Tipps der Stadtspionin

editorial

"Heya Girls!"
Yeah, I know: the journey is the destination and all that. But sometimes it's still cool in an un-Buddhist-like way to head for a real goal. When cycling, for example. Just pedalling through the scenery or circling the Ring on the cycle path isn’t all that stimulating anymore after a while. That's why the editorial team has come up with a remedy: at the portal you will find sophisticated bike tours for sophisticated ladies. We tested and panted in Vienna and around Vienna and near Vienna. My favourite route is the one that takes you past a conspicuous number of ice cream shops. By the way, if you lose too much time while constantly enjoying gelato, just end the tour at halftime and go to the Heurigen. But kitschy castles, deserts and melancholic cemeteries are on the programme, too. For adrenalin junkies there is the action tour and for connoisseurs there is the organic- and farmer tour. There we send you to vegetable rarities, organic noodles and farm shops. So now you know what to do this summer. And what is the motto of the week? Tight calfs for tight gals!

Wishing you a zippy week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Picnic Italiano at Heldenplatz
Longing for a holiday? Every Thursday you can get a piece of Italy in a basket in the middle of Heldenplatz. There, the cool HeldenBar in front of the World Museum fills picnic baskets with Mediterranean delicacies: antipasti, focaccia, grana, olives, salami and a well-chilled bottle of prosecco. If you want more, you get hot dog variations (classic, American, Viennese and even vegan!) and frozen treats from Eis-Greissler. Important: Picnic baskets and, if required, tables can always be ordered until Wednesday 9:00. If you prefer to sit in the grass, don't forget your blanket. Ciao!

 AfterWork am Bauernhof
Of Bees, Mushrooms and Compost
After-Work on the farm! The roots of our food are very close, even in the middle of Vienna. The “Landwirtschaft anders” tour shows what can be grown in a big city: starting with the basics with bees and flowers in Gangls Bio Honigschmiede (an organic honey factory). Hut und Stiel is about the clever breeding of mushrooms on coffee brew – a resource that is known to be available in infinite quantities in Vienna. Composting “Terra preta” (black soil) creates super-fertile soil – the small city farm demonstrates how you can apply the technique in your own garden, too.

 Caritas reStart
Upcycling products by restart
At “reStart”, young people who are currently unable to attend an apprenticeship become pretty creative. They make sophisticated upcycling products such as bags made of plastic tarpaulins or origami earrings with small paper boats in the creative workshop of Caritas. The really stylish pieces are now available at the two-day garage sale. Buying backpacks and bags made of old bicycle inner tubes, vases, drinking glasses and bowls made of old glass is also doubly worthwhile: disposable materials are sensibly reused and a part of the proceeds goes to the young artists.

 Theater im Salon
Agatha Christie Festival
Put on your thinking cap, unsolved criminal cases are reopened in the evening. The art nouveau “Theater im Salon” celebrates the detective short stories of Agatha Christie with a kind of flying dinner and crime reading. Sparkling wine and delicacies such as shrimps and salmon are served to the private table by your seat, artists read from the “Tuesday Night Club”. In this Miss Marple and five friends try to solve mysterious murders. Today they are working on “The Idol House of Astarte” and “Strange Jest”, each told by Susanna Hirschler and Florian Stanek.

KaiserQuartier at MQ
Imperial poultry farm, royal court stables and a protective bulwark – all this was once the imperial MuseumsQuartier. The “KaiserQuartier Tour” takes up the urban planning stages of the area as a narrative and leads through the eventful history of Vienna – from the Ottoman siege to the use of today's museum as a bulwark against the Napoleonic troops. Knights and revolutionaries can be met in the state rooms as well as artists and footballers. The special tour about chickens and champions is only available every third Saturday of the month – so today ;-)

Flea market at Raumkomplett
Not only beautiful, but also sustainable and socially produced are the fine design objects in the shop of architect Doris Ackerl. Unusual: the assortment declares them with a list of ingredients: abbreviations stand for zero waste, social focus or material recycling. At the flea market, they offer big discounts for two days, up to 70% on individual items and exhibits! Furniture in Danish design by “Hübsch” and interiors by “Miss Wood” are sold. Glasses, cosmetics and other small items can be found in rummage boxes. A bargain purchase with a clear conscience.

