"Heya Girls!"
Clearly: Vienna is waking up again! The sluggish summer months are over, it is getting lively in the city. The Staatsoper under the leadership of the new director Bogdan Roscic has started after months of forced break with a bang – a stunning Madama Butterfly production. The Burgtheater opens again this Friday, as well, head Martin Kusej himself staged “Life Is a Dream”. And apart from this “official” Vienna, things will get exciting on Saturday in backyards in particular. Household communities and residents of the 5th district will open their courtyards for a flea market, and bargains and refreshments will also be waiting in the courtyard of the Amtshaus at Schönbrunner Strasse 54. When exchanging and sharing, you not only get to know people, you can also explore hidden places in Margareten that are never publicly accessible. One week later the same thing is happening on the Wieden. Second-hand treasure huntresses and vintage addicts will find cheap clothes, knick-knacks, tableware and antiques there.
Wishing you a discovery-rich week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Stay with the trouble!
Of all birthdays, the women of the Kosmos Theater had to celebrate their 20th online, but today they are opening the new season with concentrated power. Two German rappers from the foremost feminist front will perform: Lady Bitch Ray reads from her book “Yalla, Feminism” about the male-dominated hip-hop scene and “Fuckademia” talks about the same at universities. EsRAP, the dynamic hip-hop duo from Ottakring picks up the ball and introduces us to their world: Tschuschistan. At 17:00 it starts with a free photo vernissage by Bettina Frenzel!

 Margaret And Hermione
Archive Sale at Margaret And Hermione
Maybe during the Indian summer, there will be another chance for a wee swim: namely in the upbeat swimsuits and bikinis of Margaret And Hermione. The owner Barbara Gölles is only doing an Archive Sale today (!) and lets the prices drop by up to 70%. There are cool swimwear items to get hold of: cross-over tops with edgy prints, high-waist bikini panties and brightly coloured swimsuits. The comfortable fabrics used to be old fishing nets that were fished from the sea and upcycled. Don't think too long – go there, snatch something and then off to the Danube ;-)

Fit for Finance
Give me the dough! Referring, however, not to the quick buck, but to long-term financial provision. Financial market know-how is an advantage for this – and this is exactly what the 3-part course “Fit for Finance” teaches. The first event, already, does away with traditional ways of thinking: the world of finance doesn't have to be complicated, even a simple budget is worth a lot. Experts explain the most important principles of wealth accumulation, investment behaviour and psychological aspects. This is how you become a private investor and your wallet will be happy, too.

 Indigo City
Indigo City
Phew, so what is this exactly? Indigo City is a garden, a stage, a play, a network and a vision. Created by young women working in the cultural sector – bringing together design, dance, performance, music and floristry in a multifaceted way. The whole thing takes place at the West Space, meaning the former Sophien hospital. At today's finale, the art installation “Indigo Hope” will be presented, which has been developed over the past weeks. The evening will end with a park concert by Fräulein Hona (much Icelandic dreaminess) and Hands & Bits.

 Cityfarm Augarten
1. Winter-Veggie Young Plant Market
Snoresville in the frozen patches? As if! Delicacies like pink kale, green pak choi, or leaf mustard flourish in the winterly cold as well. Meaning: the next vegetable season starts right now! If we want to harvest fresh greens in winter with frost and snow, we have to plant now. And that is why City Farm Augarten is organising the first Vienna Winter-Vegetable Young Plant Market. This week and next week they will be selling perennial greens such as garden salads, rucola, sorrel, spinach and miner’s lettuce. Because autumn is the spring of winter ;-)

It gets colourful and creative today in the Börse quarter, for Börsepark turns into an open-air museum for a day. Over 75 artists present their works along a site fence put up around the park specifically for this, featuring everything from aquarelles to abstract paintings and photography – makes 237m of art market! You can take a nice stroll through the park, meet artists, check out art, buy art and win art. The open-air exhibition is accompanied by music and dance. The street-food comes from Churros Don Diego, Risotto Box and the Hilton Vienna. Really cool stuff!

Waves Vienna Festival
A festival where you can discover a lot of music: For three days, the WUK will rock and vibrate electronically. But in a different way than in previous years: due to Corona, the concerts are not played on location but streamed. More than 70 international and local newcomers will be performing, including the wonderfully eccentric Alicia Edelweiss or already better-known ones like Lou Asril. From Rock to Hip Hop to Dub, every direction is represented. So if you want, you can watch at home – or join the public viewing in the WUK-courtyard. Let's go to the hit concert and performance series!

 Japanische Botschaft
Japanese Summer Party Natsumatsuri
Christmas comes but once a year. This also applies to the traditional Japanese summer festival: fortunately, the Japanese embassy does not skip the annual Viennese Natsumatsuri but has decided to do the celebration online because of Corona. For three days, tea ceremonies, videos on the culture and musical performances by impressive Taiko drummers will be broadcast on Facebook. On Saturday there will be an introduction to the beautiful art of Ikebana, the noblest form of flower arranging. And a course will show the art of calligraphy even for beginners.

