"Heya Girls!"
He may not necessarily look like a hero, but he is one to me: Royston Maldoom. The English dancer and choreographer works with non-dancers all over the world: he danced the Carmina Burana with a hundred street kids in Addis Abeba and rehearsed the ballet Le sacre du printemps with 250 young Berliners (from 25 nations) and the Philharmonic orchestra under the direction of Simon Rattle. If you have ever seen the stunning documentary Rhythm Is It! about the Berlin project, you’ll know what I’m talking about (cry alert!). Why am I telling you this? Because Royston Maldoom brought community dance to Vienna in 2007. And started an incredibly success story together with Caritas. 14,500 participants in the previous years, last year alone, they reached 3,400 active participants and 7,100 spectators, they staged 44 performances. “Tanz die Toleranz” is considered one of the most important European programmes in the area of community dance. And now my hero is in Vienna this weekend! Maldoom gives a lecture and a workshop – and at Ankerbrotfabrik, they are dancing tolerance again with No Lost Love.

Wishing you an impressive week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Stoffsalon Sale
“We need space” is the mission – which is why Alexandra Rath’s Stoffsalon has a cheerful three-day-sale of pretty clothing & interior fabrics! From -10% to, believe it or not, -70% on all fabrics in stock: selected jerseys, printed cotton fabrics, voile and season fabrics. You can also acquire particular things like soft shell, plush, or cord for little money. Such an amount of materials had better come with the appropriate manuals – and here you go, even selected sewing patterns are included in the sale. By the way: they also have bigger remnants as a whole!

It’s hard to ignore – summer is here! And that’s why there is a really fat party to celebrate the start of the hot season at MuseumsQuartier. With free admission from 17:00 to all (!) museums and cultural institutions with special guided tours and many other highlights! But it will also rock outdoors: from 19:00, you’ll hear Swankster’s hip-hop sound through the main yard, and later they got Grammy award-winner J. Hoard and Austro-rapper Misses U as reinforcements. Also included: a boat race in the water basin and free mini-golf from 15:00.

Daniel Blumberg
They say there are songwriters who have to feel bad in order to write good songs. Daniel Blumberg appears to be one of them. The young musician, who is also a shooting star as a painter and is currently exhibiting in the Hamburg Deichtorhallen, has created a beautiful, melancholic, broken piece of poetry with his last LP. The Times called “Minus” a classic, the Rolling Stone “terrific”. The whole record was made within five days in the Café Oto in London. At the rhiz, you can lose yourself in the emotions of Blumberg today, always on the edge of depression and the blues.

Weiße Tafel at Augarten
Whoa, it’s not often that you can dine like that in Vienna! To kick off the culinary Wienissimo Festspiele tonight, they’re setting a 65m long white table in front of Augarten Palace, beautifully decorated with flowers and Augarten figurines. First, there’s an event for VIPs, but right afterwards, you can treat yourself to a fine 3-course-menu. The minimum donation for that is 39€ and will go to the Austrian Children’s Villages. And since the weather forecast predicts a midsummer’s night for Friday, it’s certainly going to be mega atmospheric.

Prince Eugayn
The rumour mill has been wondering for 300 years: was Prince Eugen gay? On the occasion of EuroPride, the Upper Belvedere picks up the rumours and gossip about the “eternal bachelor” and hosts a theme tour all about homosexuality in the arts. Unknown titbits about Viennese history will be revealed when the perspective is changed, allowing a new, different look at the collection of the Prince of Savoy. Maybe you can even take a guess at special preferences and passions? If queer or not – it’s an exciting excursion into history.

Nordic Summer Ball
Yes, yes, the far North has become real fashionable and is also a very popular holiday destination. And today you can get into the right mood by venturing onto the dance floor of the first Nordic Summer Ball taking place at the beautiful baroque Palace Schönburg. It will contain all the elements of a classic ball with opening, dancing, and live-music in an elegant setting and evening dress, as it should be. But you will also hear Scandinavian songs, and you can show off your “Nordic knowledge” during a quiz. On top of that, they have sweets by Lux & Lauris and vodka. Hey Skol!

