"Heya Girls!"
Yes, my dears, it’s that time of the year again: the traditional summer break is around the corner! Before I turn off the computer and go relax in the hammock, I serve you the best restaurant- and shop tips of the last months instead of the weekly events, as always. And aside from that, I also have a surprise for you: CitySpotterGirl’s new book will be released next week! Fitting for the season, I have collected many wonderful tips from Lower Austria and Burgenland for “Landpartie. Entdeckungen im Land um Wien”. Tasty restaurants, cafes, and mountain cabins, funny shops and original trip tips. So if you would like to know where to find the most romantic river baths of the country, spend a cosy night, or discover hidden garden gems, then “Landpartie” is the right reading material for you. From 30 July, you can purchase the book in every bookshop and online. By the way, you can check out an excerpt: here. And now farewell, dear ladies, and enjoy the summer!

Wishing you a beautiful August,
Your CitySpotterGirl

 Aesop
Aesop
Finally the Australian cosmetic cult brand is also available in Austria! And in really classy fashion too, in the 20s art-deco ambience in the middle of the first district. The store’s centrepiece: a huge washstand where all the precious care products for skin, hair and body are presented. This is not a store where you just go in, grab a jar and leave; rather they make sure to advise each client individually, and test crèmes and soaps on them during a cup of tea and a hand consultation. They offer many face products (crèmes and toners) but also perfumes, shampoos and gift sets. Really pretty and super-nice service!

Even though Vienna is still not located by the sea – we do have a harbour pub now! The brand-new restaurant at Danube Canal is still waiting for sailors but in the meantime, they’ve already tattooed the wall with sailor’s brides ;-) Just like Klee am Hanselteich, which is operated by the same captains, it’s all hip and fancy – from mossy-green leather chairs, to the designer wooden bar and the glass bubble-lamp. The menu is a somewhat wayward-creative mix from fish grilled on a stick to beef olives and “fake” veggie-Bolognese. There are cheaper lunch menus, at night you can anchor at the bar till all hours. Cool!

Elissar
The Lebanese cuisine is said to be the best one in the Middle East – if you want to verify that, you now have the chance to do so in Vienna in the chic restaurant Elissar with its subtle Oriental touch (I love those tiles!). You are probably familiar with tabouleh, hummus and falafel but baba ghanough, maanek and libanese “pizza” is where the culinary adventures start. Best to go there as a group, order several small dishes and taste everything in this tasty cosmos. By the way, the venue is named after the smart heroine and queen Elissar, who founded Carthage. One more reason to go there ;-)

Edelschimmel cheese bar & grocery store
Servitengasse with the best Krapfen in the city and the Xocolat manufactory provide an ideal environment for “sweet teeth”, but now, a new cheese paradise provides culinary-spicy compensation. Claudia and Wolfgang Zankl-Sertl from the restaurant “pramerl & the wolf” and Klaus Gassner share a mutual passion for unusual types of cheese. About 80 carefully selected cheeses from the native, delicate “Zenzi” to international classics can be tasted and purchased in the spacious cheese bar. In addition, they offer Öfferl bread, hand-crafted butter, the finest mustard, chutneys and – duh – the best wines!

Randale
Well, I’m a bit beyond the pizza-age. Or so I thought. Until last week, when I found myself at Randale, quite close to the office and realised: there’s a different way to make it! For example with turnips, horseradish and smoked rainbow trout (unbelievably tasty!) or with Black Angus roastbeef and citrus oil. And a pizza with bloodsausage, apple and marjoram is called “Wiener Blut” (Viennese blood) there. The ultra-creative dough wheels are baked in the former Transporter-Club – and it’s still very hip and loud, especially when DJs are spinning records at night. From now on, I’m a pizza fan again!

Ausnahmsweise
Do you need to have a Master’s degree in Environmental Management to be such a good baker? Well, it worked for Raphaela ;-) The likable young confectioner for vegan and gluten-free patisserie has been baking for various restaurants for years, now, at the beginning of the month, she has opened her own café together with her boyfriend. It’s bright and friendly – and on the stylish counter, you can find chocolate-peanut butter cake next to zucchini blueberry pie, brownies and tiramisu cake. They serve warm meals for lunch, the lentil curry with sweet potatoes was excellent. Really damn cosy here!

Buchcafe Melange
A twofold pleasure is offered here for bibliophile coffeefans. On the one hand, delicious pies with coffee that you can enjoy on the nicely old fashioned furniture right next to some book shelves. And on the other hand of course there’s the literary offer. Though the book shop is rather small, it provides an ingenious selection of potential favourites – from Nigel Slater’s newest cookbook to selected novels. Apart from German books, there’s also a variety of BCS (Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian) books, as well as Turkish ones. Anyone who won’t discover their love for books here is a hopeless case!

Turnhalle
The newly opened café at Brick-5 is indeed named after its former use as a sports hall (a Jewish school used to be situated there until 1938). But from now on the cosy-stylish workshop-loft ambiance will be a place for gourmandizing, not training. It offers seasonal delicacies from the Veggie- &Vegan kitchen – ranging from blue mold-zucchini-wheat to sinful cakes from gosweetbakery. All ingredients come from their own garden in Lower Austria! On Sundays, there’s Brunch, on the other days a daily changing buffet. Real swell – and another great new location in the ‘hood of the 15th district.

Körbchen
Master class graduates Elisabeth Leitner and Victoria Lohninger were supposed to tailor men’s jackets. But the love for lingerie came and conquered them. Good for Vienna’s women, who can now acquire handcrafted sexy bralettes, panties and babydolls in their small atelier-shop “Körbchen” in Webgasse (don’t be confused: it’s also the home of Sabrina Vogel’s fashion). About 15 models are waiting to shine, all of them without wire and wadding, but made from fancy French and Italian lace. Refined cuts and shoulder strap-solutions. And super comfy!

