"Heya Girls!"
When actors and directing stars rush through the city centre, the Rathaus square is a frantic setup-site and you can feel a certain crackle in the May air, it can only mean one thing: The Festwochen are just around the corner! And on Friday there will be a grand opening at the Rathaus square. We hear that the evening show will be spectacular this year – the concept and direction are by David Schalko. The filmmaker's approach is naturally quite visual and he will transform the Rathaus into a pulsating screen by means of 3D mapping. The music comes from the easy-going electronic pioneers Kruder & Dorfmeister, “hand mit auge” do the visuals – and there is also a whole series of stars. Bilderbuch will be performing, as will the exceptional Norwegian musician Sofia Jernberg, Burg actress Caroline Peters, Chris Haring's dance company Liquid Loft and the Vienna Singakademie. Schalko's aim of the wild mishmash: to get people dancing! Great. Uh, how do you do that again?

Wishing you a festive week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

 Galerie Giese
Vienna City Gallery Walk
You really gotta get out your walking shoes for this. Because the inner-city hiking day tracing art has been extended from 1 evening to 3 days! Over 40 galleries open their doors and offer art, concerts, guided tours and vernissages. And there's a lot to discover! From masterpieces of Viennese Art Nouveau to new design at the Wiener Silber Manufactur to rescued plants from the destroyed environs of Kiev that are being metallised. And for those who need a rest along the way: titled “Private Banking”, 35 artists have designed benches for the Gallery Walk ;-)

2 x Flea market
Not just one but two flea market tips in one fell swoop: big, colourful and cheap – or chic, classy and charitable. At the latter, well-known Viennese sell for a good cause (Dancer against Cancer), including Jimmy Choo shoes and Louis Vuitton handbags. At the other flea market on Shopinsel02 there are perhaps less exclusive brands, but heaps of great bargains: clothes, toys, bicycles, tableware, art, music, antiques... Exhibitions will be held both on Karmelitermarkt and along Taborstraße. An insider tip among flea market pros!

ethnocineca
A cinematic look into distant worlds! After a forced break of two years, the film festival ethnocineca is showing 57 ethnographic and documentary films from all over the world for one week at the Votiv Kino and the De France. And they are by no means dry, but incredibly close to life, touching and stirring. Today, for example, filmmaker Lea Najjar delivers an impressionistic portrait of her home city Beirut in “Kash Kash”. “Room without a view”, on the other hand, is about the thousands of women from Africa and Asia who are placed in Lebanon as domestic workers and exploited there. Recommended!

 Wildes Wien
Wild Herbs Walk + Buffet
Into the wild! It's hard to believe how many kinds of edible plants can be found in Vienna's public parks. How to pick them, what dishes they go with and how to prepare them is what you will learn today on a guided wild herb walk with nutrition expert Alexandra Rath through Strauss-Lanner Park. Afterwards, the author will present her book „Wildes Wien – gegessen wird, was in der Stadt wächst”. In it, Viennese sights meet edible wild plants. Exactly what these are will be demonstrated in a culinary manner at a small wild plant buffet. There’s free admission!

World music from all over the world: as colourful as Vienna's markets are the concerts currently taking place. Musik.Markt is the name of the concert series by Basis.Kultur.Wien. So in addition to weekend shopping, you can pick up a few tunes from faraway lands. Today, for example, from Kamyab Sadeghi. The musician from Tehran studied in Vienna and brings melancholic sounds in fusion oriental style to Hannovermarkt with vocals and instruments from his homeland (Tar, Setar and Precision). Caution: atmospheric, the shopping might be quickly forgotten!

Start of Mila
Community markets are familiar from New York. Now, as you know, the concept has also come to Vienna. Mila is a community-owned supermarket for members, where only organic goods from small farms are available at low prices. And today the first sales weekend starts! You can buy homemade spreads from Balkan farmers (BioBalkan), mafia-free tomato sauce from Associazione NoCap or natural cosmetics. Until the really big location is found, the minimarket in Haberlgasse is being tested – anyone can shop for a 2 € trial membership!

Watercolour painting for beginners
“We love handmade” is the motto of Anna and Petra, who have also given their do-it-yourself studio this name. In it, the two show how to let off steam creatively, tap into one's artistic potential and even produce a presentable result in the process. In the Loose Watercolor Florals course, you’ll learn how to draw a wide variety of flowers and grasses using watercolour techniques and how to create your own floral patterns. The two self-women reveal many tips and tricks for using brushes and paint and present watercolour painting from a modern, relaxed side.

Song Contest Public Viewing
The Austrians Lum!x and Pia Maria were eliminated in the semi-finals, but so what. The Eurovision Song Contest is more about the weirdness factor and the cult, anyway. And it's guaranteed that one of the sentimental heartbreak ballads will win this year. Because the joy of kitsch increases in proportion to the number of spectators, public viewing of the grand final is recommended this evening. Special tip: The spectacle will be broadcast live from Turin on the big screen at the Votiv Kino. And admission is free! However, you have to get numbered tickets from 19:00.

New museum: ÖMSUBM
What a mysterious combination of letters! Behind it is the Austrian Museum for Black Entertainment and Black Music which opens today. For one month, Belvedere 21 in the Arsenal will make room for the new project, which will showcase stories of Black artists and entertainers who rose to prominence in the white-dominated entertainment industry in this country – from the 1940s to the early noughties. Jessye Norman and the Rounder Girls are among them, as are Arabella Kiesbauer and Roberto Blanco. Exciting topic, long overdue!