Love Your Belly
Fortunately, wasp waists like during Sissi’s time aren’t “in” anymore – the empress had 51 cm! However, many women still lack the self-confidence to stand by their own bellies. With their workshops, the fabulous “Bauchfrauen” intend to create acceptance and love for the belly. For two days, the German power-ladies will finally come to Vienna too! Emotional motivation-lectures, a dance unit (to shake off self-doubts) and a relaxing meditation await you during a four-hour-workshop with successful author Sandra Wurster. Great!

Day of Open Community Gardens
There are more and more of them! Urban gardening already belongs to Vienna like sausage stands – and numerous community gardens invite you to a chat with the gardeners today. And to look at the green stuff, sorry, the floral and veggie splendour. In the Gasometer quarter, you can visit the 11erGarten, the Pfeilgarten in the eight district is hosting a summer party – and in the Grätzl garden Alsergrund at the Narrenturm things get real crazy: herbal walk, reading corner, self-made bread spreads, lemonade and pies as refreshments, information on wild bees and interesting facts on permaculture!

Fesch‘Markt
It’s getting bigger and bigger! The huge creativity market now takes place for three days already: young designers, start-ups and artists join in the urban sales exhibition in the halls of Ottakringer Brewery, from Hamamaniac to Wiener Alchemisten. Shrill individual pieces, vintage and fine new things can be purchased, from fashion to product design – affordable and yet very special at the same time. Delicious food is provided by restaurateurs such as Brotkost, plus they have a Fesch workshop and a bicycle market. And willhaben is there with a “Vintage Wohnzimmer”. Real pretty!

Oblivion
You enjoy watching this woman digging through waste. The Belgian artist Sarah Vanhee has collected her waste over the course of a year, which she unpacks on stage for Oblivion. But apart from the common refuse like plastic packages or cotton buds, there are also absurdly banal things like secreted body fluids, discarded ideas or emails that were deleted. Vanhee questions the whereabouts of our waste and criticises our throwaway society. All this leads to a valuable realisation: the useless can actually be beautiful!

Wirbelwochen at Donaupark
Going through life with your head held high: the spine makes it possible. To help the body keep this up and find balance with all the work done sitting down every day, you have to mobilise, strengthen and stretch. That is exactly what happens during the Wirbelwochen ('Vertebra Weeks'), which start today. In the weekly course, you strengthen (with your own body weight and small equipment) the torso and the shoulders, balance exercises target the core muscles. The holistic body training significantly relieves the vertebrae and intervertebral discs. And all this outside in the fresh air at Donaupark!

Show by Fashion School Hetzendorf
Original and innovative! 200 creations and a 60 metres long loop-shaped catwalk with a view of the Schlosspark – these are the ingredients for the brilliant graduation show at Modeschule Hetzendorf. Not only the qualified collections of the graduating class can be admired today, but also the materialised tailor-dreams of the students of the second to fourth classes. They present sewed and knitted things but also artsy accessories, bags, and shoes. Everything is true to the theme “illusion”. And since this notoriously draws big crowds, they do two shows.

Big anniversary: 100 years of Bauhaus! As a self-identified Bauhaus-fan, CitySpotterGirl can’t miss this, her daughter slept in a Bauhaus cradle as a baby, after all. Picnic in nature
A picnic-outing is always a romantic idea, but often fails because of the preparations in the kitchen. If you want to avoid having to fill the picnic basket yourself, you can now let Palais Coburg work for you. You can pre-order and collect a completely finished basket there and take it to the countryside. The eight-course menu is exquisitely fine-tuned by the head chefs. Who can say they ever had a picnic feasting on sirloin slices with fregola salad and sweet-sour cauliflower with algae? Water and wine are included. From time to time, you may indulge in some luxury, after all!

This heat only leaves one choice: flee to the water. How convenient that family Querfeld have opened their boathouse at the Old Danube after a long period of renovation.