Atelier Flea Market by Schloss25
Only recently, the all-female art collective “Schloss25” moved into the former hunting lodge, and they are already organising their first studio flea market. Anyone who goes on a fashion hunt here gets a lot of unusual things for little money, such as costumes from music videos, shootings and art performances. Vintage is the clothing from the 1980s to the 2000s, some special accessories are in the style of the 1960s. Designer pieces by Escada, Chanel and Burberry are also available, as well as material for your own art work. Afterwards, don't forget to dig in at the cake buffet ;-)

 Caren Shen, Textilgalerie
At the annual “Artwalk18”, exciting studios, venues and galleries open their doors again: all around and along Währinger Straße, you can discover painting, photography, design and textile art by local artists at the weekend. Abstract forms and bodies, spun from countless threads, are shown in the exhibition “Die Argonautinnen” at Textilgalerie. Goldsmith Sidonie Pacher from “schmuck(e)dinge” preserves in her workshop the almost forgotten technique “fire enamel”. If you want art to come home with you: take a stroll through the “vienna art market”.

 Franzi Kreis
Franzi Kreis: Limelight
When theatre photographer Franzi Kreis publishes an illustrated book, the presentation is as exciting as the theatre itself. The dazzling stars of her pictures even perform live in the pub to celebrate! The show includes her book cover girls, three drag queens, and an acrobat with a good head for heights. Her illustrated book was created in the venues of these artists: at the Burgtheater, the Vienna Festival Weeks and at the Circus Roncalli she captured moments with André Heller and Isabelle Huppert in a spontaneous and unaffected way. Fascinating insights!

 Folklore Tanzclub
Danube Island Dancing
The warm season is slowly coming to an end, but the summer dancing on Danube Island has been extended. Yippee! There, the Folklore Dance Club teaches circle and chain dances on Tuesdays, always contact-free and with social distancing. Especially dances from South-eastern Europe and the surrounding regions are on the programme – they have extra lots of rhythm. Not every step has to be perfect, but the joy of movement is important. And because it's so much fun, you won’t let even rain stop you. In this case, the whirling takes place underneath Reichsbrücke.

Bernhard Eder: Restart
The dreaming has come to an end! Because Bernhard Eder, fixed star in the singer/songwriter heaven of the FM4 generation, is currently reinventing himself. Until now, he was known for his guitar campfire songs with soft indie vocals, but on his seventh album “Reset”, you get to hear groovy home organs, pocket pianos and catchy samples. With some guest musicians in tow he presents the new record today, which sounds electrifying and stirring. To produce such a fresh sound and thus mark an artistic turning point after many years of a musical career? Chapeau!

Free of charge: backpack on trial
As is well known, people in Vienna are switching to bicycles more and more often, especially for the way to the office. All that's missing is a laptop-protecting backpack? You can pick one up at the FREITAG store for a two-week test ride until the end of October. The backpack is as water-repellent and robust as the seat belts and truck tarpaulins it is made of. Reflectors make even nocturnal cyclists stand out from the grey traffic. The test ride doesn't even cost anything: Just choose your favourite piece from the colourful models in yellow, red and blue and start cycling.

After us, the flood
A person stands on the ice which he is hitting with his pick. How long before he falls through? The video shows the short-sighted pursuit of profit and growth despite the climate crisis. It can be seen in the new exhibition “Nach uns die Sintflut (“After us, the flood”) at Kunst Haus Wien, which is presented by the artists personally for the opening. Photos and videos depict the beauty of nature as well as areas destroyed by drought, flood and construction sites. Since there is no “normal” vernissage because of Corona, the entry to the exhibition next weekend is free!

Donauprallhang and city wilderness
No, Erdberger Mais is not food. The “Mais” is an area in the 3rd district – once a loop of the Danube flowed around the Erdberger Mais, where the inhabitants of this suburb cultivated their kitchen gardens. On the bank were the eastern foothills of the line wall built in 1703 and the ice cellars of the Mautner brewery. Remains of these can still be seen today – and in the afternoon a Wien Museum city expedition explores the area between the slaughterhouse grounds and the Erdberg Mais. An excursion into the city wilderness and its exciting history!

CitySpotterGirl always rates venues according to their food and their ambiance. But here I have to note something else first: I haven’t seen such a nice audience as at the ihana in years! The Finnish café looks really pretty (ambience) and has some really unusual things on the menu (food), but a visit to the café turns into an experience because of the wonderful customers and the great boss Hanna Yrjölä. She came as an au pair and stayed. And now she provides us with cinnamon rolls, smörrebröd and above all Karjalanpiirakka with egg butter. Can't be explained, you just have to taste it ;-)
