Tipps der Stadtspionin

editorial

"Heya Girls!"
I’d like to send my regards to all those who have left for the holidays already. Enjoy it! But we here still at home have quite a good time as well. Especially since one of my favourite summer events is whirling back into the city, the ImPulsTanz Festival! Like every year, Europe’s biggest get-together for contemporary dance brings 64 cool international productions into town, plus more than 240 workshops, parties and exhibitions – makes it hard even for me to recommend individual dance events ;-) One of the highlights is definitely the Austrian premiere of Pina Bausch’s masterpiece Masurca Fogo by the dance theatre Wuppertal. The opening will be terrific, too: the “berserk of choreographic theatre” Johann Kresnik delivers a literal bloodbath: a Macbeth production. Great treats for dance aficionados are the free workshops on Jesuitenwiese and in the park on Argentinierstraße, with ballet, Bollywood, parkour or voguing. And if you like it even freer than that, just make your way to the Burgtheater, where the festival lounge is rocking with cool music and enjoy some unbridled shaking.

Wishing you a moving week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

 Blanka Sperkova
Blanka Sperkova: Animals
With this last name, the path was kind of mapped out! Sperk is Czech and means jewellery: Blanka Sperkova therefore is “Mrs Jewellery” ;-) And since she was looking for something to do while at the playground with the kids, she fell back on an old craft. Inspired by the wire techniques of former Slovak tinkers, she developed a special handknitting technique and thus creates (entirely without tools) jewellery art made of wire. She’s particularly taken with animals: apes, cows, birds, fish, and mythical creatures romp about on colliers and even wall reliefs. Today is vernissage!

 Combinat
Sale at Combinat
Oldies but Goldies! Beautiful highlights from the current summer collections find their way over the counter at Combinat right now. And this at incredibly low prices: the selected pieces from designers like Pitour, Artista, Aquanauta or Iamyou are heavily price-reduced! You can still hunt for bargains in the fine shop until mid-August and add a few cool pieces to summer: in a puristic sweater or in an airy striped dress, as a business-lady or in a chill, casual look. At the Combinat, they certainly know how to seduce urban fashionistas ;-)

 Süßes Eck
Noagerl snacking at Süßes Eck
Happiness can’t be bought – but chocolate can! Today you had best do so at the small confectionery Süßes Eck, by the way. Since the charming bonbon-shop starts its summer break from tomorrow, you get all open chocolate treats for half the price. This is called “Noagerl snacking”: leftover eating for the chocolate-obsessed, so to speak. Fresh cream truffles, creamy French nougat or Spanish creative-chocolate, plus bonbons and liquorice. You won’t break a sweat in light of the huge selection, though, because it’s wonderfully cool here. And everything’s great – because it’s made of chocolate :-)

 Agat Films
Opening frame[o]ut
Summer, cinema – and music! In the open air, just the way we like it in summer. Today is the opening of the festival frame[o]ut at MQ: for the eyes, they offer the bizarre documentary film “Talking about trees” about a Sudanese film club and for the ears, they have voluminous synthie-pop by Lucia Leena. Until the end of August, they show domestic and international films every weekend in yard 8 (at the boules courts) – mainly documentaries, short films and experimental films. You can borrow radio headsets that provide a full sound and in case of bad weather, they simply move to Arena21.

 Frida Kahlo Festival
Frida Kahlo festival
She is an icon of art and feminism – and from today, they even dedicate a festival to her in Vienna: Frida Kahlo, who died on Saturday 65 years ago, will be celebrated for three days by the Mexican community at the Stadtpark. And all Viennese are invited for look-alike-contests, live music and, obviously, Mexican cuisine. The afternoon is reserved for the children, the fiesta for adults starts at 19:00. Frida, daughter of a Catholic Mexican woman and a German with Jewish roots, is a symbol for a colourful picture of our society – and for joie de vivre. Viva la vida!

 Klimt Villa Wien
Gustav Klimt Birthday Party
Gustav Klimt would be 157 years now, which is why there’s a big celebration today at “his” studio (plus garden!) in Hietzing. In order to mark the occasion, a reading organised by the Klimt Verein, a pop-up art market at the salon and a portrait session will take place. Klimt’s great-granddaughter and fashion designer Brigitte Hubert-Mader will be at the “journey in time”-tour and entertain the audience with some unpublished family stories. Gustav groupies definitely can’t miss out on this! And the first hundred guests will receive Klimty goodie bags. Oh happy (Birth-)Day!

