"Heya Girls!"
That’s a brattling and clattering in the bakeries! On the one hand, we have baking boxes in supermarkets and bakeries closing, on the other hand, there’s a hype around baking bread and hip boutique-bakeries being stormed by foodies en masse. Like the Bread Festival “Kruste&Krume” (Crust and Crumbs) this Saturday which will attract thousands of people again. Founded by former ORF anchorwoman and passionate slow-foodista Barbara van Melle, it doesn’t just bring new popularity to an ancient craft, but it also connects the participating professional bakers. 30 top bakers from all of Austria, Piedmont, and Slovakia offer their delicious, crispy creations for sale at the market, DIY bakers can exchange doughs at the sourdough “bourse”, find ingredients from malt to honey, or snatch some special flours from the exhibiting small mills. Attention: the number of tickets is limited this year (yes, the hype!). Read more about the bread revolution in CitySpotterGirl’s interview with Barbara van Melle, who just opened Vienna’s first bread baking atelier! And I’m getting really hungry now…

Wishing you a crunchy week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Tricky Women Festival
Crazy „Trippy Adventures”, stirring „body shaming”-short films, independent films from South Korea or old classics like „Animal Farm”: the international animation film festival Tricky Women is back with some colourful noise on the screen. And the creative film makers are exclusively female! This year, the festival focuses on the documentary and the political; today, for instance, you can experience the Russian Revolution first-hand in “1917 – Der wahre Oktober” from the involved artists’ point of view. Smashing! Plus: workshops, lectures, and exhibitions.

Women’s cinema, walk, and fun!
Women rule in Vienna today! Everyone’s worshipping the female sex. From 16:00, the cinemas De France and Votivkino will show cool women’s films only, like “The Post” with Meryl Streep, “Thelma & Louise”, or “Küchengespräche mit Rebellinen”. In Wieden, artists grant intimate insights into their apartments and female power-works during the Hors Lits-walk. (Sign up!) Other options include sewing yourself a makeup pad at the Zero Waste workshop at Nahtlos or a guided tour through Martha Jungwirth’s pictorial world at Albertina.

Martial Art taster week
Ladies, onto the mat, get set, go! On occasion of the International Women’s Day, the martial art masters of Silat-Akademie invite all women to free taster trainings for a week! It starts off today from 18:00 with Silat and Wing Tzun. Silat is an artful combat technique from Malaysia and Indonesia that’s even used by the temple dancers in Bali. Sounds exciting! Not even CitySpotterGirl has ever gotten horizontal with anyone during a dance ;-) Wing Tzun, however, is classical self-defence with the effect of pepper spray. Why not! Find more interesting courses here.

 Carla Natascha
Carla Natascha: „Tierra Linda“
The sun rises, the heart becomes all wide and big and the head pleasantly light. All this happens when the likeable Austro-Bolivian Carla Natascha starts singing. Starting now, she will put everyone in a good mood with the energetic power-songs from her new album “Tierra Linda” (Beautiful Home). Get a first taste here! If you had a tough week and are in need of a dash of salsa-magic, rumba-energy, and a firework of feelings, then all you have to do is travel to the CD-release-concert at Sargfabrik tonight. And everything will turn out okay (again)!

Katti Zoób Pop Up Store
In her home country, Budapest-native fashion designer Katti Zoób has been a fixed star on the haute couture sky for over 20 years! But the colourful, stylish Zoób looks also generate buzz among fashionistas in London, Paris, and – heads up – in Vienna for the first time. Until 22 May, you can snatch a huge selection of her late winter and early spring pieces at the new pop up store at Opernring. From street outfits to office and glamour ware, everything is up for grabs. Extra cool: her voluminous dresses in delicate shades of mint and nude. A little detour definitely pays off!

10 exhibitions „Das Junge Wien“
During the next weeks, literature fans can plunge into the atmosphere of the “young Viennese”-literary scene. But this doesn’t mean newcomers in the matter of writing, but the group of authors that wrote and described literary modernism in the early 20th century. Meaning Arthur Schnitzler and co. For instance, you can follow Felix Satter on his strolls through Prater at district museum Leopoldstadt, or, starting today, explore the phenomenon of the Kaffeehaus literature at the Arkadenhof of Café Central (the living room of the young Viennese). 10 exhibitions altogether!

the Sky above, the Mud below
Right now, the imagetanz Festival is sweeping across the city – this means joining in, partying and experiencing amazing local and international performances until 24 March. A real eye-catcher: the many great female solo dancers! Like today, Austrian-Sri Lankan hip-hop dancer Farah Deen with her act „the Sky above, the Mud below” shows what womanhood feels like for her in a world of male cultural paradigms. The side events are amazing too, though: today free raving up with Hungry Shark’s dancers at Brunnenpassage. Final party on 24 March!

A traditional (and popular!) event in the yearly Viennese shopping calendar is opening its doors again fort wo days. The design market “Edelstoff” is in town and makes Marx-Halle burst at the seams with 150 exciting, hip, and creative labels and collector’s items. There’s laughing, chilling, eating and – obviously – shopping till your wallet crashes. Represented this year: the new underwear label körbchen with the finest lace lingerie made in Vienna or cute glitter-jewellery-fleas from nomi. But art, cosmetics, and furniture are on offer as well!

