Ines Doujak: Ghost populations
Ghost populations are groups of people who have left traces in the genetic material of other peoples, but whose own culture is as if erased. Ines Doujak has been conducting research in this area for a long time. Her art depicts, among other things, social injustice and nature manipulated by humans. The collages, sculptures and installations of the multi-award-winning Carinthian artist are inspired by her research, historical prints and medical publications. The exhibition also includes performances of her podcast, which deals with epidemics and pandemics.
Kunsthalle Wien, Museumsplatz 1, 1070 Vienna. Vernissage 30 September 19:00. Free entry. Web

Rotlicht Festival
A mobile phone photo is quickly snapped. Who doesn't have thousands of pictures on various clouds that are always the same anyway? But as it always is in the fast-moving world of digitalisation: its counter-movement, in this case decelerated, analogue photography, is also flourishing. The new red-light festival for analogue photography makes you pause and reflect on image composition & co. Over 60 photo artists will be exhibiting in 36 locations over 9 days. The misty walls of Elena Kristofor and Laura Sperl can be seen as well as the portraits of documentary photographer Mafalda Rakos. Today is the opening party at Club Loft!

Long Day of Refugees
Still a current topic, unfortunately: on today's long day of refugees, everyone can deal with the topic of fleeing and asylum and learn more about it at numerous free events. In the MuseumsQuartier Vienna, artist Deborah Sengl will use an escape room in order to make visitors think, and in the main library, bestselling author and poetry slammer Omar Khir Alanam reads from his stories of love, exile, revolution, fleeing and hope. And at the Packhaus, you can get to know Syrian food and Syrian women at a women's dinner party.

Pop-up Bar Kalamansi
3G can be hip too! For example, when it means Green Grounded Granny and a tasty drink in Kevin Koster's pop-up bar. The bartender is no longer a stranger in Vienna: the Sky Bar, the Kleinod and most recently the insider tip Krypt were his stops before the opening of the “Kalamansi”. The cocktail bar is dedicated to exotic citrus fruits: Bergamot, yuzu and kalamansi are mixed with high-proof spirits to create exciting, gluten-free drinks. The pop-up bar runs the pretty little café “Grüner Salon”, for the time being only every Friday and Saturday evening!

Grätzl Pop-Up
“New life from old fabrics” is Mona Bauernfeind's motto. The fashion designer shows what you can make out of old things: new garments, accessories, but also special little souvenirs. Bauernfeind makes bags and fashion from reused, sometimes very untypical materials such as old rain jackets. In the Grünraum today, she shows how you can make new unique items from your old but actually still usable things. And she presents her own collection of bags. The heart of the collection is the “changeable bag”, whose cover can be exchanged!

Fließband Top 6
Attention, gourmets! Stefan Beyer, the chef from “Das Ferment” and Lukas Stagl, the chef from Dogenhof, invite you to a small but very fine dining event. Secret highlight of the evening: a pawned running sushi band will play waiter! The two chefs have 18 different tapas-sized delicacies go round in circles: from fermented asparagus to blue shrimp with lemon gel to kombucha nog. In private dining style, you don't sit down to eat in the Dogenhof, but in the appertaining flat above it. This only makes for a handful of guests. Very classy!

Schwarze Schafe
Growing up has never been easy – climate crisis and social media dramas make it all the more difficult! Marie is in the middle of this phase of life and faces many problems: Her job is very different from what she expected, her boyfriend is chasing after someone else and her best friend is becoming more and more radical as an activist. When a state of emergency is declared in Vienna, Marie has to decide: What does she want to stand up for? Based on Ferdinand Bruckner's “Krankheit der Jugend” (illness of youth), this play asks the big questions of life. And perhaps answers them, too!

Jewish Film Festival
Shalom! Over 40 films about Judaism are currently flickering across the cinema screen as part of the Jewish Film Festival. This year's motto is “Trotzdem!” (nevertheless), which is sometimes serious, sometimes amusing. Helmut Qualtinger's Herr Karl will be shown as well as a documentary in which contemporary witnesses tell of their most beautiful day. Or the French feature film that opens today: In “Hors Normes” (“The Specials”), a Jewish and a Muslim social worker have to stick together in order to continue practising their professions. Even if the times cry out for social division. Nevertheless!

