editorial

"Heya Girls!"
Luckily, I’m pretty good at repressing memories. I always forget that every time we produce a CitySpotterGirl-book, all the stress makes us want to tear our hair out. But then, when a truck drives from the printing house to Vienna, filled up with many colourful editions of “Wiener Entdeckungen” – then all is well in the world again! Just like this week: as of now, you can purchase “Entdeckungen 9” – in every book shop, in our online shop, or from us personally at the WeihnachtsQuartier at MQ next weekend. The extraordinarily pretty book offers inspiration and all sorts of ideas on where you could go to in Vienna, what to explore, do, shop, gourmandise, and give away as gifts. The timing is perfect, for in just 4 weeks Christmas will come a-knocking, so you have to take time to consider which of the exciting “Wiener Entdeckungen” you will put under the golden pine cones for kith and kin. Plus, there’s a special treat in the book: the best bars in Vienna! Have fun browsing, sample-reading, and buying, my dears!

Wishing you a discovery-rich week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

 MOE
Christmas at Mölkersteig
What a picturesque corner for buying presents! From today, you can shop for pretty and joyful things at the “Atelier am Mölkersteig” by architect Judith Eiblmayr and Agnes Parfy, they also offer an accompanying culture programme. On all advent-weekends, you can purchase cute toast-bird feeders by artist Claudia Rannow, extravagant Ukrainian fashion by “MOE” or beautiful coverlets by Alexandra Pruscha, plus from vintage things. Plus, there are also culinary products like oil, honey, and “literature cookies”. Oh yes, there’s punch, too, of course, duh!

Gemeinsame Wagnisse
Not with us! Against the backdrop of the global far-right gaining strength and the anti-feminist politics of all those Trumps, Orbans & co, a new women’s movement has been forming since 2017. A symposium at Belvedere now deals with these “Movements in Feminism”. Yesterday, they started with a screening of the horror-satire “Dandy Dust”, tomorrow it continues with interesting lectures, workshops, talks, collective writing, joint networking activities, and accompanying film screenings all about feminist issues. For free and in English!

 Camille Eder
Torterie Camille
Sweet name for a thoroughly sweet enterprise: Camille Eder’s little cake studio opens in Döbling today. Just like the name of her bakery (Torte = cake in German), the owner is a mix of France and Austria. Born in Paris and raised in Vienna, the sweet variety has quasi been a part of her since her days in the cradle. The newcomer exclusively makes her cakes with spelt flour, organic Austrian eggs, and organic milk products, by the way, and the chocolate comes from Belgium. For today’s opening, the future customers are being baited with fine samples, coffee & tea!

So there will be a big bustle, but also tons of great gifts like gorgeous china by Eva Mayer, original upcycling bags made from fish feeding bags by Sissi Vogler, or textile jewellery by Daniela Taneva. And CitySpotterGirl is there as well – and has tied up very special book gift sets for you! So: drop by!

Jedermann Reloaded
He who might just be Austria’s most exciting man right now is raging through Stephansdom today! Theatre-berserker Philipp Hochmair became a talking point during the Salzburg Festival when he spontaneously filled in for fallen ill “Jedermann” Tobias Moretti and managed to shine despite zero preparation time. In part this has been due to his working on this role meticulously for his own project “Jedermann Reloaded”. With his band, he makes Hofmannsthal’s character into a rock star and slips into all the roles himself with a passionate effort. Simply brilliant!

 Günter Grüner
Günter Grüner: Scandinavia
Sometimes the life of a journalist is really hard! For example, when, for a tip like this one, you have to look through photos that awake a more than painful wanderlust in you. After all, Scandinavia is one of CitySpotterGirl’s dream destinations! In any case, the multimedia show by Günter Grüner comes warmly recommended, the likable globetrotter has a gripping style of narration and takes fantastic photos. This time, he spent half a year travelling in Sweden, Norway and Finland by foot, bike, canoe and camper; you can catch a first impression of it here!

mumok Art Book Day
The first Art Book Fair is celebrating its debut at mumok today. The rapidly growing interest in art books is a world-wide trend, which has thus arrived here as well. For one day, the book as an art form takes centre stage (with free admission): representatives of the experimental and independent art book scene from Austria and Germany from Gloria Glitzer from Berlin to Carivari from Leipzig present a selection of their works. There is the opportunity to engage in conversations with the artists and publishers, and they also show films. New and exciting!

So, dear ladies, here come the coordinates for Sunday’s main input of calories: the La Vitrina in Schiffamtsgasse! Definitely on the menu: avocados, poached eggs, creative mimosas, and treats with a “Mexican Twist”. You can feast à la carte, the dishes are between 6 and 10 euros. And for everyone who hasn’t been there yet, the location of the feast is very nice as well!