Love you Goethe
Nomen est omen! Where else could a market for antiquarian books be held more in style than at the historic Palais Schey in Goethegasse next to the Goethe monument? Built in 1863 for the Jewish aristocratic family Friedrich Schey von Koromla, the magnificent building miraculously survived the Nazis and World War 2! In the 1980s, they even shot the ORF series “Ringstraßenpalais” here. Today, though, beautiful books are the stars at the book fair – from biographies and bibliophiles to art and photography books and vintage photos, they got it all. Even an artists' buffet!

Parallel Editions 2022
We call it the little sister of Parallel Vienna. In addition to the big art fair in September, there will again be a small offshoot in spring, the Parallel Editions, which will sweeten the waiting time until the big fair. The focus will be on graphics, drawings, prints, small sculptures and multiples. For four days, works by renowned artists will be on display –for example, Keith Haring, Nobuyoshi Araki and Cosima von Bonin. On more than 1,000 square metres, the former Semperdepot thus becomes a stage for the works of the well-known and the soon-to-be-known ;-)

Südwind Street Festival
This sparks joy: World music, arts and crafts and delicious food from Africa, Asia and Latin America are served up at the Südwind Street Festival – right in the middle of the university campus of Altes AKH. Intercultural meetings, chatting, listening and celebrating. And getting to know other cultures, of course. NGOs and organisations will present their work, live concerts will offer a diverse programme ranging from soul to indie pop, and you can really let off steam in workshops. Yu-Taekwandoo is on the programme, as are mantra chanting and lectures on food security. Con mucho gusto!

Florian Scheuba + Daniel Kehlmann
“If this goes to shit, we’re gone. Chats, Power and Corruption. An investigation” is the (English translation of the) title of Florian Scheuba's latest book. His investigative work is satirical, surprising, exciting, funny, unbelievable, embarrassing, depressive and sad as he reports on the countless chat messages from our ex-chancellor's closest circle. A tangled mess of corruption, bought media, haggling for political positions, and intrigues. Today the cabaret artist will read from his book and will talk with Daniel Kehlmann about satire, politics and their hybrid forms.

The Chances of the Online World
“Let's think like an entrepreneur and see the online world from a different angle,” is Margarita Misheva's message. In March 2020, we were catapulted into the digital world. A difficult challenge for all those who did not yet feel at home there yet. But digitalisation has long been the norm and we must learn to see opportunities in it. Digital consultant Margarita Misheva encourages this in her lecture in which she will talk about a new form of connectedness in virtual space. How do you deal with trust and diversity in the virtual space? And what business models are there?

Klimt – The Immersive Experience
That Klimt can create wow effects is nothing new. But now, with the help of the most modern technology, another one is being added. Gustav Klimt's paintings are enlarged several times with the help of elaborate light installations, projected onto the walls and thus brought to new life. You stroll among his most famous works and experience them up close; more than ever, the Adele Bloch-Bauer shines in golden colours. In fact, you have never seen her like this before. The 360-degree spectacle is a completely new way of experiencing art and amazes even not so die-hard Klimt fans.

Whether ballerinas, sling pumps or sandals –if you want to know what the lady of the world is wearing in 2022, you have to make a detour to the Wunderl pop-up today. Normally, fashionistas pilgrimage to Sollenau for this very reason. But conveniently, the shoe gurus Andrea and Franz Wunderl have packed up their new range and spread it out for 3 days at Vienna Ballhaus. Instantly! Vienna Stree Photography
What has changed on Vienna's streets from 1860 to today? This refers not only to the changing cityscape but also to life in the streets. Intimate snapshots, impressive street scenes and fleeting moments of Viennese city life: the exhibition “Instantly!” shows this in impressive pictures of the last 150 years. Among the exhibits are photos by Franz Hubmann from the 1950s as well as never-before-shown pictures by unknown artists. A visual voyage of discovery from early street photography to new Instagram aesthetics. The vernissage is today.

Tour: The Gardens on the Ring
We often pass them, but hardly notice them: the gardens along the way. Today, landscape architect Mechthild Bohnert invites you to pause and take a closer look at the Viennese gardens along the Ringstrasse. She tells us about the history of the creation of Heldenplatz, leads us through the Burggarten, which was only intended for the imperial court, and on to the rose-covered Volksgarten – Vienna's first public park, which we have Emperor Franz the First to thank for. The passionate gardener wanted to bring more greenery into the densely built-up city as early as 1820. Quite visionary!

Körbchen
Absolutely (l)ace! You may already know the lingerie “Körbchen”, but now the label has moved and presents its homemade lingerie in the new, elegant and spacious studio on Margaretenstraße. The two founders still sew themselves. “It's just fun,” is how the girls put it. They work exclusively with sustainable materials and recycled lace from Italy and Germany. Their bras don't have underwires, but all the lingerie is comfortable, suitable for everyday wear, yet chic and adorned with lace. Which is no contradiction, as you can see. There is also swimwear available, by the way.

But yesterday's lunch in the cosy garden (despite the bustling city life), the colourful chairs, the retro-pastel carnation bouquets on the tables, the delicious mushroom risotto, the summery apple pie – CitySpotterGirl was happy.
