"Heya Girls!"
Oh, it gets dark so early right now! As if we couldn’t all do with an overdose of radiance and brightness after such a year. That is why, ladies, we have to learn an Arabic word today: it is “al nour" and means “the light”. And it is also the name of a great women's project in Marrakech. In the Moroccan handicraft association founded in 2013, physically impaired women embroider clothing, fashion accessories and home accessories. So Alnour does indeed bring light into the social-economic Marrakech darkness, where woman and work don’t really go together anyway. The textiles produced are really pretty – and shine all the way to Vienna this weekend! Alnour makes camp at the shop Safran & Cie for three days and brightens the domestic woman’s heart with the finest table lines and bedclothes, delightful tops, scarves, bags and cushions. All made from cotton or linen and with hand-embroidered Fassi, trout or polka-dot ornaments. There’s always a little light :-)
Wishing you a radiant week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Sheila Hicks: Thread, Trees, River
A rush of colours! Flexible, sensual and appealing, at times delicate and intimate, then monumental and expansive: the fabrics, sculptures and installations of artist Sheila Hicks challenge traditional notions of textile art and explore new artistic levels. Born in Nebraska, Sheila Hicks originally started out as a painter, today she is considered a virtuoso of textile (including archaic) techniques and historical traditions. The exhibition “Thread, Trees, River” is her first solo exhibition in Austria. Tip: especially beautiful are also the “Minimes”, her miniatures made of yarn.

Purora Shop
Washing, peeling, cutting, putting everything away, cleaning – all this for just one smoothie? From today there’s an easier way: the Upper Austrian start-up “Purora” has moved to Vienna with its first shop. It sells ready-made jars full of vegetables and fruit that just need to be chopped in a blender. Although they have their own Purora appliance for this, you can also use your own model from home, of course. Apple with nuts, matcha with grapes, pear with goji berries and other varieties are always organic and vegan. The same applies to the soups: mix, heat in a pot – bon appétit.

The recipes for yoghurt panna cotta, tiramisu and mini-tartlets are gluten-free, low in carbohydrates and partly lactose-free. The oven stays cold for all desserts, meaning: uncomplicated preparation and no stress in the kitchen. So the motto for the festive meal is: don't deny yourself, dig in!

At Gummistiefelhaus, suitable footwear is now available at a reduced price: Hunter boots now cost 40 percent less, but only while stocks last! The trendy boots were designed to withstand Scotland's weather moods, today they are modern all-rounders – weatherproof and a must-have at British rock festivals. For all hip dogwalkers, puddle jumpers and mud hoppers.

This week, 10 December to be precise, marks the 150th anniversary of Adolf Loos' birthday. Two exhibitions celebrate this important pioneer of modern architecture. With its new show “Adolf Loos. Private Houses”, the MAK is focusing on his revolutionary private residential buildings – mostly luxuriously furnished single-family homes, villas and country houses for a middle-class, often Jewish clientele. 100 design drawings, plans, photographs and models are on display. His lesser-known literary works are exhibited at Wienbibliothek.

There are textile wristbands, silk and cotton scarves to be wrapped around your neck, head and wrist. The hip piggyback gym bags are available with geometric patterns and in watercolour look. Annina Pargfrieder |

Bread baking with sourdough and yeast
Well-known Corona side effect: suddenly everyone bakes their own bread. But Annina Pargfrieder makes something really special out of the loaf. Her food blog “backabenteuer” was honoured as one of the best in 2020, for hobby bakers she has now switched to live online courses. Sourdough and yeast are used to bake hearty mixed and farmhouse bread, which she artfully shapes with “bread scoring” and stencils: by slicing, the crust opens like an artichoke, leaf patterns, bees, foxes and lion's manes of turmeric are created. Exemplary bread art!

