"Heya Girls!"
Alright, dear women, it is finished. During the last months, I was writing something besides CitySpotterGirl – something that is really useful and looks damn good: a book about menstruation. Yeah, I know, not exactly our favourite topic. But “Das Buch der Tage” shows the monthly bleeding to you like you’ve never seen it before! The period is, as you can discover in this book, our default fountain of youth. The menstrual blood turns out to be an ingenious detox-program. The annoying PMS symptoms give us hints as to what may be wrong in our life. And: the book contains a wealth of interactive pages – a guided diary, questionnaires, mood boards. So it’s a book that you can help write. From 15 December, the book will be available in stores. As a thank you to you readers however, there’s a 1+1 sale before! If you order 2 books now (like, as a gift for your best friend, mum, or daughter), you get a twofer for a bargain price of 30 €! You can have a look at it at the web portal. Here we go ;-)

Wishing you a happy week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Das Buch der Tage. Subscription price for two books together 30 €. Sale valid until 13 December. Shipping starts after 15 December. Web

VinziRast-Christmas Market
If you are still looking for nice gifts that also serve a social purpose, you had best look in at VinziRast tomorrow. Like always, they have lots of high-quality and homelike stuff, made by refugees this time in the course of the VinziChance project. Like bags, backpacks, trays, apron, boxes, potholders, wooden toys, lavender bags, or Christmas decorations. All unique pieces and so cool that it knocks even Chistkind’s socks off. And on Tuesday (5 December) comedian Gerold Rudle will provide two hours of liberating laughter with “Ach du heilige …” (Oh holy …).

Show sewing at the Schau
Look at this, the most creative events are happening in the 15th district more and more often – just like this one: streetwear label vis a vis is presenting its new collection, and there will also be show-sewing for four days. By the designer herself, since the only 23-year-old Andrea Kerbler sews all pieces herself. The presentation includes the current autumn/winter collection, a selection of street couture and accessories, mainly in grey and olive, pepped up by smart accents in rose and green, all made from natural materials. By the way, the prices for these trendy pieces are creative too – it’s “pay what you want” ;-)

 Molly Darcy's
Schottenfest
Now in addition to all that glitter, Vienna will be also wrapped in checked patterns ;-) The reason: the Schottenfest! For five days, there will be Scottish and Irish parties at several venues, which aims to warm people up for the land in the north and its cultures. Plus, it’s about traditions, after all Vienna has its “Schotten” and a Schottenstift too – whose history is a topic at Molly Darcy’s today, by the way. In the evening, Irish folk rocker John Spillane will give a performance at Theater am Spittelberg, and the Final Wrap-Party is planned for Sunday night at the Heinz on Rudolfsplatz!

Sophia Kennedy
Lots of literature, plus an amazing singer who’s never been heard here before: At the Erich Fried days, after a lyric round table, a solo-concert by the equally wonderful Clara Luzia (18:00) and several readings, the American celebrated by the music world will play her first concert in Austria. For free! The young musician presents herself as a dramatic romanticist, as a wordplay artist and melody-master. In her songs, she travels from classical crooning to the soul-y R’n’B, from Frank Sinatra to Beyoncé. Better be there in time to get in! Listen in here.

 Textilgalerie / Marlene Gollner
Textilgalerie
Art from, on, and with textiles has mostly been treated as an orphan in the creative scene so far. Thinks Elisabeth Rössler, who’s been sharing her enthusiasm for it for a couple of years now. First as a teacher, then as operator of “sewing tents”, in which passersby could just start sewing spontaneously. Today, she opens a gallery for contemporary textile art. In workshops, she also teaches techniques like Shibori or tablet weaving. Tomorrow and during the upcoming week, there will also be a Christmas sale, with textiles, but also jewellery and bags.