Lovesickness-Workshop
Oh yes, we all know it: lovesickness is real pain! And it can take a damn long time for the wounds to heal. Two female experts, art therapist Sabine Pek and psychologist Martina Trimmel, want to support those suffering from lovelornness in regaining their sense of wellbeing. Mindfulness and professional assistance, funny exercise (like designing a calendar) as well as the exchange with likeminded people strengthen the loving interaction with yourself. The workshop helps you to deal with a breakup – and this at a fine location, the green oasis Im Hinterhaus.

Medieval Market at Arsenal
Attention, Game of Thrones fans! This weekend, the Heeresgeschichtliche Museum invites you along on a time journey through the last seven centuries of military history. There will be spectacular show fights, artillery performances and camps. You will feel like Lady Brienne who is fighting her way through Winterfell as a brave knight. Another nerd-highlight is provided by the “living chess” re-enactment. For everyone else: stroll through the arts and crafts market and enjoy the culinary offerings and music shows. Medievally garmented people don’t pay any entry fee, by the way!

 ZEIT!RAUM, Petra Spiola
Wohnmaschine
In the 1920s, the housing shortage in Vienna was extreme. Therefore, the “Red Vienna” built 60,000 council flats – and you can see how cleverly they were planned in Anton Brenner’s apartment today. Meticulous details and inch-perfect planning is what characterises the work of the architect who was successful with his variable room concept in 1925. He was able to meet all of his family’s requirements of accommodation on 43 sqm. You will see elements that were ultramodern back then, like built-in umbrella stands, swivel night stands with reading light as well as folding beds.

 Pygmalion Theater
Ich, Ulrike, schreie
On just a few square metres, Ulrike Meinhofer is sitting under a neon light, completely shielded from the outside world. In a fictional theatre monologue, the RAF activists shouts her fury, her insanity, and her desperation into the empty cell, these are the last hours bevor she hangs herself. The piece by Nobel laureate in literature Dario Fo and his wife Franca Rame is performed today at the Pygmalion Theater in a double feature. Which means: just stay seated to also watch Franz Kafka’s “Ein Bericht für eine Akademie“. And in case it gets hot again: the room has air conditioning ;-)

 Barbara Bruckmüller
Barbara Bruckmüller Big Band
There aren’t many female composers and even fewer female big band leaders. The Viennese native Barbara Bruckmüller is both. For ten years, she has been entertaining international jazz- and swing fans with her Barbara Bruckmüller Big Band – BBBB for short – yet she always stays faithful to her home. With her CD “Mei Muatterl war a Weanarin”, for example, a swinging Wiener Lied-mix. For her current programme, “A Chain of Moments” (listen in: here), four string players were added to the band and thus became a jazz orchestra. Sounds a little bit like James Bond, but mostly like a lot of fun!

Voice Training under Palms
No, we’re not going to the Caribbean ;-) But since there are actually palm trees in the green yard of Volkshochschule Donaustadt, ladies can train their voices in a holiday setting. Coach Monika Heller gets the voices of the participants going with playful and intense exercises before taking care of the rhetorical fine-tuning concerning clarity, dynamics, intonation and choice of words. The training starts today and takes place on 2 nights in the course of a rhetoric basic course, there is a continuation course next week. Important: wear comfortable clothes!

Lilo’s
“Look, grandma had this in her living room!”, is something that shop owner Beate Hautzenberger hears constantly – no wonder, as there are only vintage furniture and vintage objects here. Lilo’s looks like a small, grungy sister of Lichterloh in Gumpendorferstraße. The difference? The prices! If the original charm of a piece of furniture matters to you, you will definitely find something in these bright rooms. The big selection ranges from chairs to everyday stuff, from an Italian classic bureau to a huge clock face from Wiener Städtische. What an adorable Villa Villekulla!

Freiluft
They self-confidently call themselves “the City Terrace”, and true, the 1st district didn’t have something like this until now. As of recently, cocktails are served on the roof of the skyscraper in Herrengasse (Vienna’s oldest skyscraper) – with a breathtaking view of the city. The rooftop bar is not particularly big and furnished in a somewhat pop-up-manner, but there is hardly a more romantic way to have “drinks with a view” above all the Palais roofs and church towers in Vienna. Normally, there’s no food at the rooftop bar. If you make a reservation beforehand, though, you can order pizza and antipasti.
