"Heya Girls!"
Fifteen years ago, as I moved from Berlin to Vienna, it still used to exist: the famous cinema Eos Kino. Named after the goddess of red skies, opened in 1921, imposing with its ample balcony, large screen and cult foyer. In 2004, this temple of a slowly sinking dream landscape of cinemas had to close down. This week however, its doors are opening again. For two days at least. Because all through spring, the Filmarchiv Austria is playing in old, forgotten movie-palaces that were thought long disappeared– and it is simply astounding how many of those still exist in Vienna! It is generally speaking a good week for cinema fans. On Friday there is also the Long Night of the Repertory Cinema: with previews, films and cult cat videos. We are all invited for free! And the Filmcasino, right around the corner of the editorial department, celebrates its 25th anniversary – with free cinema until long after midnight (among them “Wallace & Gromit – A Close Shave”) and free food. A fine week!

Tour of the fine arts
Peek over the shoulders of tomorrow’s star artists! For 4 days, all buildings of the academy of fine arts are open to visitors: a guided tour lets people see creative activities in the halls. The creative trail leads to workplaces, ateliers and collections, to pictures, architecture and visual arts. In every corner, special exhibitions and performances await. On Friday evening, a great auction for the benefit of students from third countries and those with a migrant background will take place – with works of renowned artists.

Opening of Eistraum
I think the “Dream path” is the coolest. There’s something magical about dashing along a narrow path of ice between the giant trees of the Rathaus Park late at night! So all ladies who enjoy neat ice-skating beware: the Eistraum starts again today. It opens at 19:00, and to celebrate the day, the entrance is free. The ice landscape this year is 7 000 sqm. large, the Dream path is almost 1 km long – and every night, the DJs of Radio Wien can be seen live. Spontaneous ladies can borrow one of the 1200 pairs of pre-warmed ice-skates.

Unfortunately, we almost only associate the country at the feet of the Hindukusch with war and the Taliban. However, the country looks back on a thousand-year-old unique (food) culture. Today, two migrant women will give instructions on how to cook authentic everyday meals. Then, you can eat, drink and they’ll tell stories about the country and its people. Noshe jan!

There, Anna Kucharska-Wolf regularly offers workshops, this week it will be about sewing bags. In small groups, you can potter about and chat, every participant makes her own dream bag. With leather, funny applications or motley cloth. Speaking of cloth: you can either bring your own or buy it there, and enrolment is mandatory. This applies to the tunic workshop too, which also takes place in January.

Brüder Schwadron
From 1899 to 1938, the Jewish company Brüder Schwadron fitted many houses, public buildings, the Amalienbad swimming pool, but also the largest barrel in the imperial wine cellar with magnificent tiles. Wall claddings and floorings are examples of craft mastery and aesthetic sensitivity. In 1938, the business was aryanised and the family had to flee. Now for the first time, an exhibition tries to save the slowly disappearing traces of the company from oblivion. The entrance is free, there is a free tour today!

Moddi
He is the star of the Norwegian singer-songwriter scene, and he is coming to Vienna for an intimate sitting concert: Moddi is in town! The likeable fuzzy head, whose actual name is Pål Moddi Knutsen, has already been compared to a young Björk. And scores lots of prices: for his mix of hoarse voice, passionate stories, folky arrangements and a great deal of pathos. Robert Rutöd: Right Time Right Place
The blind, looking for his way at a tramway station of all places, a helpless swan, frozen solid on the vast ice. The glasses that Robert Rutöd wear while taking pictures is tragicomic and sometimes even macabre. And this he does successfully: the Viennese was the winner of the 2012 New York Photo Award! His search for clues is called “Right Time Right Place” and took him five years of roaming across Europe. Right times, wrong places or both at the same time were immortalized. Franz Sedlacek
A multi talent: he was a painter, graphic artist, caricaturist and his breadwinning job was as a chemist, his imageries oscillate between romantic and surrealism, the old masters and the new practicality. Franz Sedlacek, one of the most significant Austrian artists of the interwar period, was only discovered again in the 1990s. Despite all the years, everything has been preserved: the pull of his works, which are bizarre and solitary, abysmal and disconcerting. Many of those are shown in the exhibition “Chemist of imagination" opening today and running until 21 April.

And we are still waiting for the real winter. With temperatures below zero, snow drifts and icy wind. Here is again someone who has moved to Vienna for love. This time, it is a particularly likeable Belgian girl. And because Florence De Boes misses the chocolate of her homeland so very much, there is now one more fine boutique in town. At Belga’s, you can find chocolaty insiders’ tips: pralines and sweets from small factories that are still unknown around here, such as Corne Port-Royal. But most of all, Florence bakes “gauffres” in an awesome waffle iron. These authentic Belgian waffles are, as we all know, the best in the world!

Liebhart
When the starter is a caraway roast carpaccio with mustard-pear chutney, followed by a red beets risotto with grilled black pudding, so much is clear: we’ve landed in the “creative regional cuisine” corner. At Liebhart’s, there is Viennese cuisine, just a bit younger and fresher. The restaurant is located in what used to be a modern Ottakring institution for years, before being renovated and changing hands. Instead of the cool concrete-only ambiance, the walls have been covered in oak and splendid Dixon lamps hang over wooden tables. It looks damn good!