WeihnachtsQuartier
Advent, Advent, business at the Christmas markets is content! Once again, WeihnachtsQuartier seduces us into spending money on the first Advent weekend. It offers 1,000 square metres of design and more than 100 artists, sales happen inside and it’s heated! So big bustle, but also tons of amazing gifts like sustainable bags, boxes & cases by “Said the fox”, charmingly fine ceramics by Beate Anna Hoy, or original stuff from the “Trash Design Manufaktur”. And cool “magdas Design”-things from the Caritas workshops for meaningful gift giving!

“Tasting Lower Austria”
Isn’t it convenient when the country comes to the city? For two days, Christmassy stuff from all of Lower Austria moves into Herrengasse. There’s a majestic Christmas tree in the atmospherically illuminated inner yard of Palais NÖ, and all the other Advent-ingredients are available in good supply as well: punch, hot mulled wine, glitter, and live-choirs ;-) Inside, in the show rooms, you’ll find culinary offers from quail’s egg to Wachau saffron, plus (art)-handicraft like fish fabrics or Waldviertel nacre design. Tonight, there’s also a dialect reading with accompanying harp music in the Rittersaal. Beautiful!

Unicorn cake-baking class
So far, CitySpotterGirl was able to avoid the rampant unicorn epidemic. But this cake really got us here at the office. My goodness, it’s so cute! And not even that difficult for DIYers: Pastry chef and blogger “Baking Charlotte” demonstrates in her course today how to make the prettiest and kitschiest unicorn cake yourself with a few simple tricks – from the ideal cake dough to the garnishing with different kinds of tulle and the ruching of the pink-and-purple mane. After the course, we’ll all ride home with our very own first unicorn oeuvre, I promise!

Finnish & Swedish Christmas Bazaar
Wienin Suomi-koulun joulumyyjäiset vuosittain Klosterneuburgissa!  No idea what this means, but in any case, today a really nice Finnish Christmas bazaar is taking place, with design from the far North, books and Finnish treats. And Finnish Father Christmas has also announced his visit! Today’s Swedish Christmas bazaar is also super neat and is spreading Christmas cheer at Ministry of Health’s building: Saint Lucy plus candlelit-crown, traditional songs, real “Glögg”-hot mulled wine and Swedish Christmas decorations – of course also for purchasing!

Akademie Winter Market
Every year again, the Academy of Fine Arts presents itself as super creative and slightly chaotic for three days and transforms the former Semperdepot into a Christmas market. You won’t find normal stuff here, but instead unique items by prospective artists and designers. Plus, there will be bands rocking the courtyard, today there’s heart-and body warming African drumming with “D’rum Bock”, Afro dancing skills can be perfected in a workshop before. Too wild? They also offer jewellery-making or the production of ecological lip balm and Christmassy shower gel ;-)

Parallel Hotel
For a few years now, art fair “Parallel Vienna” has repurposed empty buildings into galleries, most recently old Freud-Uni in 3rd district was converted into a temporary show room. Now, a smaller exhibition was organised: its location is inner city-hotel “Schweizerhof” which has been abandoned since the beginning of 2016 – one of these hotels that always remain somewhat hidden to us Viennese people. Now the new art-pop-up breathes new life into the deserted rooms, different artist present their work in 12 hotel rooms, among them Swede Minda Andren, who lives in Vienna, or native of Bregenz Katherina Olschbaur.

bluem Mondays
Mondays can be so hard! That’s why nutritionist Andrea Vaz-König and body-therapist Daniela Razocher have come up with something great for the start of the working week: a somewhat different business breakfast for women. Their credo: looking after yourself and your body is the basis for any successful entrepreneurial activities. Every first Monday of the month at bluem im museum, a breakfast table is set for the participants, special shared moments with short inputs and preparing nurturing meals together provides strength on all levels.

