaPussy tour. Intense, charming, and like a bombshell. She’ll take to task the lousiest pick-up lines, as well as professionally young hipster-parents and the youtubisation of the Western world. So, dear Ladies, if you crave a bit of good mood in all this autumnal grey and drab: what are you waiting for?

Marianne Strobl
And again one of the really big ones who, unfortunately, disappeared relatively unsung into history: Marianne Strobl. Between 1894-1914, the exceptional Austrian photographer crawled into the Viennese sewage system and the Ötscher caves, among other things, and generally held her ground in the men’s world. Now there’s an exhibition dedicated to the pioneer in all things flashlight and industrial photography for the first time. You’ll see powerful pictures of construction sites, luxury hotels, psychiatric clinics and Semmering villas. Impressive!

Salon Albertina: Raffael Reinterpreted
Last year, Albertina had already invited visitors to an artistic-original dress-up-soirée which was about artist Egon Schiele and the 20s dress-code. Today, the fashion-theme is all about the current “Raffael” exhibition. In plain terms this means: Renaissance. But the real fun is trying to convert the raffaelesque clothing style and the aesthetic of the 15th/16th century into present time in a creative way. Apart from the costume contest, the “Renaissance” also offers a fashion show with living images and guided tours to the highlights. The best costumes will receive awards!

Halloween Dinner Palais Coburg
At Palais Coburg, you can enjoy the night to November 1st without blood but revelling in a fair amount of luxury, cultivating the Catholic-Irish custom at an eerily-beautiful four-course candlelight dinner deep down in the medieval casemate. The food options include fiery octopus tentacles, trumpets of the dead, and bloody turnips accompanying filet of Simmentaler beef or, and this is particularly original, “cold hand with shot”. The whole thrilling culinary jamboree is accompanied by some spooky-chilling Halloween soundtrack. Cool!

Yin Yoga and Sound
The best holiday-program and tough competition for the couch: today, you can practice relaxing Yin-Yoga-positions at Sattvayoga-Studio in the third district. The asanas are being held for up to three minutes, passively and without muscle strain, thus gently stretching the spine. This has a profound impact on the conjunctive tissue and the fascias, activating the meridians. And there you go, Chi is once again flowing as it should be! As an additional treat, yoga teacher Brigitte Tippl has brought singing bowls today for some balancing sound. Suitable for newbies too!

Dia de los Muertos
Nice concept: according to Mexican belief, the deceased visit from beyond the other side on November 1st, on the “Dia de los Muertos“, to celebrate a joyful reunion with the living. In Vienna, the Day of the Dead is celebrated today at WUK. There are an opulent-kitschy altar, offerings and flower tributes in remembrance of Eugenie Schwarzwald, a pioneer of girls’ education, who died 1940. But of course, amongst “pan de muerto”, skulls, margaritas and Paraguayan dances, you can also raise a glass to your own deceased loved ones. Beautiful custom!

10 Years “Suppe mit Sinn“
Starting today, spooning soup serves as good karma again! More than 200 top venues are once again participating in the relief effort of Wiener Tafel. 1 Euro per plate goes directly to people affected by poverty. Not only does this warm your own stomach but, more importantly, the solidary heart! Participating in Vienna are: Marco Simonis, Tian Bistro, hidden kitchen, suppito (nomen est omen ;) and many more. There’s really no excuse NOT to gourmandise Grießnockerl soup, mushroom soup or rice-noodle soup for a good purpose! Until December 31st!

Aesop
Finally the Australian cosmetic cult brand is also available in Austria! And in really classy fashion too, in the 20s art-deco ambience in the middle of the first district. The store’s centrepiece: a huge washstand where all the precious care products for skin, hair and body are presented. This is not a store where you just go in, grab a jar and leave; rather they make sure to advise each client individually, and test crèmes and soaps on them during a cup of tea and a hand consultation. They offer many face products (crèmes, serums and toners) but also perfumes, shampoos and gift sets. Really pretty and super-nice service!

Spelunke
Even though Vienna is still not located by the sea – we do have a harbour pub now! The brand-new restaurant at Danube Canal is still waiting for sailors but in the meantime, they’ve already tattooed the wall with sailor’s brides ;-) Just like Klee am Hanselteich, which is operated by the same captains, it’s all hip and fancy – from mossy-green leather chairs, to the designer wooden bar and the glass bubble-lamp. The menu is a somewhat wayward-creative mix from fish grilled on a stick to beef olives and “fake” veggie-Bolognese. There are cheaper lunch menus, at night you can anchor at the bar till all hours. Cool!
