"Heya Girls!"
There will be quite a big crowd of lateral thinkers and creative heads, tinkerers and DIY-queens romping about there again – and your CitySpotterGirl right in the middle of it. Because the Maker Faire is taking place on the weekend and it’s surpassing itself this year. Close to 900 exhibitors present their innovative ideas on topics like recycling, bio-hacking (gee, what’s that?), crafting & needlework, energy & sustainability, fashion, food, art and design for two days. And since I haven’t yet eaten anything today, I’m particularly looking forward to the 3D Chocolate Printer and the automated Crêpes Robot. The Timecruiser (photo) will get its turn after snacking, you can find it in the outdoor area. Apart from the unusual exhibitors, the programme also includes 40 workshops, 30 lectures and numerous join-in stations. At CitySpotterGirl’s stand, you can create brightly coloured paper pieces with the help of the Wiener Musterbuch. And the first two readers who send us an email will each win two tickets for the Faire!

Wishing you a discovery-rich week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

We like: relaxed and most importantly individualistic shopping! Nine designers have come together in a small but nice pop-up on Gumpendorfer Straße in order to offer for sale the highlights from their current collections. Including pretty linbags – upcycled backpacks produced in Neubau, long shirts and dresses fashioned with prominent airbrush art, fashion with flashy patterns by Edith Langer and jewellery art from old originals by Dorothea Kraus as well as stylish jackets and coats by the Budapest twins ille-olla – real eye-catchers, like everything here!

 Brotkost
Brotkost Take-Away
For this we envy the people in Josefstadt a bit! Because “Brotkost”, so far only caterer and deliverer of open sandwiches with ingenious toppings, has opened its first take-away there. No sandwich is like the other here, every organic slice is made by hand – and they have the right things for every hungry lioness, no matter if veggie fan or meat-lover. From a sweet sandwich with cream cheese, Nutella and raspberries to a spicy one with curry-humus, vanilla carrots and pistachios. If your mouth is watering already: the colourful Brotkost can be (pre)-ordered online.

 Odeon Theater
Ulrike Kaufmann – Life’s Work
An exciting exhibition in memory of one of the great ones: Ulrike Kaufmann, who died in 2014, was a costume designer and actress. But most of all, she was the co-founder of the Serapions ensemble and made an important contribution to the fascinating imagery of the dance theatre performances with her fantastic costumes. The beautiful Odeon-Theater, her long-time domain, now exhibits costumes, dolls, and stage settings from forty years of intensive work. Namely in the workshops where most of it was created. Brilliant!

 Element of Crime
Element of Crime
Simply legendary: the German band around singer and writer Sven Regener have been playing their songs for more than 30 years. And they release their records just the way they like, one after the other. A strange mix of folk rock and blues, art rock and children’s songs, noise fest or corny melody, no matter if the sound fits the current Zeitgeist or not. The new album “Schafe, Monster und Mäuse” has turned out long and ultra-psychedelic and of course it’s full of cool new songs that Element of Crime fans are going to love. You can listen in here!

 Dayada
Dayada
Very pretty things! The still young label Dayada produces modern designs made from traditionally woven Sri-Lankan fair-trade fabrics. Including summery jackets, shawls, pillowcases, table runners and accessories. The things are not as colourful as you may expect now, but very chic in black and white, as well. For the first time, Dayada can now be shopped during a three-day popup, with it they serve Ceylon tea and snacks from Sri Lanka. And supporting the weavers in Sri Lanka is also an important statement against the fashion industry!

Garden Day at Vetmed
Yes, you read that correctly – the Veterinärmedizinische Universität doesn’t just take care of animals but also of plants. They actually have a Botanical Garden there, too! Today’s Garden Day invites you to explore it and also stock up on greens from anise to lemon balm at a Young Plants Market. Aside from garden herbs, aroma plants, medicinal plants, spice plants, you will also find organic vegetable plants and fruit plants. Pet owners can get information on which plants are toxic for their darlings, plus you can acquire useful knowledge on herb cultivation.

Diversity Ball
The young man in the tailcoat elegantly whirls the woman in the beautiful dress across the dance floor. She is blind, he is deaf. Two lesbians are still debating who is to lead this time, all around are celebs and artists. The Diversity Ball intends to take a stand in favor of a colourful society, it connects people regardless of origin and religion, with or without handicap, hetero- or homosexual, old or young. It’s being celebrated at the classy Kursalon with eccentric performances by the “Desperate Show Girls” or a “Yodelling Drag Queen”, sign language rap and a Humana fashion show.

Jane’s Walk
You can now stroll through Vienna on amusing detours and unknown shortcuts! Because everyone who knows some hidden paths or wants to share neighbourhood secrets can simply organise private tours. These original “Jane’s Walks” take place at the beginning of May – in memory of city planner Jane Jacobs – in many cities all over the world. In Vienna, they take the storytelling to Gumpendorfer Straße, to Althangrund, through green havens or to places where you can flirt best, according to a singles coach. You can register your own “Jane’s Walk” here.

