"Heya Girls!"
Getting all dressed up in summery-colourful Dirndl is as much part of summer as swimming in the turquoise water in my home at Attersee. It’s also the home of family Tostmann, after all ;-) In Vienna, however, I feel a bit, well, exotic in traditional costume. There I prefer to dance around in a brightly coloured and patterned Dirndl of the fashion label “time4africa”. Aren’t they beautiful! Designer and Africa aficionada Imma Baumgartner, who spent many years at a farm in Tanzania herself, chooses wonderfully patterned fabrics for her creations on site in Africa. All of them are produced in small quantities using traditional methods – like batik or printed with hand-carved stamps. And then they’re doing the tailoring in Austria: Apart from traditional costumes, the collection also includes dresses, skirts, tops, and accessories like purses. And this gorgeous cross culture couture can now be admired, tried on, and bought for 2 days during the Open Showroom. Guess you’ll just have to step out on the Tostmann’s for a minute ;-)

Festival Opening dotdotdot
Brevity is the soul of wit! And in the case of the Short Film Festival dotdotdot it’s clearly the beautiful location as well: the screenings take place in the cosy garden of the Museum of Folk Art. The program includes venturesome, vibrant and moving short films that offer unusual perspectives of the world. And many of the ca. 150 films are followed by talks, workshops, concerts, and parties. For today’s Festival Opening, they have Welcome Drinks and Gérard Depardieu in a 16-minute cinematic “ Rhapsody”. More intimate summer cinema tips here!

A very nice project that Andrea Zehetner has put together here! She teaches photography to refugees from Afghanistan and Iran and regularly does photo safaris with them. The idea behind it is to give them a medium that works in a nonverbal way which enables them to tell their own stories. The eight young men document their lives between borders and freedom – for one of them birds are the symbol of freedom, for another it’s the lives of Austrian women. Now the expressive photographs can be seen in a little exhibition for the first time.

R& Film-Productions flea market
An unusual flea market – and not just because there’s almost exclusively new and barely used things to snatch here! That’s because the organiser is a film production company that mainly shoots advertising films. And for that you need quite a bunch of pretty props like small furniture, clothing, and all kinds of decorative articles. Since the creative “R&”-crew also runs a bar, they sell off tableware that they don’t need there anymore. The setting is nice too: in an inner courtyard, with cool DJ music as well as food & drinks being served from the adjacent R&Bar.

Among other time periods, they travel back to the Middle Ages where there’s a big arts and crafts market for nostalgic browsing and cooking artists tempt you with a feudal banquet. Today’s program includes knight fights, musical show acts by Rhiannon and Abinferis, as well as a spectacular fire show. Medievally garmented people don’t pay entry, by the way! The main act is a big fashion show on the State Opera stage at 19:00, during which labels and designers like Jones, Genio Del Tempo or Dali Oleschko present their collections, and in-between they play live music.

Yoga on the Jetty
Now, you all know the things yoga can do: it lowers the stress level, stretches the muscles and strengthens the immune system. And makes you happy! Especially when taking place outdoors right on the water. Like the yoga sessions on the jetty near the venue "Bootshaus" at the lower Alte Donau. From today, the pros of the yoga studio "natural High" hold slow-paced morning-yoga-sessions there every Sunday: with sun salute, basic yoga poses, and breathing and relaxation techniques. Ina Regen captivates you with the clarity of her voice and the pleasant warmth of her texts, dialect without kitsch. You just leave your bike at a station, enjoy the evening at Danube Canal and afterwards you get your serviced bike back. The checks focus on wheels, brakes and gearing, and you can get smaller repairs like brake lining change or flat tyres done in exchange for a small contribution for costs of materials. Comedy Mamis at Tschauner
You can’t go wrong with an evening at the weird-funny open-air theatre Tschauner in summer. On today’s program, they don’t have a quirky improv theatre play but an (almost) exclusively female-filled comedy night. All the better! On the initiative of local heroine Petra Kreuzer the “Comedy Mamis” are coming together for the 5th time to passionately fire jokes at the audience and warble funny songs. World-famous for the acoustics of the Golden Hall that millions of people marvel at during the New Year’s concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the famous building has many more fascinating stories up its sleeve. Concert-goers usually don’t pay too much attention to them in the bustling crowds, but today, you can capture them on camera. No shortage of magnificent photo subjects here!

Beauty and Retrospection
With her pictures, Spanish painter Carmen Marcos wants to visualise the search for beauty and to share this beauty with others. That’s what she’s doing right now with an exhibition at Galerie Sandpeck, which is showing her harmonious works. For five years now, the artist has also been keeping an “artist’s diary” with daily paintings – mostly in watercolours – of things and places that she encounters and which she wants to remember in detail later on. They might be flowers just as well as landscapes or sometimes even a pair of red shoes. Now to be seen in Vienna for the very first time!

The 90s
The 90s were a time of upheaval in Europe – the Iron Curtain had fallen, the Cold War was over. Thanks to the growing globalisation, the art scene really perked up. Vienna found itself in the centre of a scene that opened up to the east. At MUSA, there is now an extensive exhibition titled “The 90s” that illustrates the colourful art spectrum back then. By means of paintings, sculpting, photography, performance & video art they attempt to answer questions about politics and the environment as well as (marking a new focus starting today!) kitsch, gender-topics and irony.

Meena Cryle
She’s got the blues! You can immediately hear that Austrian singer and guitarist Meena Cryle knows a little something about blues. Her deeply honest root-music with its many facets has also made her quite successful internationally. Today, the singer-songwriter will be playing her program “Private Moments”, in ingenius collaboration with guitarist and composer Chris Fillmore plus band. This fine mix of Southern Soul, Americana, gospel, rock and blues sure makes for some great summer-sound! Check out what her cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire” sounds like.

For the non-French ladies: Petit Dej (pronounced: pohtee desh) is short for “petit-déjeuner”, which means “breakfast”. And this adorable boulangerie-patisserie certainly makes all your breakfast-wishes come true. Once you manage to get past the long counter full of sweet insanity from tarte to pain au chocolat in this charmingly furnished venue, you can choose wonderfully hearty things, like omelettes with different toppings, croques or salads.