Thanks to the Viennese “Queen Silvia community”, there is once again the extremely neat Swedish Yule bazaar taking place. The thoroughly Nordic programme is spreading Christmas cheer at the Ministry of Health building: Lucia, the Swedish Queen of Lights plus candlelit-crown comes floating by, traditional Lucia-songs are sung, “Glögg”-hot mulled wine and Swedish delicacies are served. For now, it is winter but the next summer will surely come. And with it the new and biggest Austrian Open-Air Reggae Festival. To shorten the waiting period for this (and the warm season!), cool Jamaican reggae-acts fire up the fans at the WUK during a one-day Winter Edition of the Festival today. The warm-up tapping is taken on by Andre Johnson, better known as Jah Mason, then it continues with the energetic Rastafari Turbulence – nomen est omen! – and then the Roots Reggae legend “Eek a Mouse” makes the room boil. Culinary Presents
Now, my ladies, today we move Christkind’s workshop into the kitchen or rather the kitchen-studio in the 6th district. For there, “Culinary Presents” are being produced in the evening. Course instructor Tina Ganser has come up with some nice ideas, from self-mixed baking mixes neatly layered in preserving jars to prettily packaged special-jams. The sustainable gift packagings are conjured up from tin cans, storage jars & co, and everyone will go home with two to three finished self-made presents (and many ideas!).

First, she cut national funding for childcare by 30 million, then she cut funding for women’s organisations: being Minister for Women and Family Affairs is a tiring task – and certainly no picnic in the current administration. At today’s “Frau in der Wirtschaft” Ladies Lounge, Juliane Bogner-Strauß, who was born in southern Styria, talks to Martha Chultz and gives some insights into her political work, talks about her career and her journey from the successful, appreciated scientist to the ÖVP politician. Begehren
For many people, their own desire is like an encrypted and locked off room. What are we doing there alone with us, in twos or more? What is it that we really desire and why is it so complex to find that out? For the theatre night “Begehren” (desire), author Gesine Schmidt has conducted interviews with six people between the ages of 26 and 75 who offer insights into their sexual biographies. Today’s Austrian premiere promises a sensual journey of discovery, accompanied by live music and mixed with choreographic elements that sharpen and contrast the (not uncomical) text.

Great idea: getting some fresh air outside after work to artistically capture the urban wilderness! Today, this week’s creative programme by artist Sabine Freitag is taking off, everyone can join in. Tina Dico
Her mind-blowing voice causes pleasant goose bumps, at times she strikes a rocky tone, other times she is poetically reflective. Danish singer-songwriter Tina Dico often gives the impression of being Nordic-cool and sombre, then again she seems faerie-like gentle (she lives in Iceland!), in any case she’s a terrific musician and singer. She’s long been a star in her country, has already released ten albums – and her German fan community is constantly growing as well. It’s time for her voice to permanently ingrain itself into the Austrians’ auditory canals too! Today, the charismatic lady plays at WUK, listen in here.

 Lisette Model / Nan Goldin
Model / Arbus / Goldin
Stunning photo exhibition! Today, there are about 100 works of three great American female photographers to be seen at Galerie Westlicht. The pictures of Lisette Model, Diane Arbus and Nan Goldin broaden the view of society in a radical way – by the others, by those marginalised by society, and by eccentric personalities like drag queens. Lisette Model, born in Vienna and emigrated to New York, has created this new style of street photography, Diane Arbus was her student. Nan Goldin has done a lot of photographing in the New York subculture, her imagery later coining the „Heroin Chic”.

Etaro
Art historian Julia Stricker has always been drawn to fashion. 2015, she finally founded her label “Etaro”, which is about what she likes to wear herself – and what she’s been missing in Vienna. Since her stylish “clean-chic” collections were well received at markets, she now opened her own store. Inside, you immediately notice the beautiful play of colours: not gaudy but unobtrusively colourful and in easy-to-combine nuances. The current collection consists of feminine woollen dresses, delicately patterned silk blouses, “power suits”, and classically chic coats.

Porto
The elegant but always informal Design Hotel Triest in Wieden was renovated and considerably extended last year. In addition to the well-known top restaurant “Collio”, a new bistro now opens in the hotel this week. With all its copper, leather and equipped with a travertine bar, the “dock bar” Porto gives off a bit of a male vibe but is actually really beautiful. The floor-to-ceiling sliding windows open to Rilkeplatz – and since this used to be the base for the stagecoach connection between Vienna and Trieste, the menu offers mainly Italian delicacies. Which are all delicious!
