"Heya Girls!"
It must have been like a miracle! When the Lumière brothers' first moving images sent the audience in a Paris café into ecstasy in 1896, news of the “Cinématographe” spread like wildfire. The novel machine immediately began its triumphal march across all continents – on 20 March already, the first film screening took place in Vienna. Impressive apparatuses rattled the first moving images onto the screen, and representatives of the Lumière brothers amazed the premiere audience at the “Imperial and Royal Research Institute of Photography” with photographs taken directly on location. For example, the entrance to the “Cinématographe Lumière” on the corner of Kärntnerstraße and Krugerstraße was preserved: Vienna's 1st cinema was captured on the screen in one of the world's first films – moments for eternity! And exactly this programme can now be seen online for the first time 125 years later as a home cinema event. The Filmarchiv Austria is showing – free of charge! – 112 films from the wonderful first years of cinema. A treasure – and a visual delight!

Wishing you a nostalgic week,

Blackout
In recent weeks, Austria has narrowly scraped past a nationwide blackout several times. So far, it has always been possible to avert it, but what if that doesn't happen? No power, no light, no telephone – what do you do? The good news is that you can take precautions against prolonged power cuts like a blackout. In the course of the online lecture, many questions will be answered: How does such a large-scale, prolonged power blackout actually come about? What are the possible consequences for the population? What makes a household crisis-proof? The lecture is free of charge!

Sleep, the elixir of life
The reason for rumpled sheets used to be nicer: More and more people are suffering from insufficient or poor sleep during the pandemic, the reason being a variety of fears and worries. On today's World Sleeping Day, Melanie Pesendorfer tackles sleep problems in her Zoom lecture “Sleep, the elixir of life”: as a trained sleep coach, she explains the health consequences and analyses sleep types as well as annoying sleep robbers. Practical help is offered in the form of relaxation techniques before going to bed in the evening. That way, travelling to the land of dreams will work out again.

 Fridays for Future
Global climate strike
All over the world people are protesting against the destruction of our planet today. Fridays For Future calls for a global climate strike. Corona-compliant protests are planned worldwide and throughout Austria – minimum distance and FFP2 masks are mandatory everywhere! Meeting points in Vienna: the metro stations Schottentor, Volkstheater, Karlsplatz, Stadtpark and Stubentor, from there you walk together to the Ringstraße. Here, people form a chain of people at a distance of 3 metres from each other, connected by colourful banners and strings. There will also be music, art events and speeches.

Around the World in One Kitchen
The cutest series since the invention of cooking shows: In New York, Brian and son Sam have been cooking their way alphabetically around the world since the beginning of the pandemic, recorded as the YouTube series “Around the World in One Kitchen”. Every week it's the turn of a new nation's dish (there are 194), but not everything passes the mini-chef's taste test ;-) A special episode is available today exclusively on “Turnstile Tours”: The two take you behind the stove and cook their next dish live. They have already cooked Antigua, Afghanistan and Austria, and they still want to get to Zimbabwe – fingers crossed!

 Green Factory
Green Pop-up
The high-end department store Steffl has brought a couple of new pop-up shops into the house, and they have moved into the ground floor. Start-ups from Hamburg, Paris and London show their original design pieces that combine high-tech and nature. The Viennese company Neutos is there with its design lamps: miniature bottle gardens are integrated into the transparent lamp base. Also suitable for people without a green thumb are the Green Factory plants in glass spheres, which form a self-contained eco-system. To match, you can get deceptively real bird singing from so-called “Zwitscherboxen”.

108 sun salutations
Don't be put off by the large number, 108 is simply considered a sacred number in yoga. And you don't have to complete the full 108 salutations with yoga teacher Sabine from “YogaInn” at the free Zoom meeting. The main thing is to welcome spring together today. Sun salutations are a powerful practice, and after just a few rounds the body gets into the flow. During the movements, the head gets a break and you can focus only on your own breath until a meditative state is reached. Breaks may be taken at any time or you can move on to the final relaxation.