Jewish Film Festival
Shalom! More than 40 films about Judaism are currently being shown on cinemas screens in the course of the Jewish Film Festival. This year’s thematic theme is “family”, which is portrayed both in a humorous and in a serious way. Today, Votivkino is also showing three episodes of the unconventional feminist tv series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”. Another hot tip for next Wednesday is “Tel Aviv On Fire”. The new film of Israeli-Palestinian director Sameh Zoabi highlights in a humorous way what unites the divided country, namely: telenovelas ;-)

Women Who Run With The Wolves
Well, CitySpotterGirl is curious: the great, archaic women’s power book “Women Who Run With The Wolves” by C. P. Estés is set to premiere today as a play. It was the strong imagery around bones, wolves, the Arctic, the ocean and fishing that has entrenched itself so deeply in director Lilian Matzke that she wanted to bring it to the stage, as well. There is no need for speaking in the sense of dialogue in this production, the communication is taken over by a human-sized skeleton puppet, its puppeteer and illustrations that are projected to the stage.

Iroquois Great Law of Peace
Tom Porter, whose other name is Sakokwenionkwas, is a Mohawk Elder of the Bear Clan in New York and long-time council member of the Iroquois Confederacy. Today, the prominent indigenous activist is in Vienna to pass on his knowledge at two events. In the afternoon, he will talk about the “Great Law of Peace”: the 800-year-old Iroquois constitution is still a model for the future from which we can learn a lot. His evening lecture will be about the “Seven Generation”-concept of responsibility, sustainability and ecology. Impressive!

Build Etageres
The best thing you can do with old plates! You pick out some that match in style and connect them with a rod to create a decorative étagère. It’s not all that easy, however, since you have to drill holes into the porcelain – and for that you need expert instruction and the right tools. In today’s workshop, Emöke Huemer and Maria Sulzer show you all the tricks and illustrate all the individual drilling steps, afterwards you can build two étagères yourself. They have pretty plates and rods there, you are welcome to bring your own dishes.

 Judith Schimany
Judith Schimany
Uncanny! On first sight, you could really mistake them with one of the old masterpieces, that’s how close Judith Schimany’s paintings come to the art of Biedermeier. Not abstract, not modern, but her plant pictures and landscape paintings show her love for detail. Matching the green month of delightful May, the artist now presents her newest works in her home district at Spittelberg. Among them are lovingly arranged aquarelles of flowers that conjure spring onto the walls or oil paintings of lush green river sceneries. Vernissage is today!

EU Election: women-political perspective
The European Union might be obligated to further gender equality, and there is even a committee in the European Parliament for Women’s Rights and Gender Equality. But what European policy measures do the candidates for the European Parliament want to take? What are the priorities of the different parties with regard to women in particular? Female representatives of the five canvassing parties will discuss all this at Club alpha today – however, Karoline Edtstadler, ÖVP candidate for the EU elections on 26 May, had to cancel last-minute.

 Rebecca Lou
Rebecca Lou
She was raised in a small Danish village and being a small revolutionary even then, Rebecca Lou soon fled to the punk-rock scene of Copenhagen. In her love for music but also on the streets of the city, she lived out the riot lifestyle as a member of a girl biker gang. As the voice of the new women’s movement and with her power-rock à la „Bitch U Look Good”, the singer embodies feminism and women’s rights, her meaningful lyrics and her “in your face”-attitude tell the story of how she became a self-confident woman. Very cool and most powerful live!

Our brain in constant digital overload
Sad but a fact: we have all gotten used to our little electronic stress perpetrators so much that we don’t give their effects enough consideration. In his lecture, neurobiologist and bestselling author Bernd Hufnagl tells interesting and humorous stories about the human brain and its quirks in the digital world. First and foremost though, he offers practical advice on how to avoid the negative effects of constantly being online without having to renounce digital media and their various possibilities.

RelaxGarden Vienna
Pink plaid trousers, jeans jackets with big dots, overalls with funny cuts, dresses in loud colours, and jumpers with goose prints: you quickly realise that you have landed in a somewhat different fashion niche here. For the owner of this small fashion store with bright wooden furniture at Neubaugasse is London-Tokyo based fashion designer Shinya Abe, who has just opened his first branch in Vienna. Brave fashionistas and colour fans can mostly purchase styles of the owner’s label „Zacaro” here, but also some hip pieces of other Japanese and South Korean indie labels. And it’s not overpriced!

Weinhandwerk
There are corners in Vienna where you would never think that you’re actually in a city of over a million inhabitants. In the picturesque Kellergasse in Stammersdorf, for example, or at the street’s end, up Bisamberg on the left, at Weinhandwerk. Theoretically, it’s a Heuriger but in truth it’s one of the most idyllic spots in Vienna. In the middle of vineyards, right next to flower meadows and gnarled trees, they serve their own organic wine inside the fancy glass gazebo – and offer a great cuisine! They cook a lot with wild herbs, their own smoked meat and wonderfully arranged cold cuts. So delicious!
