editorial

"Heya Girls!"
When you can have your shoes cleaned at Kärntner Straße while being told a love story. When you can smell the scent of the green Prater at a perfumer (is that what they're called?) on the street. When you build functioning water rockets with Science Buster Werner Gruber in the park around city hall and a pop up opera is performed on two trucks at the Stephansplatz. And when the unparalleled Susanne Bisovsky sends singers, actresses and models wearing her “Wiener Chic” fashion (photo) through the pedestrian zone. Then, dear ladies, it’s Wednesday – and the start of the festival “Wir sind Wien” (We are Vienna). For 23 days, from June 1 on, the city turns into a stage for beautiful, crazy and exciting scenes in a highly creative (and entertaining!) way - each day in a different district. And since I’ve already lived in several metropolises I can justifiably claim: No other city whirs as fancifully as Vienna. Vienna indeed lives diversity – thanks for that!

Wishing you a lively week
Your CitySpotterGirl

Wir sind Wien. Festival opening: 1010 Vienna. June 1, from 14:00. Free entrance. Web

P.S. Win yoga classes (also for beginners)!

 Ines Hofbaur
Stone workshop „gratitude“
A bank holiday activity with happiness factor! The journalist Ines Hofbaur acts out her creativity not only in her texts but she also creates very special gifts out of stones. She wraps her little treasures found in nature in delicate paper and inscribes them with special word messages. And, here you go, the whole thing is a good deal more precious! In today’s workshop under the motto “gratitude” she first gives participants an introduction to the basics of the decoupage technique and then there is enough time to design your first own stones – as a gift to yourself or to others. Pretty pretty!

borderline – Pasolini revisited
Private theatre, for everyone aged 18 and older: This sounds a bit wilder than it actually is, but you should at least have a tendency towards odd things for this Grundstein festival event. Only one viewer at a time has access to each performance in the gallery Wechselstrom in order to participate in a 10-minute installation around the topic “Pasolini” – the performance around the Italian poet and director develops individually, depending on the interaction. Pier Paolo Pasolini was murdered 40 years ago, the circumstances of his death haven’t been completely cleared up until today. Thrilling.

Summer night concert
It’s hard to believe, but probably it won’t rain at the annual concert of the Philharmonic Orchestra in Schönbrunn this year, for a change. This year’s programme is comprised entirely of the works of French composers from Ravel up to Berlioz and Boulez, conducted by the Russian Semyon Bychkov. You’ll also hear two great pianists in the unique park scenery: the sisters Katia and Marielle Labèque. They play a concert for two pianos by Francis Poulenc. And at the latest when Ravel’s Bolero sounds at the fulminant ending, everyone has goose flesh!

Flea market at University of Applied Arts
Vintage-Style at its best! Since it was so nice last year, fashionistas once again have the chance to apply new clothes at the flea market at the “Applied” university. In the creatively inspired surroundings you’ll find whatever is stylish and cool – be it design pieces of Gucci or Prada, trashy H&M items or trendy Nike stuff. After a successful second hand shopping spree in the green inner court of the hall with relaxed music, treat yourself with homemade lemonade, beer and fancy snacks. Early birds get the best pieces, but flea market experts know that anyway, right?

The Ghost And The Machine
When a band’s name includes the word “ghost”, it already sounds a bit wild and magical :-) The songs of the young band are intimate and honest, but at the same time rough and untamed. Founded in 2013 by the guitar player and singer/songwriter Andi Lechner, “The Ghost And The Machine“ by now perform as a trio. Heidi Fial joined in singing, plucking and drumming in 2014, and this year the drummer Matthias Macht followed – and they recorded their debut album together. The CD is presented tonight, to check out the refreshingly pure sound of the band, listen here.

Donaukanaltreiben
It’s hard to believe that the Danube canal was dead boring once. By now, a few lines are by far not enough to honour all the events taking place there. The pre-summer highlight: the 10th Donaukanaltreiben at all locations from Grelle Forelle to Strandbar Herrmann. With countless hip acts from Kreisky up to Clara Luzia and Nino aus Wien, DJ lines, a speed band contest, a reading by the musician Thees Uhlmann as well as a food & fashion market. And the yellow boat taxi is cruising on the water again. “Gfrei di!“ is what rapper Skero would sing. Yesss!

Pole dance trial session
Well, muscle ache is inevitable when neo pole dancers wrap themselves around the pole for the first time. Because you need quite a huge amount of body tension to bring your own body in pole position – not to mention splits and upside down ;-) Today, you have the chance to participate in a free trial lesson in the new studio of pole expert Tamara Biricz and to get to know the basics of steely pole dance. Most important message: Everything is possible with patience and training and it’s real fun!

