Tipps der Stadtspionin

editorial

"Heya Girls!"
I don't know any city in Central Europe in which small shops, haberdasheries, groceries and fashion retail stores managed to survive as long as in Vienna. Even though many of them have been closed in the meantime, you can still find traces of those shops in the streets: old signs, beautiful writings and cranky adverts! The new festival "Sign Week Vienna" follows the traces they have left. It is marked by Viennese shop fronts and public typography. Moreover, it shows old advert letterings in a new light. In a photo exhibition, the neon letterings of the city of Havana will be compared with lost Viennese signs, and paying a visit to the Viennese Museum of Signmakers (the only museum of this kind in Europe!) is a must anyway. In addition to this, you can discover old ghostletters during guided walks through the city, get to know different stores and their history or – definitely my favourite – experiment with curves, ovals and strokes in handlettering workshops. Brilliant!

Wishing you an energetic week

World Press Photo
Not for the faint at heart, but a unique review of last year's events! Almost 80.000 pictures were submitted to the World Press Photo Contest, and 45 photographers from 25 countries were awarded in eight categories. This year, the selection of the World Press Photo of the Year has been the subject of heated debates: The picture by Turkish photographer Burhan Ozbilici shows the assassination of the Russian Ambassador to Turkey by a young Turkish police officer at the opening of an art exhibition in Ankara. Gallery WestLicht will show the best pictures; Federal Chancellor Kern will open the exhibition tonight!

Minden
A funny-fresh genre mix from Portland, Oregon: The five charming musicians of the band Minden combine cool retrochic with power pop and more than just one pinch of prog rock: Not only visually (this styling!), but also musically. And since the witty group is a feast for one's eyes and ears, CitySpotterGirl strongly advises to visit the sound museum Haus der Musik tonight! The new album of this US band enchants with „Sweet, Simple Things“ – catchy tunes, good lyrics and a sound which is great to dance to. Take a listen and get some disco feeling into your day here.

Aki Matsuri – Japanese autumn festival
Today, we Viennese can feel like tourists at Schönbrunn Palace and visit Japan in the Japanese stone garden on the palace grounds. The Japanese embassy invites to the autumn festival into the pretty haven of peace which is located between the palm house and the main entrance of the zoo. They provide us with everything we Europeans associate with Japan - apart from Sushi ;-) Japanese songs with Miki Sasakawa, tako drums, origami paper folding and a stunning tea ceremony with Somei Fuhrmann create a Far Eastern atmosphere. In case of bad weather, the festival will take place on Sunday.

Franziskus Kirtag
I only mention this because - country-bred person that I am - I'm totally into fairs. And such a kirmess takes place on Sunday at the Franciscan courtyard in the 1st district: the Franciscan fair. Since it is organised by Viennese bakers, confectioners and butchers, numerous culinary delicacies will be waiting for the visitors: Savoury sausages, bread (Franciscan bread), cakes and pastries like the chocolaty Franziskus-Spitz. The total net profit of the culinary delights will be used to supply people in need with food in the Franciscan monastery. In case of rain, the fair will take place at the refectory of the monks.

Pregesbauer has been doing all of her laundry that way for years. She will give tips on how to prepare, collect, dry, store and chop chestnuts. In addition, she will speak about storage life and hand-washing. The workshop is for free and you'll receive a written tutorial!

What is justice and how is it distributed?
Do the poor really get poorer and the rich richer? Fact is that economic inequality and existential insecurity exist worldwide. In Austria, taxation of labour is very high. Taxation of assets, however, remains quite low. Do we need utopia and visions to offer necessary alternatives to existing systems? Does the situation require a change of course? Many enthralling questions that will be answered from a feminist point of view during a debate at ega tonight. Among the guests will be author Marlene Streeruwitz and inequality researcher Judith Derndorfer.
