"Heya Girls!"
We're really not used to winters like this anymore. And as a cold-o-phobe, it's not my favourite time of year either. Too cold, too much coughing. The only thing that helps is to escape to warmer climes – and since I can't afford St Barth, it ended up being St Marx. In a huge tent, over fifty artists are currently spreading true African atmosphere. The acrobats and singers who are performing for the show “Africa! Africa!” (invented by Andre Heller a long time ago) and are touring through Europe come from ten different countries – including Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, Senegal, Egypt, South Africa, the Ivory Coast and the United States. Metre-high human pyramids, spectacular handstand acrobatics, live music and African dances ranging from gumboot dance from South Africa to modern street and break dance will put you in a good mood and make you forget the black ice. As the whole thing takes place in a tent, you should still wear a warm coat ;-)

Wishing you a hot week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Junipa Gold
The band name alone is enough to make you want to listen. When the indie rock band's front woman Mia then brings her singer/songwriter sounds into play, you’re done for. They also provide the basis for the rocky, distorted riffs and beats of her band mates Sascha, Pascal and Fabio. Today, the Voralberger present their EP “Before we turn to dust” with well-known and new songs such as “Low Tide”. The influences of the 4 musicians, which they bring with them from previous bands, are once again unmistakable and give the songs that certain je ne sais quoi – but it's best to listen in yourself!

 Cha·rak·ter Couture
Cha·rak·ter Pop Up Store closes
It certainly had a lot of character! The cute pop-up store of fashion label Cha-rak-ter Couture has always lured us to the cosy St. Elisabethplatz with its eye-catching regional cuisine, fashion and interiors. But now it's time to say bye-bye, because the corner store will be closing its doors. Instead, there's a Super Final Sale until Saturday with great bargains and unique pieces such as colourful lampshades by OH Interior Design, fashion by MD Modedesign and ceramics by Marika Faber. Especially cool: Even the shop furniture can be snatched at bargain prices!

Elvis – from Memphis to Vienna
This should make the hearts of all nostalgic rock'n'roll fans skip a beat: “The King” has now moved in with bag and baggage where normally well-preserved items from the Viennese rubbish dumps can be found. From today, original items of clothing, police badges, gold records, a guitar and original autographs by Elvis Presley can be admired at the 48er-Tandler. The exhibition comprises around 1,800 exhibits, making it the largest outside of Graceland! Best of all: Admission is free and guided tours of the fascinating life and career of the music icon are included!

Rose
Rose is sitting shiv'a on a bench for a Palestinian girl who was shot by her grandson – the opener for Martin Sherman's play “Rose”. Played by Andrea Eckert, the Holocaust survivor recalls her rocky life between the demise of Jewish culture and the growing alienation between modern Israelis and Jews from the diaspora. Deeply tragic, moving and definitely the play of the hour. All the more astonishing is the art of Jewish humour with which Andrea Eckert manages to give this leaden subject a touch of bearability. Worth seeing!

Culinarical
This is how to culinary jet-set! At the cult musical dinner show “Culinarical”, a 3-course menu takes you to the musical metropolises of Vienna, New York and London. So while you enjoy pure ear candy with hits from “Wicked” or “Moulin Rouge”, the very finest is served for the palate: The journey begins in Vienna with a Tafelspitz aspic, for fillet mignon, truffle mashed potatoes, onion rings & more, it's off to New York and the sweet temptation comes London style with pistachio chocolate mousse. Winter Sale at Combinat
When Santa, Christkind and Befana the witch have all flown off, Combinat will be handing out presents – in the form of super-affordable designer clothes! These include items from the current collections of Austrian labels such as Pitour, Plural and Artista. With purist jumpers and pretty shirt dresses (ideal for layering!), you can easily defy the often surprisingly bitter Viennese winter cold. All New Cakes Are Nice
Fancy some cake? Or wandering through a labyrinth, uncovering the secret of the magic cube and dancing in the fluorescent cyber-doll cake disco? Then let's get going! Inspired by “Alice in Wonderland” author Lewis Carroll's sentence “All New Cake Are Nice”, students of the Angewandte university have put together an interactive exhibition. Dolls and machines become close friends and the stage becomes a world that playfully tries to reinterprets the relationship between humans, machines and dolls. Anyone who wants to can play along. A bit crazy, but fascinating!

