"Heya Girls!"
Alas, goodbyes are one of those things. The departure of certain politicians may be a reason for drinking champagne and Eureka calls, but most of the time, goodbyes are sad. Including the one of Burgtheater-boss Karin Bergmann, who at least seems determined to make the farewell easy for us. Because for the Burgtheater-goodbye, she offers a fine day in and around the theatre on Saturday: in the morning, there’s the craziest flea market of the city at the parking area Volksgartenseite – with giant dwarfs, an XXL-aquarium, a Playmobil robot, souvenirs, technical equipment, stage furniture and decorations, costumes, requisites and large-format photographs. And in the afternoon, you can conquer the Burg-stage, apart from readings by Hermann Beil and Dorothee Hartinger! While wandering through the theatre magic, you will meet huge dwarfs, movable forests and you will experience stage set pieces and requisites up close. By the way, taking pictures is expressly permitted. And we will wave a quiet farewell “Servus”.

Wishing you a good week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

10 years Alice
Alice turns 10 and that’s obviously a reason to celebrate! Alice is well on her way to become a classic, after all. And if you have no idea what this is about: Sandra Haischberger is throwing a birthday party for the prettiest of her handmade tableware series at her porcelain manufactory feine dinge. The unusually formed cups, pots, plates and bowls are eye-catchers on every table – not least because of the many combinable colours. For the birthday, they are launching the new colour Yellow, plus they also have drinks, a buffet, music and sweets from Gregor’s.

Gesangskapelle Hermann
Even though it may not have gotten around in the rest of the world: the hottest boyband since the Backstreet Boys is from Vienna. And: the boys from Gesangskapelle Hermann can sing really, really well. Don’t even need instruments for it ;-) Today, they offer proof for this at the Theater am Spittelberg, wittily and eloquently, garnished with the necessary dash of wickedness. Having arrived in the cosy circles of C-list celebrities, the Hermanns sing about narrow-mindedness and megalomania – in a-cappella mode, in dialect and (that’s the CD’s title) very elegantly.

Erfolgreich lieben
What a life! Georg Fraberger was born without arms and legs. Today, he works as a psychologist at AKH, and he also teaches at the Medical University of Vienna, writes books, and incidentally, he’s also happily married and a father of five children. And this very devil of a fellow is reading from his newest book today. In the book, he shows ways to a balanced love life in harmony with yourself and your partner – and how sex and love can lead to a fulfilling relationship. The examples that he describes are taken from his own marriage. Without blinkers but with much heart.

Vertigo
The title allows you to guess it: this exhibition may cause vertigo. From today, the mumok shows the history of op art, the art of optical illusion. The spectrum of the show spans all the way back to the year 1520 to the Mannerism-painter Parmigianino. He knew even then how to confuse the eye of the beholder with unusual body proportions. Works from the 20th century are represented with Duchamps, Albers and Vasarely. You can find out how op art can also be an experience that affects the whole body by engaging with the walk-in objects and experiments.

Garden Concert & Historical Dance Course
Literally just around the corner of CitySpotterGirl’s office is the Palais Schönburg with its beautiful (but unfortunately not publicly accessible) park. And that’s where it will get romantic tonight with a garden concert – Mozart is on the agenda! But the best thing comes afterwards: the guests are invited to learn historical dances – for this, too, there will be live music in original sound. You can dance into the weekend to Beethoven, Schubert and Mozart tunes in royal garden atmosphere. Meanwhile, CitySpotterGirl will practise how to gallantly drop her handkerchief.

Speed-Friending
Everybody knows what speed-dating is. Now there is finally speed-friending. It’s often hard to just chatter away with people who are strangers. These barriers don’t exist at the speed-friending event in the Nachbarschaftszentrum Leopoldstadt since everyone there will be in the same situation. During coffee and cake à la grandma and live-music, it’s easy to meet new people – and everyone is welcome, age and origin don’t matter. The entry fees to the pop-up café (including a welcome drink) go to Hilfswerk. Probably the most charming way to find new friends this week!

Donaukanaltreiben
Much ado again by the water! The “Donaukanaltreiben” brings cheery summer vibes with concerts, culinary treats and lots of action at all locations, from Grelle Forelle to Strandbar Hermann. The 3-day-festival brings concerts by Mary Broadcast and Electro Guzzi on Friday, on Saturday the Viennese Boatercross Challenge will take place for the first time. 4 boats start the race at the same time and search the quickest way through the buoys across the finish line. A Food & Art market is located at Salztorbrücke, and the yellow boat taxi speeds across the water again.