Carla Bruni
Former première Dame, now on tour again: Carla Bruni cuts a fine figure as singer as well. The smart French lady – who used to be a popular model – is giving one of her few concerts tonight at Konzerthaus. Her current and fifth total album “French touch” consists of a melange of pop, chanson and folk. The songs are without exception cover-versions, representing personal treasure of a sentimental journey into her own past, for example Lou Reeds “A Perfect Day” or “Miss You” by Rolling Stones. And who ever knew that Madame Bruni-Sarkozy is an AC/DC fan! Proof here.

Rappers read Rappers
Wonderfully un-Christmas-like program before Nikolo comes riding in tomorrow: Today marks the last edition of the year of “Rappers read Rappers” at Ateliertheater. Five male and female rappers are performing texts of their eloquent colleagues – about current, old or bizarre topics, sometimes in English, sometimes in German, or self-translated; at times hilarious but also profound. The whole evening featuring protagonists with names like Jugo Ürdens or Nora Mazu is modelled after a fun late-night-show. Musical entertainment will be provided by DJs. An unusual poetry-jamboree that promises to be a lot of fun!

Invisible Handicraft
There is a lot of pottering about in many places in the city, but most of the time we don’t even notice it. That’s why the project “Unsichtbares Handwerk“ („invisible handicraft”) in the 7th and 8th district focuses on people who practise old or new handicraft trades, thus enriching the neighbourhood – from bookbinders to a passementerie factory – a paradise for ribbon peddlers. Another recommended treat for them: today’s city stroll “Ribbons & Textiles” that visits different handicraft businesses. If you prefer going on discovery tour on your own, you can download a detailed plan of all workshops here!

Sleep and sleep disorders
You usually only realise how important enough sleep is once you are seriously sleep deprived. Yawn ;-) An intolerable state that can quickly bring you to the breaking point of your capacities. Psychotherapist Armin Weinrath is giving a talk today, introducing the “Top 8 of Sleep welfare” and explains what you can do to get a relaxing night’s rest – preventively, but also when you are already suffering from sleep problems. Including exercises! He also looks at sleep from different perspectives and goes into detail about different biological rhythms and their influence on sleeping. Free entry!

Lord of the Onion Rings
Best of entertainment right around CitySpotterGirl’s corner! The dinner-theatre has shamelessly raided the respective fantasy-literature and knitted a live-action-multi-participants-role-play-adventure-epos that is absolutely not meant to be taken seriously. This big Middle Earth-parody comes with a rough-hearty meal, mead in clay tankards and a whole host of crude fairytales about heroes with pointed ears, women in armoured bikinis, magic dingbats and ugly goblins. The gastronomic-epic forest stroll through magical worlds is highly recommended, although due to some hefty jokes not quite G-rated!

On the Roof of the Museum
As Christmas-related stress is already creeping in, how about a relaxing glass of punch and a deep breath? And all that accompanied by an amazing view? In that case, a guided tour through the Museum of Natural History is highly recommended. During the one-hour-tour through the building, you learn a lot about the museum’s history and its architecture, you can look behind the scenes of the house and even climb up to the dome. But the highlight here is the nightly drink on the roof – a wonderful view over the romantically illuminated inner city is included.

Humorous Art & Design Advent
Funny opportunity to slowly start warming up for singing Christmas songs: Gallery Sandpeck hosts an open singing group on Wednesdays. The sing-along map provides a big selection of songs of all kinds of different genres, among them also Christmas stuff of course. Song wishes by participants are well considered, Nadja Offinger, who runs “Musikraum-Wien”, accompanies the singing with her guitar. The art displayed on site is humoristic and quite Christmas-suitable: from beautiful gold rim bowls over cartoons to witty pottery figurines. Neat!

CitySpotterGirl has a soft spot for love stories. The newest one: young Viennese guy & young Viennese lady, who are both in France to learn the art and craft of baking and confectionary, meet in Paris, fall in love and return to Vienna to open a real French boulangerie. They did an amazing job reconstructing a former horse barn from the Renaissance – and now we have a piece of Paris in the 1st district!