Fish & Ships
Food trucks are soooo 2015! Now Vienna’s first temporary food ship drops anchor at the Grelle Forelle. Also on board at the Danube canal: golden baked fish and fluffy chips. The recipe of the delicious, succulent fish pieces and forbiddingly well-flavoured potato wedges comes from an Australian and a British guy who quarrelled about which nation produces better fish & chips. And then they joined forces and made the world’s best ones together. Now we can enjoy them at sunset, with relaxed DJ sounds on the waterfront – pure Brighton beach feeling!

Menstruation Symposium
When we do talk about it, it’s mostly about troubles, from PMS to tummy ache, the monthly blood is flowing secretly anyway. Why not address the issue from an artistic and taboo-removing side for a change? At the symposium today, the art theoretician Elke Krasny and the artist Petra Paul provide interesting ideas on how to make the “menses” more visible, participants are welcome to contribute as well. Another practical tip: Inform yourself on sustainable feminine hygiene alternatives at the erdbeerwoche stand at Veganmania today.

Kessler twins in Udo Jürgens musical
Ahm, well, the CitySpotterGirl didn’t even know that the Kessler twins are still alive. But the fact that they’re still performing on stage and somehow still look the same as in the year dot, is simply unbelievable! Currently, Alice and Ellen are in Vienna and until the end of June, they star in the revival of “I’ve never been to New York”. In this play, they act – how convenient! – in turns, as the mother of the protagonist. With singing, dancing, kissing, gaudy costumes and everything else that makes a musical glitter piece. When you’re 66 you’re far from the end – apparently even when you’re 79 ;-)

 Anna Schalk
Anna’s charming spring garden
Oh, what enchanted magic gardens you’ll find in our city! One of them is open today as an exception for a nice market with loads of nice people. The sculptor Anna Schalk invites us to her glasshouse studio in Hietzing and presents not only her own beautiful sand-stone sculptures but also many decorative items of the art and garden scene. The garden centre Bach delights with herbs and fragrant plants, Maria Karrer washes up driftwood poetry, Lori Rosenberg’s “Lichtblicke“ provide extravagant lamplight and Ruth Wegerer makes her delicate elves dance. Charming!

Science Fiction at the park
Lonely heroes fight in Margareten! At least at nighttime, because at Bruno-Kreisky-Park science fiction films are presented on open-air screens on ten evenings. This year’s selection of films (on occasion of the 10th anniversary) is comprised of SciFi super gems only! Such as “Blade Runner“ (yippee!) and Lars von Trier’s “Melancholia“. Admission to the summer cinema fun is free, the movie nights in Margareten are topped off with “spacy” drinks and a mobile observatory to have a look at the nocturnal starlit sky. Well then, let’s go to cinema, hammocks and park atmosphere!

Thai Fruit Festival
Rambutan, Durio or Longan? No, I’m not talking about chemical elements, but about tropical fruits! May sounds the bell for the end of summer in Thailand and this means harvest time. A perfect occasion for the Thai Embassy to organise a Fruit Festival at the Kursalon. This is not only an adventure as regards taste but – in the loudest colours nature has to offer – also a treat for the eyes. Be it mangoes, coconuts or more exotic species, sampling definitely pays off. They also sell traditional Thai sweets and artisan craftwork.

Laetitia Ribeiro
No matter whether she buoyantly invites us to eat apples (“Mangez des pommes!“) or she thinks of tomorrow in an impressive speech song ("Je me souviens de demain"), Laetitia Ribeiro’s concerts are always rich in variety and full of emotions. The lyrics of the French woman who lives in Vienna are poetical and humorous at the same time, her self-composed chansons and songs go directly towards the heart, but they are also thought-provoking. Ribeiro sings in French and German - both charming!

Da Da Da
Crazy – crazier – Dada! 100 years ago, artists in Zurich turned the absurd into art, because they perceived reality as absurd. Exactly like 100 years ago, the state of the world seems to be falling to pieces again – time for a new Dadaism? Apparently, because as of today, 17 artists present a feminist Dadaism and their female view of our crazy world. Be it Friederike Hubatschek’s paper collage “Pipalismus“ or Sarah Godthart’s work conveying the message “In japan trâgn´s papierene stiefeln“, the objects will definitely make you chuckle!

Wir Hunde / us dogs
“I was born as a human, but actually I am a dog. I grew up in no-man’s-land, I thought I was the only one like that.” Captivating, disturbing and thrilling: In the first Viennese work of the performer group Signa a society of trans species occupies the building in Faßziehergasse 5. For five hours, the audience finds itself in the middle of a “pack” of 70 players and actors, a trans-species that “wants to talk, to bark and to become visible”. A borderline experience performance in an animalistic parallel world. Not for the faint-hearted and therefore: X-rated!
