"Heya Girls!"
Attentive readers among you will certainly not have failed to notice that I have a soft spot for colours ;-) So it’s no surprise that I’m Annie Sloan’s biggest fan: the British lady is one of the main players in the vintage boom and has ennobled herself to the rank of “Queen of Paint” with her bestseller about “Decorative Paint Techniques”. Her patented “Chalk Paint” in countless beautiful colour shades has contributed to making life more colourful and stylish in, by this time, 55 countries. The best thing about it: the eco-friendly lime paint looking a bit like crayon adheres to every surface – even to leather! So you’re saved the tedious process of sanding. Works great and is really simple – even I can do it! There are workshops on this at Möbelei in the 15th district on a regular basis, by the way. Next Saturday, they show how to re-design smaller items of furniture using Chalk Paint. It’s pretty, trendy, and makes super happy!
Wishing you a brightly coloured week,
Your CitySpotterGirl
Die Möbelei, Ullmannstraße 47, 1150 Vienna. 24 February 10:00 to 17:00. 115 €. Web

Velvet Room
Cin Cin! For six weeks starting today, worker bees can enjoy their well-earned after-work-drink in Vienna’s coolest and (still!) most secret bar. Because starting right now, the landmarked former k&k Kunsttischlerei (artisan joinery) is hosting Reinhard Pohorec’s Velvet Room. He’s a certified “world class”-spirit drinks master and transforms the historic Art Nouveau-rooms into a really extraordinary bar, dance- and party location! They serve Haute Dogs, Pavlova and the finest signature drinks, the music is sometimes retro, sometimes funky disco! But only until 2 April!

Margaret Stonborough-Wittgenstein
Philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein’s „little” sister was the grande dame of Vienna Moderne: Klimt painted her portrait, she was an intellectual, salonière, and builder of the ascetic-cubistic Wittgenstein city palace in the third district. So in a nutshell – a highly fascinating person! Her glamorous parties attracted politicians and artists, and she pursued – uncommon for a woman in her time – studies of mathematics, physics, and medicine. Author Margret Geiner has dedicated a biography to this exciting life, today is the book presentation at the Klimt Villa!

Arotin & Serghei: Metamorphosis
Whatever you see or don’t see, maybe because you don’t even want to see it, it always lies in the eye of the beholder ;-) Either way, starting immediately, you can plunge into surfaces of illusion and go looking for inspiration in the honourable rooms of W&K Galerie. The artist duo Arotin & Serghei are currently guests here with their congenial digital installations, photovoltaic cell-pictures, and sound galaxies. Which were worked on scientifically, artistically, and technologically in so many ways that they resemble light-oceans and Star Wars lightsabers. Particularly cool: the “Infinite Screen”! Today’s vernissage!

„The Female Soul“
As multi-faceted, contradictory, and highly complex as the female emotional life is the art from Stefania Zorzi. And the well-known Italian-Austrian photo-artist has got to know what motivates and drives women in life since a) she is one herself and b) she has the gift of catching meaningful moments in pictures, videos, and sculptures. There is now a big exhibition dedicated to her work at Galerie lichtraum eins. To be admired: powerful women’s portraits series “Boxes” and other ingenious selftimer-intimate confession-pics! Today is the vernissage!

Florentina Holzinger: Apollon
Viennese choreographer Florentina Holzinger knows no reservations when it’s about doing a new remix of unusual genres. Armed with black humour, elements of the circus freak shows, and the 1960s-live-art, six naked women conquer George Balanchine’s classical ballet of the same name from 1928 today – and aim for the neo-liberal body cult and its voyeuristic mechanisms. In ballet shoes and with weights on their shoulders, they throw the conceited god Apollon off his throne on Mount Parnassus. After all, they are themselves the stars of this show ;-)

Demeter Wine Days
It’s been almost 50 years that the Austrian Demeter Association was brought into being. And today, the holistic agriculture concept, which is based on Rudolf Steiner’s spiritual-esoteric world view, among others, is fully in line with the current trend. And also popular with international wine growers and wine savourers, who will present the newest Demeter trends now for three days (tight lecture schedule today from 9 o’clock) or meet tomorrow at the big Wine Fair including tastings. And for 27 February, several field trips to Demeter wine growers around Vienna are on the agenda. Cheers!

Now Matzleinsdorfer Platz isn’t necessarily the kind of area you’d choose to go for a stroll through the city. But today, we’re going there anyway: the club read!!ing room is hosting a discovery tour through the neighbourhood between Wiedner Hauptstraße and Gürtel. Among others, the exploration will include the former orthopaedic hospital in Gassergasse, the Theodor Körner housing complex, or the “window to heaven" above Kliebergasse. And you’ll learn why there is a "celeb silo" in Margareten and why the district is a true handball-city.

Chamber music at Eroicasaal
Today there are two good reasons to dress up and stride to the Baroque Palais Lobkowitz: first of all, you will get to enjoy a wonderful chamber concert by duo Corri, consisting of the two musical university professors Helena Dearing (vocals) and Mirjam Schröder (harp). And second of all, it’s also the historic ambiance of the beautiful Eroica room that is a pleasure to the senses. It makes Joseph Haydn’s “Welsh Airs“, Benjamin Britten’s “8 Folksong Arrangements“ and Ludwig van Beethoven’s „Schweizer Lied“-variations all the more touching.

Alice Merton
Who knows, it might be the last time for the newcomer to play on a small stage like WUK, the future ones will probably be bigger! Her debut single “No Roots” turned into a super hit, now she’s off to her first big Headline tour through Europe. Traveling from country to country is also the topic of her songs: even when just a child, the native of Germany moved eleven times and also lived in England and Munich, apart from Canada. Now she lives in Berlin. At today’s Vienna gig, you can dance to many new and powerful pop songs, so be quick to get tickets and be surprised.

What am I?
As of late, a new quiz event at Schauspielhaus has become the talk and more importantly fun of the town! The format is called Spiel & Brot, taking once popular quiz shows and filling them with current questions and Zeitgeist topics. Unfortunately, CitySpotterGirl missed the first round of conspiracy-theory-guessing à la Jeopardy but today, she will be in the audience! Loosely based on Robert Lembke, it’s all “What am I?” and “What piggy do you choose?” even though tricky inter-personal concepts like “irony” and “yell” have to be guessed.

Grease - The Musical
Sigh! The iconic musical Grease is in Vienna, automatically reminding us elderly people of youth, youthful indiscretions and all-night dancing. If you, too, feel like time travelling back to the teenager realm of the 50s and if you want to join Danny and Sammy in loving, suffering and singing, make your way to MQ today. They are showing the amazing, multi-media restaging of the 40-year-old musical classic. DSDS-star Alexander Jahnke and the likeable Veronika Riedl from Upper Austria are following in the footsteps of John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. Rocking and sentimental!

Rio Gostoso
Food that is considered “original” is usually not that tasty. This however is not the case in Vienna’s first Tapiocaria! They deserve that label because they offer really unusual Brazilian street-food: tapioca bread. They are tasty and also healthy, being produced from the flour of the cassava root. And that can be taken literally: you can watch how the powder turns into a kind of tramezzino bread during heating. You can choose from 15 spicy and sweet fillings, for example cheese-palm heart-bacon or banana-cinnamon. A friendly mini store where you need to bring some patience.