This man just can’t be stopped! Gourmet king Marco Simonis has opened his fourth branch recently – this time in the 4th district. And there too, foodies and aesthetes are blessed with delicacies and pretty things, from premium chocolate to fancy wine and stylishenamel tableware or scented lavender ironing water. Sitting at the window, you can also enjoy Hausbrandt-coffee, sweet sins, warm daily specials or marinated Thum ham, and perhaps you will be seduced into stocking up on some tempting delicacies like Bernard Antony-cheese. Grains
We all know it: breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Marina Hörlein shows us in her tiny restaurant how incredibly creative and at the same time healthy it can be. Whether it’s roasted milled gruel with compote and nut-cacao brittle (sweet treat in the morning), spicy congee from brown rice with miso and vegetables (my current favourite) or adzuki bean-sweet potato mash – it tastes amazing! The meals are prepared with lots of knowledge and love. By the way, it already opens at 7:30 so you can take away a warm super-breakfast to work! They also offer lunch meals.

Now this is something unusual! Day Spa, natural cosmetics oasis, therapy centre, shop – and restaurant, all in one. MiaVia only opened a few days ago and it is all about having a good time and refuelling your batteries. The place specialises in clean-, raw-, and low-carbeating. It’s light, ultra-chic and cosy in a Scandinavian way! They only serve super-healthy dishes that taste pretty damn good. For example, the curry and green quinoa bowls, root vegetable medallions or the sous-vide cooked fish & meat dishes. From breakfast to dinner, and they also offer takeaway.

Rome wasn’t built in a day! Three years ago, Elisabeth Kohl who is not so young herself anymore, was at a crossroads professionally. She took two years, remembered her roots and her love for craftwork that was inspired in her early on by her carpenter-father. For an entire year, she canvassed craftsman’s markets and manufactories in Austria and its neighbouring countries to fill her own shop with her finds. Now you can find beautiful products all about living, life, and gift-giving there: handmade paper from Germany, delicate porcelain from Umbria and fancy Comploj glass. Great!

Jussi
Once more something really original! Family Kalch in Stadlau has been running a garden centre for generations – by now, the former vegetable hall has been transformed into a restaurant, though. The unusual location is somewhat reminiscent of the Bronx: the vast pub garden is right below the U2 line which runs on stilts there. Nevertheless, it’s quite idyllic to sit outside between the raised beds and sea of blossoms, the cook scurries past, picking fresh herbs, and the elegant teak furniture matches the industrial concrete pillars. And they cook really well with many of their own products!

Forget holding on to your wallet: the colourful cotton bags by “Schön und Gut” are stylish, really big and are only 17 euros. And they are made in a social workshop by people in search of work. The new, huge store that also includes a little café is run by AMS daughter Job-Transfair, selling exclusively fairly produced things with real added social value – apart from textiles they also sell tableware, seasoning salts, wooden furniture or upcycling lamps. Many things are from their own workshops, some come from other social projects or smart start-ups. Great project and great shop!

12 Karma Food
Brandnew! It started with a small deli in Klosterneuburg, this week, Simone and Adi are already opening their fourth project for healthy, fast and most importantly sustainable organic food. The latest venue is a breakfast & lunch hotspot right opposite to WU, which also comes with a lovely garden. They serve curries, soups and tasty karma bowls – and the menu promptly tells you what effect the food has. The Masala-beef whole grain lasagne provides calcium and iron, the peas-mint vegetable curry lowers your cholesterol level. In conclusion: good vibes & karma!

Handgedruckt
Block Printing is one of the last craftmanships where really everything is done by hand. Art historian Elli Seeger is a master of this technique and has opened an atelier in the centre of Mauer. Using old models (she owns a huge collection) or via silk screen printing, she prints and handles high-quality fabrics: scarfs, pillows, bags, Hamam towels, baby bodies and home accessories are sporting the most wonderful patterns. Right next to the small shop is her workshop-room, where you can try out printing yourself or participate at workshops. Very neat!

What’s feel-good atmosphere in French? Never mind, but the likable duo Guilhem and Pessah has managed to create just that in their second venue. Bright, spacious, comfortable for sitting or lounging, plus attentive service. There is a fine “plat du jour” on the menu every day, just like at the (much smaller) Midi-Deli at Hoher Markt, plus authentic French cuisine like tartines, quiches, grandes salades and – mon dieu! – tarte choco with liquid core ;-) The wine comes from the family’s winery, the walls have been artfully designed by Guilhem’s brother. CitySpotterGirl has a soft spot for love stories. The newest one: young Viennese guy & young Viennese lady, who are both in France to learn the art and craft of baking and confectionary, meet in Paris, fall in love and return to Vienna to open a real French boulangerie. They did an amazing job reconstructing a former horse barn from the Renaissance – and now we have a piece of Paris in the 1st district! Joseph Bagelmanufaktur
There’s “bagel-y” news! Iconic baker Josef Weghaupt has gone to the bagels. And everyone knows: bagels are tricky. They must be cooked and baked, they must be soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. After months of fiddling around and exchanging know-how with New York’s bagel king, he succeeded. Joseph’s bagels are really something else. You can now buy them at the new manufactory at Albertinaplatz! Filled with warm Thum bacon, warm Höllerschmid roast beef or self-made smoked salmon, they are the perfect snack. And yes, you can also get all the other bread-like delights there.