 Boutiquehotel Stadthalle/ Tina Herzl
Bio Pop-up Bar
A fabulous energy balance: the boutique hotel Stadthalle is the first city hotel in the world to produce more energy than it consumes. This summer, it also hosts Vienna's first organic bar. It is located in the idyllic, green inner courtyard and serves only fancy drinks made of organic products from Austrian producers: organic lemonades from 100% fruit from Pona, bitter lemonades from Bitterschön, O-Gin and O-Rum come from Josef Farthofer from Öhling and Wiener Dirndl brings Dirndl liqueur. The Pop-up Bar opens every Saturday and is open to everyone – not just hotel guests.

In the nice restaurant OBEN on the roof of the Main Library the benches will be set up today with the setting July sun and the sublime view of Vienna can be enjoyed. For the poetry slam crew FOMP is holding their popular competition for the best 5-minute short texts here. Like the yoga sessions on the jetty near the venue Bootshaus at the lower Alte Donau. From today, the pros of the yoga studio “natural High” hold slow-paced morning-yoga-sessions there every Sunday: with sun salute, basic yoga poses, and breathing and relaxation techniques. No previous skills required. Afterwards you can treat yourself to a breakfast at Bootshaus. So great!

Welcome to Cat City
Absolutely iconic! And just to be clear: a cat's life is really no walk in the park! The things that have to be endured: roommates, cat-sitters, diets, neutering. Luckily a cat has seven lives – and we have the Cat Video Festival. It may no longer exist in its original form, but today the curators are bringing 14 cat short films to the open air short film festival “dotdotdot”. Meaning: you’ll be sitting in the beautiful courtyard garden of the Volkskundemuseum, experiencing a cat’s view of the world. True films as testimony of their silent heroism ;-)

The hidden glyptotheque
A place only few people know about: The Glyptothek of the Academy of Fine Arts leads a life of secrecy. One of the city's most unusual museums is located underground under the Semper Depot and can only rarely be visited. The collection of statues comprises 450 plaster casts of the most famous sculptures in art history – from Michelangelo's Pietà and the Capitoline Venus to Baroque portrait busts from the Comédie Francaise. Today at 16:00 there will be a special guided tour – and you can find even more secret tips from the underground in CitySpotterGirl’s new book.

 Fräulein Hona
Fräulein Hona at Chelsea
Voices between weightless dreaminess and thoughtful melancholy make up the magic of Fräulein Hona. Harmonic acoustic folk is the speciality of the four young women, they alternately sing about memories, longings, transience and cookie crumbs in German and English. The quartet regularly exchanges beautiful instruments like guitar, harmophone and ukulele among each other. Tonight at the Chelsea Music Club, the Hona girls will be playing new songs, old ones and much of the current album “nowhere but here”. Listen and dream yourself away.

The Blues Brothers Extended
Subversive anarchy, chaos and destruction: the film is a masterpiece of nonchalant nonsense. To celebrate its 40th birthday, the Filmcasino and Gartenbaukino are today showing the legendary comedy “Blues Brothers” with 15 minutes of additional material. Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi as a wild pair of brothers and probably the best and surely longest car chase in film history are as iconic today as the grandiose film music. Of course with accompanying star appearances by blues icons such as James Brown, Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles. So cool!

Rendl
So many beautiful colours! On the clothing rails, that is, the shop itself is still a bit bare – but it’s all about the cool swimwear anyway. Because here, dear ladies, you find the currently hippest bathing outfits in all of Vienna! Designer Rosa Rendl-Wittmann was in London and Hetzendorf, knows fashion photography and can do plus-size designs with good support. The fabrics are of high-quality sports material, which is soft and easy to the touch and apparently dries super-fast. They are then used to make cool colourblocking suits or plain-coloured bikinis in classic but expressive cuts. Truly ultra-stylish!
