"Heya Girls!"
If I hadn't become a journalist, I'd probably be designing furniture. When I came across the minimalist elegance of Eileen Grey's 1920s furniture designs many years ago, I was hooked. Thanks to the Irishwoman, my passion for design and architecture began – especially when it comes from women. And so next week will be the highlight of my year so far: Because the Furniture Museum proclaims loudly “Here we are! Women in Design 1900 – Today”. The works of around 80 designers will be on show, and not just icons like Eileen Grey and Ray Eames. Hitherto unknown women will also be presented: Jeanne Toussaint, who shaped the Parisian luxury industry for decades as creative director of the jewellery house Cartier from the 1920s onwards. Or Galina Balashova, who designed many of the futuristic interiors of the Russian space capsules. Contemporary designers such as Patricia Urquiola (photo) are also given their due. As well as being beautiful, the exhibition offers a whole new perspective on the history of modern design!

Wishing you an exploratory week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

1st Femme Jam
Premiere! Girl power times six at today's first Femme Jam to celebrate International Women's Day! Six Viennese singer/songwriters share not only a passion for handmade music, touching stories and beautiful melodies, but also the boards that mean the world to them. Leelah Sky, for example, conjures up soulful fireworks on stage with steamy beats and fragile, powerful vocals, Flickentanz (photo) adds an intense softness to her magical “poetry pop” and Maddy Rose's jazzy voice creates an intimate atmosphere for her vintage melodies. Let's jam!

What is the future of our planet? This is the question that a group of ambitious filmmakers have set out to answer by creating the brand-new Nature Film Festival! Over four days, they will share their exciting experiences, encounters and discoveries with us. Patty Schmitt, for example, visited Serena and Jared on their farm in the Allgäu region of Germany for her documentary “Die Stangenbohnen Partei”. Gild Easter Eggs
The Easter bunny is on your doorstep, bringing not only the spirit of spring, but also creative VHS courses!! So if you're already looking for original gift ideas or unusual decorative DIYs for your palm catkin bouquet at home, head to the old WU today. Instead of being painted in the traditional way, the blown-up eggs are given an elegant coat of metal flakes. This way, the Easter messengers can be gilded in an abstract way and are sure to be an eye-catcher in this year's Easter nest. The only problem: hiding them might be difficult because of all the sparkle... ;-)

 Véro la Reine
Véro La Reine
Since 2021, the Frankophonie concert has been a musical tribute to the French language, multilingualism and diversity. For this year's edition, Cameroonian vocal diva Vero La Reine brings a colourful load of good vibes to the stage with Bikutsi – the traditional music of the Beti ethnic group in southern Cameroon. Her lyrics are actually rather serious in Ewondo, with themes addressing secrets, customs and traditions, but it’s definitely safe to say that nobody will manage to sit still – if only because “Bia kut si” means something like “We stomp on the ground”!

Biedermeier lady travels the world
Even today, travelling around the world is still quite an expedition. Now imagine it without the internet, telephone and aeroplane! Not an obstacle for Ida Pfeiffer. In fact, the Viennese lady travelled around the world twice alone (!) during the Biedermeier era! She spared neither effort nor exotic creatures and is now regarded as Austria's first female world traveller. Her botanical and zoological finds include thousands of objects on display at the NHM. And her vividly written travelogues are more than exciting. You can check it out at today's time travel interview with Theaterweiber!

Until 13 May, the MyPlace SelfStorage in Rudolfsheim and Seestadt is turning one of its compartments into an exchange room until 15 March. The motto is swap instead of throw away, and the rules are quickly explained: for every item you bring you can take one for free, and what you bring must be in good condition and in working order. Claire Lefèvre: Loie
The true meaning of the phrase “dancing on air” will be demonstrated at the imagetanz festival! For three weeks, creative dance art will be on display. At today's opening, for example, the witty choreographer and writer Claire Lefèvre's literary performance explores the intertwining of modern dance, queerness and colonialism through the example of Loie Fuller. The modern dance icon was world famous for her mesmerising dances with illuminated fabrics – and today we can look forward to extravagant textile art paired with literature and dance!

Travesty of Love
And because it's so nice, here's another nice tip to celebrate us women! The Jewish Community is putting the spotlight on the life stories of three pioneering Jewish women: literary entertainment queen Vicki Baum, poet Else Lasker-Schüler, who confused her male colleagues with her pageboy cut and wide boho trousers, and Else Feldmann with her milieu studies of Vienna's slums. Today, the actress Gerti Drassl lends her voice to these three powerful women and reads from their works, while Ethel Merhaut accompanies her musically – touching!

 Sven Regener
Sven Regener reads Franz Kafka
Franz Kafka died 100 years ago. A festive occasion, for which cult author Sven Regener has unceremoniously decided to become a live Kafka interpreter and read works by the writer for four days. Today, “Amerika” is the opener. A book in which the linguistic perspectives slip from time to time, one sentence contradicts another and over-explanation contributes more to obfuscation than to enlightenment, but what the heck – the story is good and you want to find out what happens next. And it goes on and on, because Karl Roßmann is a brave hero. Guaranteed to be terrific!

Lucie Horsch
As a child, it was probably the instrument we all hated, and even today the recorder is not considered to be ear candy. Well, until you meet Lucie Horsch. As a 9-year-old, the Dutch fluted a jaw-dropping performance of Brahms' 5th Hungarian Dance. Today, she is a multi-award-winning recorder virtuoso who makes you wonder whether she has several lungs or how else she can play Piazzolla's Argentinian tangos without fainting. Today, along with other highlights from her “Origins” programme, she can be heard at the Konzerthaus – and here for those who are already curious!

Karl
Another one bites the crust! This time it was us and it was fluffastic! It's rather easy to overlook the hip new Karl bakery on Margaretenplatz because it's not exactly big – and it doesn't have to be. Because with its selection of sourdough breads, sandwiches and unusual sweet temptations such as babka – a chocolate-covered version of Israeli striezel – the owners manage to fulfil every pastry lover's heart's desire. Somehow everything tastes a little crispier, fluffier and creamier here, and on top of that, the coffee is also sensationally good. And the icing on the cake is the super friendly staff!