Elena Shirin & Guests
To call Elena Shirin's music “pop” would perhaps be correct but far too short-sighted! The Viennese singer-songwriter with the delicate soul voice makes a mix of electronic, jazz, neo-soul and hip-hop. Sometimes spherical and emotional, sometimes very danceable! Her list of collaborations is long: Viennese singer-songwriters Oehl are on it as well as Nathaniel Markman of the US indie darlings “Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros”. Today she performs at the analogue temple Supersense, surprise guests included. Pretty cool: A recording of her performance will be pressed on vinyl and sold.

Share with each other
What an unusual effect of Corona: at the beginning of the pandemic, the Dutch textile artist Annie Veldkamp designed a small doll made of white felt. She sent its pattern, together with needle, thread and filling material, to artists all over Europe. The result is adorable: about 1,000 hand-sewn, partly embroidered dolls from about 200 artists were sent back. An impressive testimony of artistic solidarity and encouragement in times of physical distance! As Viennese artists also participated, the installation will be shown in Vienna from today!

The market is announced as a vintage flea market for all sandmen and sandwomen. Whether the moon will really be shining already at 17:00 is questionable. But vintage friends are guaranteed to find something at the Leopoldstadt neighbourhood centre! Clothing, shoes, vintage deals and retro bargains, books, tableware, bric-a-brac and everything else imaginable will be on offer. The proceeds of the flea market will then support social projects of the Hilfswerk, such as counselling for people in difficult life situations, for instance.

Nice and slow, that’s how the Viennese escargot has conquered the whole city ;-) Just a couple of years ago, only few cooking pioneers dared preparing the local Gugumuck delicacy. Now the who is who of the Austrian gastronomy scene is on board! Until 10 October, “Viennese Escargots, Pumpkin, Rosemary, Apple” (at the Ludwig Van) or “Roman Snails with Chervil Semmel-Soufflé” (at The View) land on the plates. The City Through A Female Lens
By 2030, 2.5 billion women will live and work in cities. Until today, however, the planning and execution of cities have always been male-dominated. An exciting exhibition in the Urban Lakeside now (until 15 October) brings the female perspective to the fore: Who knows Anna Popelka? Silja Tillner? Emily Warren Roebling? No? Then it's high time! The designer of the Enzis, the architect of Urban Loritz square and the engineer of the Brooklyn Brigde are just three of the 18 exciting female urban planners from all over the world who will be presented. Open air to see around the clock!

Sternenfrauen
They discovered comets, created star charts and researched tirelessly: pioneering women like Caroline Herschel, the first to pursue the profession of astronomer. Or Sally Ride, the first American woman to fly into space at the male-dominated NASA. They all – female astronomers, space travellers, astrophysicists, space architects – dedicated themselves to unravelling the universe. The play “Sternenfrauen” (star women), embodied by actress Anita Zieher, shows these courageous women of all eras, their struggle against clichés and their successes in their professions.

Titian’s Vision of Women
With the 16th century, a new image of women was established, starting in Venice: “La Bella”. The idealised woman back then was young, well-fed and light-haired, preferably blonde. But with the sudden accumulation of portraits of women by famous painters, female emancipation also began: women entered the male-dominated art discourse and slowly went from being interchangeable objects to individual subjects. Tiziano Vecellio, called Titian, was one of the most prominent painters in Venice. The KHM is dedicating a magnificent exhibition to him and his contemporaries starting today.

If design and art were friends, they would certainly be walking arm in arm through this shop. VfmK is the abbreviation for “Verlag für moderne Kunst”, which publishes international art books. But the shop, designed by a Viennese artist, not only houses art books and magazines – some of them wonderfully offbeat – but also offers pretty home accessories, stationery and fashion created in collaboration with artists. Like the tablecloth with flower meadow by Florent Souly or earrings by Ida Mari Molander. A truly original shop!

Even though the late summer weather is deceiving right now, it's about to get cold, ladies! And wet. Inevitably. Unfortunately. Luckily there's Sophie Kernreiter. She has opened her chic little restaurant just in time. The Enso is not only completely (really completely completely) decorated in mood-lifting pink. Only ramen is served here: hot, delicious Japanese soup pots. The recipes have been reinterpreted, the fresh products all come from Austria and you can choose the ingredients yourself. This is soul food for goosebumps seasons!