Follow the owls
Spring for nature is just about one thing: courtship and mating season! The current bird chirruping in the office’s garden confirms this ;-) During tonight’s hike through Donau-Auen, the owls’ love songs can be listened to, with the help of an ornithologist who explains the impressive background noise. There you can, for example, encounter a long-eared owl male that attracts females to the hatchery with his soft, monotonous hu-hu wails or brown owls with their spooky howling or other night owl colleagues trying some timidly tentative kewitt-cries. Quite an adventure!

Day of Vienna district museums
CitySpotterGirl for one has a soft spot for the somewhat dusty exhibition arrangements and honorary directors of the Viennese district museums ;-) At times, you can actually find real treasures and tropes of knowledge buried there, like Heimito von Doderer’s mindmap for his Strudelhofstiege-novel! Today, many district museums put a focus on ecclesiastical architecture, though. In the 4th district’s museum, pastor Praschinger leads the exhibition „Ecclesiastical buildings in Wieden” and the 3rd focuses on Jewish places of worship.

Don’t panic, the hereby proclaimed „snail alert” by CitySpotterGirl is a good thing! Until 30 March, Viennese snail breeder pros from Gugumuck supply more than 40 top restaurants in town with their delicate French escargots. And the timing is perfect given the fact that snail meat was already acceptable as Lenten fare among monks in medieval times. The restaurant Motto am Fluss serves them in delicious wild mushroom-Swiss pine-herbal brew, The Bank at Park Hyatt prepares them as fricassee with Emmer porridge. Incredibly artful gourmet creations. All participating restaurants here.

Isabel Meili “Schlapfen halten”
Now Isabel Meili, recently nominated for the Swiss Comedy Newcomer Award, isn’t really the kind of woman who would shut up voluntarily, either. In fact, it was an oedema of the vocal cords that silenced the bubbly Viennese-by choice for a few weeks and thus inspired her to do her first solo-cabaret-program. It’s about heated whispering duels with the Vienna regional medical insurance company, about consistent female inconsistency, and many other things (mothers! men!) that leaves ladies speechless. Swiss charm meets Viennese humour. Today is the premiere!

It’s not me, it’s a photograph
Today marks the opening of a real killer-exhibition at the Kunst Haus Wien! Finnish photo-artist Elina Brotherus is a guest there with her autobiographically heated, mega-cool self-portraits, that you can easily dream yourself into. In one picture, she’s sitting on a stone naked, in another she’s staring imaginative holes into the wall, then she’s dancing around wildly in a tutu – so just like in real life :-) Today’s the vernissage and Brotherus present! You just have to totter there, take a spontaneous selfie with her and exclaim innocently “It’s not me, it’s (just) a photograph”.

Unterstanding Jihadism in...
... eight steps. What makes someone drift off into a radical way of thinking? Sasha Marianna Salzmann’s play brings three different stories on this topic to the stage. There is a young man, leading a life of luxury, who slips into a crisis himself from watching media coverage about crisis areas, a Russian-German who is thrown off the tracks by his love for a fellow student, and a teenager who’s chatting with a stranger. They all have one thing in common: the search for stability and comfort. The play is at times touching, other times amusing and while it doesn’t find any answers, it offers truths.

Kalvarienbergfest & Easter Market
For 350 years, a real “Lent’s Market” was celebrated at Kalvarienberg in Hernals. Unfortunately, this nostalgic-colourful event came to an end a few years ago, but now there is the “Kalvarienbergfest” instead every year. For almost 3 weeks, the seasonably decorated square offers a range of local cultural events: concerts from Soul to Wiener Lied, exhibitions changing daily in an artist’s tent, demonstrations of craftsmanship like woodturning and Easter workshops. By the way, the first Easter Market in Wieden also offers decorative & culinary Easter-themed things, from cheese to chocolate.

Otto Wagner
He was a visionary and quite controversial at times, but at the beginning of the 20th century, he was one of the most renowned architects and world-modernisers – Otto Wagner! Vienna (and the rest of the world) owes the huge leap from historicism to the modern age to his purposeful creations and radical futuristic architecture! On the 100th anniversary of his death, Wien Museum is now showing a big exhibition highlighting his most prominent city projects, for example the church at Steinhof, the Postsparkasse, but also un-realised project, like his plans for a museum at Karlsplatz or die “unlimited” big city.

For 30 years, Monika Bachler and Charlotte Jakoubek have been creating timelessly beautiful eye-catcher fashion for urban non-conformists. A few months though, they’ve moved to a new address: a bright ceiling vault shop with cool retro furniture at Westbahnstraße. The label’s top USP: the unusual mix of materials. They use a rare silk for ties to make a dress, bright red retro-Breitcord for a skirt or some Japanese Indigo-jeans fabric for a suit. You won’t find 08/15 trends here but rather life-long collector’s items as well as concept-store guest at times.

Hao Noodle and Tea
Until recently, a rather boring Italian restaurant was residing here – they could take a leaf out of the new Hao’s book to see how it’s done: in this big, bright Asia Restaurant, the noodles are freshly made with a pasta machine for every order. That makes the Far Eastern noodle dishes – from strong soups to bowls –  really tasty! Although the serve Clay Pot with rice, not with noodles like it’s common. And since the chef is a little bit into fusion cuisine, you can even find some Magalitza bacon next to the soy vegetables in the hot clay pots. It’s all very popular – business is booming!
