"Heya Girls!"
Now this I like: we’re allowed to be shamelessly snoopy again! Allowed to stick our noses into the homes of strangers and knock on strangers’ doors unannounced. Because on the weekend, 80 (often private) buildings that aren’t usually accessible open their gates – and grant us a peek behind their walls. The whole thing is called “Open House Vienna”, it’s an architecture project originating in London that takes place in 30 cities from New York to Tel Aviv every year. Open House shows buildings with a special history, exciting architecture, or interesting concept. This year, for instance, you can visit the Ringturm which was inspired by New York’s skyscrapers, the Dominican monastery, the Wiener Vinegar Brewery, the Vinzidorf which is currently under construction, the beautiful Italian Cultural Institute at Sternberg Palace (photo), the high-rise Herrengasse, and the Haus Wittgenstein, which the famous philosopher designed for his sister. Sightseeing in your own city!

Wishing you a curious week,

wmns shoe outlet
Dear runners, today you should sprint to the 7th district because at the wmns running store the motto is “Bye-bye shoeting stars”! The store needs space for new items, which is why many Nike and Asics models from previous seasons have to make way and can be bought at reduced rates of up to 60%. So basically the perfect chance to gear up and motivate yourself for the autumnal running training. Because new shoes will make you run twice as light-footedly! And since the chic sneakers are absolutely suitable for business and the city, a visit pays off for non-athletes as well ;-)

World Press Photo
Not for the faint of heart, but well worth seeing! The awarded press pictures show with brutal honesty what happened around the world last year. Close to 75,000 photos were submitted to the World Press Photo Contest, 42 photographers from 22 countries were awarded in eight categories. Now the gallery WestLicht exhibits the best pictures, including the World Press Photo of the Year: “Venezuela Crisis” taken by Ronaldo Schemidt shows a burning young man, who caught fire after an explosion during protests in Caracas. The opening is today with Tarek Leitner.

Romy Schneider 8 Films for her 80th
Romy Schneider – charismatic and unique. The Vienna-born exceptional artist would have turned 80 on 23 September, but already left the stage of life in 1982 in Paris at the age of 43. By then, she had starred in more than 60 films, making cinema history. In her adopted country France, she became a grande dame, whereas in these parts, the fateful years as young empress never ended. Thank god they won’t show “Sisi” at the retrospective in Metro Kino, but instead 8 terrific Romy films for her birthday. For today’s opening, they show “Cesar et Rosalie”!

Hockermania Pop Up Store
Furniture shopping on the picturesque Mölkersteig: architect Judith Eiblmayr converted her former atelier into a culture- and sales area there a couple of months ago. Today and tomorrow, a bunch of stools of different styles are looking for new owners there, from the hundred-year-old “Sisi” to the modern “gleichdick” wooden stool fresh from Sebastian Schubert’s carpentry. Most of the goods are from the personal collection of the lady of the house and from Lichtblick-owner Christian Puffer – the stools are being joined by vintage furniture, lamps, and tableware.

Lotus Charity
A terrible topic which basically makes every woman want to scream loudly: female genital mutilation. Now a group exhibition at ega tackles this topic in artistic form, the project “Lotus” was created by the cooperation of street artist Philipp Netolitzy and British artist Sarah Gillings, who has long been campaigning against female genital mutilation. They show works of more than 50 artists, there will be live painting and shadow dancing at today’s opening. 50% of the sales proceeds go to institutions dedicated to information on and the prevention of this gruesome ritual.

Ois fian Hugo
Artist-couple Cissy Kraner and Hugo Wiener really were quite an ingenious pair. The chanteuse was famous for peculiar and wicked songs which were tailor-made for her by husband Hugo Wiener. Today, the Wienerlied-legend would have turned one hundred, her husband passed away 25 years ago. Reason enough for singer Antonia Lersch to dedicate and entire evening to Hugo, who was actually a quiet and modest person. In her humorous one-woman-show, Lersch shares some of Hugo Wiener’s song-titbits, from “Räumungsverkauf“ to “Mädchen aus dem Volke“.

Art On The Fence
It gets colourful and creative today at Börseviertel because Börsepark is turned into an open-air museum for a day. Around 80 artists present their works along a site fence that has been put up around the park specifically for this purpose, featuring everything from aquarelles to abstract paintings and photography plus sculptures. So you can take a nice stroll through the park, meet artists, check out art, buy art and win art. The open-air exhibition is accompanied by music, tango performances as well as food and drink – among them neighbours Habibi & Hawara. Cool stuff!

Sokool Burning Men Fashion
Since the 1980s in September, the Burning Men Festival has been turning the Black Rock Desert in Nevada into a wild, shrill party location. The highlight is the burning of a statue in human form – allegedly a broken heart was the reason for the first “Burning Men” ;-) The Russian designer Marina Sokolskaya and the Viennese Peter Wegrostek, big fans of the spectacle, even got married at the festival in the USA and have now founded a label for “Burner”-fashion. The brightly coloured hats, crowns, and other finery are being presented today at Aux Gazelles. Afterwards party, duh!