Madame Baheux
4 voices, 15 strings, 2 bows plus percussion and drums. Witty, sparkling, quirky, feminine and cheeky! That describes the girl gang “Madame Baheux” pretty well. With the exception of double bass ace Lina, the foursome come from the Balkans and their folk songs from Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia and Macedonia, mixed with their own compositions about inhospitable Viennese and their foreign guests, get into your head, heart and legs. Curious? The Balkan quartet is performing today at the opening festival of the brand new cultural and event hotspot NordbahnSaal!

3D PicArt Museum
Let's admit it, we have all secretly wanted to ride a unicorn at some point. In Vienna, this dream is now becoming a reality, because in the very first TrickArt Museum, daredevils can not only get up close and personal with said unicorns, but also surf Hawaiian monster waves and grow angel wings. It works like this: Visitors have 90 minutes to pose in front of the museum's 40 exhibits and have their photo taken with their own smartphone. Thanks to 3D technology, this creates the illusion of being right in the middle of the action. Best Instagram fodder ;)

 Rubey & Schwarz
Rubey & Schwarz: The Restaurant
Manuel Rubey and Simon Schwarz have four left hands, yet the friends can imagine themselves perfectly well as restaurant owners. Simon once played a chef and Manuel likes wine. That should be enough expertise. In the light of day, their fancy venue looks more like a candidate for a tv show on botched construction and when it burns down, it smells strongly of arson. At least for the village policewoman, who’s sure: Rubey did it. Because the murderers may always be the gardeners, but the arsonists are always the Viennese! Perfect distraction from the Sunday blues ;-)

Malika Mataeva
Role models are often intangible, famous personalities. Yet ladies with plenty of role model power are among us every day – like Malika Mataeva. The Chechen fled to Austria at the age of 18 without any knowledge of German. After quickly learning the language, she studied computer science and started working as a software developer at Bosch. Today, Malika is a mother of three children and the only woman, together with five men, responsible for cyber security in the Austrian economy at the Austrian Economic Chambers. She tells us about her inspiring life today!

 Nacht des Fado
Night of Fado
Well, winter will likely be whooshing around our ears, keeping us freezing cold for a while yet. But today, at least for one evening, we can satisfy our longing for gentle sun-kisses. Because Fado legend Carlos Leitao heats up the stage with the gifted singer Silvana Peres, bringing Portuguese flair to our favourite city. The top fadista demonstrates what fusion music sounds like and mixes classic Portuguese fado with various world music styles such as pop. If you're curious, you can listen in here, for that’s what uma noite magica sounds like!

Who has the most beautiful voice? Us ladies, of course! That's why Theater Akzent clears the stage for those with a particularly impressive tone of voice. Staging Hofmannsthal
This could be entertaining! To mark the 150th birthday of Hugo von Hofmannsthal, the Theatermuseum will be presenting an exhibition in honour of the writer and co-founder of the Salzburger Festspiele. The focus is on Hofmannsthal's exploration of the design of spaces, which can be admired in the works Elektra, Der Rosenkavalier and the Rosenkavalier film, as well as in his Viennese flat. Visitors will not be guided by a traditional guide, but in a rather theatrical way with a prologue and three acts. Something different for a change!

EsRap
Rap the social gap(s)! They are not only siblings, but also the best-known socially critical duo of migrant workers' children in the rap business. Esra and Enes Özmen from Ottakring make political hip hop and in their mixed German-Turkish lyrics deal with questions of identity, being foreign in one's own country and also being a woman in the male-dominated hip hop world. Their mixture of classic hip-hop beats and arabesque, meaning Turkish-oriental music, is exciting. To be heard today at KulturWelle in the Haus des Meeres!

Softcover
It’s quite possible that CitySpotterGirl has found her new favourite shop. Something like Softcover has sorely been missing in Vienna! Where the Nachtasyl used to be, photographer Sebastian Gansrigler has transformed the iconic dump into a super-fancy bookshop. Hand-picked indie magazines, art and photo books as well as small editions – all from independent publishers, highly creative and rather hard to get hold of – are displayed on light-coloured wooden shelves. Bookworms can browse through the exquisite books in cosy window nooks – including Sebastian's own magazine, by the way!

The Lazy
The name is only half true here. For you can certainly get “lazy” here in the cosy cocktail chairs, but you’ll be super busy with snacking, feasting and lots of “mmmhs”. Pastry chef Alice Lindenau conjures up sugar dreams that are as delicious as they are pretty in the new Lazy. Plus, the tartelettes, cakes, etc. are all plant-based, but you wouldn't know it. The vegan pistachio croissant lacks neither fluffyness nor crispyness and the earl grey tartelettes are delicious anyway. They are served on self-designed ceramic crockery, accompanied by creamy coffee with beans from El Salvador – as I said: mmmh!