From noon, everything in the 5th district will revolve around art. Because the numerous artists living and working in Margareten are hosting a day of open ateliers today. For the first time, the art creators are granting fascinating insights behind the scenes of their creative work. You can either choose to explore the individual stations on your own or you may join a guided walk with the chairwoman of the district council. Salon Jardin
Charming! A comfortable garden chair that looks like an art object. A fine tasting of culinary-organic things, accompanied by jazz, under the spring sky – that’s Salon Jardin! Usually, the beautiful park of Schloss Hetzendorf is closed to the public. But for the Gartensalon, it will be opened for three days: 60 exhibitors present furniture, design, ceramics, floral stuff, edible stuff and arts and crafts, in addition to that they also have “green” lectures and workshops. What’s new is clever start-ups presenting their ideas, like creating organic fertiliser made from Viennese coffee grounds.

The delivery with pretty furniture pieces and home accessories has just arrived from India in containers. Sportif in the orchard
Even though it’s raining again at the moment, at some point it will get warm. Promise! And then, training inside at a studio gets kind of boring. This is where garden centre Jakubek comes in, they now offer a fitness programme in their orchard! Every other Monday, you can train here between apple trees and cherry trees together with a coach. Some of the exercises involve aids like medicine balls or stability board and can thus be customised to fit your own fitness level. So there are no more excuses, but there are smoothies directly from the orchard as a reward afterwards!

Singalong: Rocky Horror Picture Show
You know the dress code when you hear: “It’s just a jump to the left, and then a step to the right!” You basically can’t help but sing along when Richard O’Brien sings the Time Warp, anyway. It’s even mandatory today at Film Casino because they show the cult classic as a sing-along live spectacle. The theatre troop Villa Valium performs live in front of the screen, you get a surprise bag with funny goodies you’re allowed to use during the performance and if you come in a fitting costume, you even get a free drink! So, get dolled up horror-style and off you go: “I’m just a sweet transvestite ...”

Toulouse
We know (and love) David Schalko as director and producer for film, TV and Vorstadtweiber. But turns out, he’s good without a camera, too, as he proves with bringing “Toulouse” to the stage of Josefstadt. The dark depths of the human soul open up when revulsion and loathing collide on a personal level. As it does for the 2 protagonists, played by Sona MacDonald and Götz Schulte. The ex-married couple meets for a last talk. It’s typical Schalko to take the story ad absurdum – and that the (dark) humour is rooted in tragedy, anyway. There’s a „trailer” here.

VIS Opening Gala
305 films from 55 countries – that’s quite a dense programme. This year’s Short Film Festival is dedicated to the courage, the audacity and the will to change. The opening gala already constitutes a highly motivated and motivating start to the film marathon. Which begins with as many as six films tonight, plus a short homage to the only recently deceased Agnes Varda. Her short film documentary “Women Reply” from 1975 asked about women’s self-image and self-determination. The reply: “Our Body, Our Sex”. What could be more topical? Must see!

Songs by Hildegard von Bingen
Hildegard von Bingen is known for being a healer, as well as a poet and scholar. But only few people know that she was also a gifted composer. Her “Symphonia Harmoniæ Cælestium Revelationum” is a collection of sacred songs, which still exude a magical aura today. Singer and historian Francois Chaignaud brings the spiritual and healing power of the medieval music to life, accompanied by Marie-Pierre Brebant playing the bandura, a Ukrainian lute-zither. The performance in the Gösserhallen, lasting several hours, will thus become a meditative experience. You can listen in here.

Heavy mourning! Unfortunately, the Life Ball takes place for the last time this year! But for the goodbye, there will be an exhibition for the first time. The Imperial Furniture Collection presents costumes and accessories from this year’s Style Bible as well as selected exhibits from previous productions. The gaudy and fancy costumes shown are dedicated to the theme “circus” this year and were partly created with the help of Herbststrasse Fashion School students, partly by ART for ART. Matching the theme, the showroom was divided into a black and a white half. Still, not for black-white thinkers!

This cute boutique might as well be domiciled in Nizza, but is located in the Siebenstern quarter. The Little Black Cat has recently moved from Breitegasse to Zollergasse. Now you can find young, French labels there, like French Kiss Studio or Nathael with romantic summer dresses, flowery linen trousers and elegant lace blouses. Plus: handcrafted jewelry by Shaker Jewels from Paris. Adorable!

Peace Kitchen
New venue with a big idea: at “Friedensküche”, there are exclusively refugees at work, who cook dishes from their home-countries as well as dishes they got to know during their refugee routes. And yes, they cook quite well! The recipes are from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria and Iraq and range – vegetarian and with meat – from Palau (basmati rice with saffron) to Qorma (stew with vegetables and veal). The dishes are served on traditional-colourful plates, and you get nice explanations to every meal. By the way, the business plan comes from Afghan HAK pupils. Needs to be supported!