Vienna Research Festival
Why is the internet so fast, what is it that makes a robot touch-sensitive, and how does it feel to be a migratory bird and lead an entire swarm? At the Vienna Research Festival in Creau, more than 40 stations (in the former horse stables, a tent, and outside) allow for simulations, experiments, demonstrations and programming. Everyone can join in and try out something fascinating! Like going on a journey through time and travel to the era of the Vikings or the Romans by means of Virtual Reality glasses or sitting in a tram that hasn’t been built yet. Renato Borghetti
If you think Brazil only consists of samba and bossanova, you have never seen this guy! Renato “Borghettino” Borghetti is the first Brazilian musician who managed to earn a gold record with instrumental music. If he storms onto the stage with his floppy hat, long mane, and wide riding trousers and hits the keys of his accordion, you know things are about to get passionate with a mix of milonga, vanerao, and fandango. Congenially the gaucho from southern Brazil makes traditional rhythms meet jazz, tango, and chamber music. You can listen in here!

Bread, bagels, & co – the baking ladies Astrid Draxler and Tina Ganser know how crispy pastries become a guaranteed success. In their beginner’s course today, they show different basic doughs that you can basically bake pretty much anything with – from the classic Kaisersemmel to sourdough bread and American bagels or lye pastries. After the course, you can get going at home and try out which additional ingredients from nuts to carrots make your favourite bread taste the best. Plus, they are also making spreads for the tasting of the different breads.

Die Küsten Österreichs
A damaged life jacket or a banana carton full of children’s clothes – those, too, are artefacts of Austrian ethnology. In 2015, refugee history was made on Europe’s external borders, with about 90,000 refugees stranding here in Austria. Volkskundemuseum is now dedicating an exhibition to the “Austrian coasts” that was put together with the help of five refugees. Items like abandoned suitcases or the notebook of an Iranian refugee, plus things from the emergency shelter of Caritas Wien. Objects that speak for themselves in a touching way. Today’s vernissage!

Jettitant Storytelling Night
To meet in a café to exchange stories is nothing new. However, in this particular format it is: the Jettitant Live Storytelling is an event that invites people to tell stories from their lives in front of a (coffee house) audience. The location: the new, cosy-small Cafe Nachbarin in Gersthof; the topic: holiday stories. Holiday at the „Hausmeister” beach, baking heat at the Alte Donau, summer retreat at Semmering, holiday flirts in the Ural Mountains and anything else that might have happened ;-) Quirky, funny and surprising! Alma
With Alma, five young people are realising their idea of what traditional folk music sounds like in a cool-modern garb in a virtuoso manner. They sing and play Alpine & trans-Alpine, lyrical and lively, intelligent and entertaining. Their third album with its Dadaistic title “Oeo” is dedicated to the Esperanto of Alpine music: yodelling ;-) The harmonious speech melody can transport messages that standard language could never compete with and can express feelings that stand the test of time or simply make you happy like the Alma sound itself does. Simpl Revue: Alles war gut!
„Black-brown is the hazelnut, and black-brown I am too”, is what the police horses sing from the songbooks of their stable boys. And the Ministry of Interior orders new security cameras because everyone fancies the newest electronics: liberté, egalité, full-HD! Even though politics is enough to make you weep, you can now cry tears of laughter over it at Simpl, after all it’s the brilliantly-hilarious Michael Niavarani who wrote the new programme. One more for the road, this time not political: “mobbing” used to be a buzz word for than mopping at the most ;-)

Manufactum
Well, that was a long wait! At every Munich-visit so far, CitySpotterGirl has stormed the huge Manufactum store, but as of now, we have the emporium of good things here in Vienna as well! On 2 floors, at the elegant address Am Hof, there are 6,000 items piled up which are not necessarily trendy but always beautiful, have been tried and tested for ages and sometimes are a little bit nostalgic. From sustainably produced jeans to emerald writing ink, from English copper-pots to lemon soap. So that everyday life becomes something extraordinary! Oh, and they also have their own bakery with adjacent café!

Okay, here we go now: mandatory programme for the last mild summer nights – taking U1 to the beach! CopaBeach at Reichsbrücke has been tarted up nicely with sand & green areas, deck chairs and nice gastro-stalls from Trzesniewski-sandwiches to organic Viennese wine. “Le Burger” is also there, frying tasty burgers and hot dogs and wonderfully crispy sweet potato chips in summer. It’s self-service, but super friendly and fast, and their pallet furniture on the beach promenade makes for a good chilling spot. Afterwards: night-swimming in Neue Donau, the sunset here is simply sensational!