Bogis tiny house online concert
She's not only a voice-, but also a vibe wonder: Boglarka Babiczki, a Viennese by choice with Hungarian roots. Today she invites you to an atmospheric “tiny home concert”, where she presents her new songs via YouTube live stream. In her one-woman show with vocals, synth and loops, the singer-songwriter serves up “dark-ambient-popjazz” with strong lyrics: socially critical, feminist, full of love and always with a little paprika and a lot of Hungarian black humour. Also included is her latest hit “ Vincent”, inspired by Saint-Exupery's Little Prince.

Christmas tree sale from VinziRast
A grove of magnificent Christmas trees is currently covering the inner courtyard of the charitable VinziRast restaurant “mittendrin” with greenery. Shrinking tree population is expressly desired here, because: half the proceeds of every Christmas tree sold go straight to the maintenance of the VinziRast facilities for homeless people – for them, emergency shelters and housing projects are essential for survival in winter. The donation campaign offers beautiful Nordmann firs and Colorado firs from organic cultivation in Lower Austria. Happy tree shopping!

lil’fame
Freshly drifted in from Klagenfurt's pedestrian zone: with a pop-up, the boutique “lil'fame” sniffs the air of Vienna's big city, shop manager Chiara Ambrusch plans to stay in the capital until March. She has brought cheerful boho fashion with her, which she tracks down in small shops in Italy and France. In addition, she has found some decorations and accessories with holiday flair that come from Bali: necklaces of colourful beads and pompons, handmade hammam scarves. Plus knitted clothing, jumpers and tops – and all quite easy on the wallet.

Martin Schläpfer: 4
The new director of the State Opera Ballet opens his first programme with a bang – and introduces himself as a choreographer at the same time. Martin Schläpfer simply calls his brilliant premiere of Mahler's 4th Symphony “4”, which can be seen as a danced depiction of the pandemic & society. Schläpfer brings the entire ensemble, 102 dancers, onto the stage. A challenge not only in Corona times. The result is a brilliant mixture of classical ballet and modern dance! The dancers performed in the completely empty Opera – the stream can be seen until 4 March.

Online Talk with Mireille Ngosso
A strong woman: Mireille Ngosso surely is. With the SPÖ politician, a black woman has moved into the Vienna City Council and Landtag this year for the first time. The medical doctor, who fled the Congo at the age of three, has not only made history this year. She has also organised the Black Lives Matter protest in Vienna and 50,000 people have joined her. In the online talk on Zoom in the evening she talks about racism in Austria, her career and feminism – and she answers questions. If you have any, don’t hold back, there are interesting things to learn.

Viennese Advent calendar
On the home stretch before Christmas, things get tricky: tedious family meals, right and wrong gifts, and gaffes that should be avoided. That is why 24 well-known Viennese reveal their Advent life hacks to the magazine “Besser STADTleben”: Every day an online window opens, behind which a video of Gerda Rogers, Christa Kummer, Robert Palfrader, Nino from Vienna or the Vienna Boys Choir awaits. How – if at all – do you debate your relatives? How often is it allowed to play “Last Christmas” before you become liable to prosecution for assault? Finally there are answers ;-)

Motto Brot
Reminds you a little of the beautiful old bakeries in Paris: Motto-founder Bernd Schlacher opened a new bakery on Mariahilferstraße with bread expert Barbara van Melle this week. Matching the beautiful shop with its flower tiles, bread, pastries and “Viennoiserien” are produced here with a lot of love (and time!). And everything is organic, of course. Unusual types of cereals are used, like perennial rye from the Waldviertel region or one-grained wheat. The result is – from Neunerlei gingerbread to baguettes – bread for connoisseurs that is also quite eye-catching. And never overpriced!

Pizza Randale
So, it happened. After 9 months of Corona and 2 lockdowns CitySpotterGirl is lying on the sofa while eating pizza in front of the TV. Handwringingimpossible! But in my defence, I will say this: it’s not just any pizza, of course. Because you can do pizza differently. For example, with red beets, horseradish and smoked rainbow trout (incredibly tasty!) or with Black Angus roast beef and lemon oil. And when Blunzen, apple and marjoram land on the pizza, it’s called “Wiener Blut”. The ultra-creative pastry discs are baked at Randale – daily from midday for pickup or delivery. What luck!