In a jar for at home or as a take-away. This weekend you can taste yourself through Lukas Nagl's star restaurant “Bootshaus”: for refined Matjes-Kipferl, Sur schnitzel from Duroc pork and juicy organic lamb kebab, first book a pick-up time online and choose on-site.

Circus Down Under: Humans 2.0
The Australian “Circa Contemporary Circus” plays in completely different spheres than a normal circus. The company from Down Under is famous for its dynamic choreography and breathtaking images. Because their latest show, “Humans 2.0”, could not go on tour, it now takes to the virtual stage as a recording: the Festspielhaus St. Pölten is showing the dizzying performance for a week free of charge as a stream. World-class artists swing hazardously through the air, push themselves to the limit and test their physical limits. A true spectacle!

Too stupid to be old
“We were born for each other. We just realised it late.” Says Otto Schenk about soulmate and goofball partner Michael Niavarani. And since they never managed to meet privately for coffee, they decided to get so close to each other on stage that they could tread on each other's toes. Sitting down, of course. They reminisce, philosophise and improvise for all they're worth, while having coffee house chit-chat and poking fun at each other. With over 130 years of humour and life experience under their belts, they are a dream team when it comes to the art of goofing around.

 Javus Quartett/ Birgit Schulz
Focusing on Beethoven
Usually, the audience is only presented with the finished concert, no one sees or hears the rehearsals behind the curtain. But not today! With “Beethoven im Brennglas”, the creation of a performance can be experienced live. The young chamber music ensemble Javus Quartett will work on Ludwig van Beethoven's opus 95 in a total of four sessions – a fascinatingly rugged and agitated oeuvre. They experiment and rehearse together with alternating musical guests, while the online audience gets a chance to look over their shoulders into the notes.

Natural cosmetics for the Easter nest
Easter bunnies did learn to wash their paws last year. This year they're hopping by with masks to hide little treats ;-) Natural cosmetics end up in the nest at the live workshop of “Katharina rührt”: daisies, dandelion and wild garlic are used to make lip care with flower oil, a gentle face scrub and the healing drink “Oxymel” (a kind of natural sour honey). You can pick the greens for the recipes yourself during a meadow raid or pre-order a ready-made herb box. To ensure that all the nests are well-filled, the video will remain available for 14 days.

Daniel Spoerri
Today the doors of the Bank Austria Kunstforum will open to welcome you to the new exhibition: a comprehensive retrospective is dedicated to Daniel Spoerri, a cosmopolitan living in Vienna. Whether a walk through the flea market or a meal with friends – Spoerri captures moments in time in assemblages and “snare pictures”. The co-founder of Nouveau Réalisme and Eat Art has been focusing on social interactions and the sensuous perception of everyday things in his multifaceted work for 60 years. And has thus inscribed himself into the European history of art!

Poppy's
In the beginning there was the love for her Portuguese husband, then soon for the whole country: Katharina Mautner-Markhof shares a bit of her love for Portugal in her concept store Poppy's, a pastel shop with lots of space for sustainable design. She has also brought along some delicacies, but above all ceramics and beautiful It-pieces: handmade “Barru Pottery” is printed with traditional crocheted doilies, and shopping bags in fruity ice cream colours are made from old carpets. There are homely items from Scandinavia, and the “Stickylemon” backpacks in playful patterns are Dutch.

Tolstoy
Ok, learned something new again: the famous Russian writer Leo Tolstoy was a vegan. And in this capacity, he is the eponym of a new restaurant between TU and Naschmarkt, focusing exclusively on vegan food. In the future, the restaurant is to become a worldwide franchise chain, which is why it is aimed at a young audience. You don't order from the waiter but a touch screen, and you pick up your meal at the counter. The menu consists mainly of pinsas (flat breads) and creative salads. Since the pinsa dough has to rise for at least 24 hours, it is particularly digestible – and tastes good!
